Just catching up on This Mornings interview with a flat earther-can’t get my head around his debate but at the same time he makes some points that sound very realistic and he seems knowledgable . But I do believe our earth is round and not flat but very open to other people’s views , so just wondered what you think Mumsnetters?? Sorry if there’s been a thread like this before....
YANBU=our earth is round
YABU= it is flat

@MoonlightMistletoe I believe God gave and still gives us as humans the knowledge and power to work with science , and I believe he created the atoms , gravity and power which together created the Big Bang, if that makes sense? Happy to answer any questions !

what about satellite photographs showing a nice spherical Earth???

flirtygirl · 12/02/2020 21:16

Yes there are scientists that believe in God as the creator.

However believing in a creator and creationism are two distinct beliefs.

The earth being made in 6 24 hours days as creationists believe is scientifically impossible.

The earth being made by a creator who created scientific rules, physics, atoms, genes etc is a separate belief. One that cannot be disproved.

People can choose not to believe, that is their choice but they cannot say with 100% certainty and proof that they are correct.

The person with the belief chooses to have faith in their belief.

I think they have been reading too much Terry Pratchett

I rather suspect they've been reading too much internet bollocks and not enough TP. Grin

MoonlightMistletoe · 12/02/2020 21:25

@itsemily Thankyou for sharing :) what do you make of the conspiracy?

IMO If the earth was flat I'd 100% believe there's a God. If it's a globe I find it harder to believe, I'm not sure why I feel this way.

ExEUCitizen · 12/02/2020 21:51

"you can get your camera out zoom in and then there you can see the ship again"

Actually go and try that, rather than parroting crap you've seen on the internet. It would be very easy to try. I promise you you can't. All zoom does is make the picture that you see bigger. It does not see round corners, or round the curvature of the earth. You can google for 'diagram of the curvature of earth'. Trust your own senses, thought, and intelligence, which have sufficed to keep humanity alive for millennia rather than some weird video on youtube.
When did the internet start using us rather than us using it? I'm beginning to think the whole lot should be shut down.

pelirocco123 · 12/02/2020 21:55

SciMandan on youtube has great fun with the flat earthers

MoonlightMistletoe · 12/02/2020 22:07

@ExEUCitizen I did try it I'm not parroting crap.

ExEUCitizen · 12/02/2020 22:13

And this is what the internet is for now is it?

Dayna21 · 12/02/2020 22:14

7 billion people in the world and no ones come to the edge yet. No flat earth here

Brahumbug · 12/02/2020 22:20

People can choose not to believe, that is their choice but they cannot say with 100% certainty and proof that they are correct.

You have no idea of the concept of the burden of proof. If some asserts that god is responsible for the universe or whatever then it is up to them to provide evidence, it is not up to me to disprove it. If a hypothesis can not be falsified then it is not in anyway scientific. Faith is the excuse people use for believing in things for which they have no evidence. Perhaps the universe was farted out of the arse of pixies, I have mo evidence but according to you, it must be accepted as true unless someone can prove the absence of flatulent pixies.

tywysoges · 12/02/2020 22:23

MoonlightMistletoe, the vicar in a parish not too far from me is a space scientist... Grin defo not a flat earther!

Carrotcakeforbreakfast · 12/02/2020 22:27

I was hoping this thread was just a ploy to get people to discuss Phil
Or more accurately some of the threads on Tattle atm...

MoonlightMistletoe · 12/02/2020 22:27

Thankyou. The only reason I asked is because I'm assuming people who believe in FE also believe in God. I feel like the two are linked. I can't ask any FEers because there doesn't seem to be any.

SpeechIssue · 12/02/2020 22:28

Flat earth or not why does it matter what shape something is I don’t think anyone would care either way !

The fact we are here at all is the bigger issue and raises more questions than whatever it may be that we are on

MoonlightMistletoe · 12/02/2020 22:30

@ExEUCitizen Confused

RedToothBrush · 12/02/2020 22:33

what about satellite photographs showing a nice spherical Earth???

The moon landing were faked. You can tell because the flags are blowing in the wind. Besides which no one can land on the moon, because its made of light and sometimes you can see through it. See from 4:30 in

GladAllOver · 12/02/2020 23:16

I don't think that these flatearthers really believe it themselves. They really aren't that stupid. They just think it's fun to see how many mugs they can convince, so that they can quietly laugh at them.

The chemtrailers are just the same - having a laugh at the mugs who believe it.

Shinycat · 12/02/2020 23:47

PMSL, who voted YABU? Who thinks the earth is flat? WTAF!

MelanieFrontage · 12/02/2020 23:51

Sorry, I’m a YABU voter, I just wanted to upset the ‘flat’ Apple cart!

LonginesPrime · 12/02/2020 23:54

Flat earth or not why does it matter what shape something is I don’t think anyone would care either way

That's the funniest thing about Flat Earthers - they've explained why we don't fall of the edge and it doesn't change our lives in any way so who cares? Why do they care so much?

I know they'd say it proves that you can't trust the authorities and our lives are based on lies, but I don't understand what they think should happen instead. And surely if all this effort is spent on the fraud, they'd be in danger by speaking the 'truth'? I mean it's not like the government is going to turn round and admit it if the hoax is as elaborate as Flat Earthers say, is it?

SpaghettiSharon · 12/02/2020 23:55

@RedToothBrush you’re kidding right?? Please tell me you’re kidding!

This is one of the craziest threads I’ve read - I can’t believe there is one single person intelligent enough to string a sentence together who truly believes the earth is flat or the moon landings were faked GrinGrinGrinConfusedShock.

FallenAngel01 · 13/02/2020 00:01

What is flat earth?

MelanieFrontage · 13/02/2020 00:01

One evening many many years ago (1992 I think) my not very sensible (and now sadly departed) dad decided that he would become a flat earth society member. He didn’t actually join but he demonstrated his commitment to the cause by crawling around my new house on his hands and knees doing bunny ears and claiming that the earth is flat..........

It was the first house I’d ever bought and it was at a small housewarming with my best friend (who I had bought the house with) and her parents who had never met him.........

He was joking of course and to this day the flat earth society evening is still mentioned!

FallenAngel01 · 13/02/2020 00:04

Not sure we've managed to achieve that yet?
