Just catching up on This Mornings interview with a flat earther-can’t get my head around his debate but at the same time he makes some points that sound very realistic and he seems knowledgable . But I do believe our earth is round and not flat but very open to other people’s views , so just wondered what you think Mumsnetters?? Sorry if there’s been a thread like this before....
YANBU=our earth is round
YABU= it is flat

@Moonlightmisteltoe

"Have you tried it Mordred ?"

Getting a ship back into full view after it's gone over the horizon by zooming in? It's simply not possible, you need to get higher up to see further. It's dead simple. I used to sail, years ago and I know how important it is to get higher in order to see further. The horizon curves and is real.

Have YOU tried it? Yes you can zoom in, but all you see, closer in, are the top bits of the ship that aren't hidden by the horizon. This is why sailing ships had crows' nests, to get higher and see further. It was very important in a naval battle.

"Those are interesting responses I wonder if that bloke off the telly could have answers those questions"

I have no idea. Can YOU answer them? You must have some basis for your POV.

MoonlightMistletoe · 12/02/2020 20:12

@Holdencaulfieldshomeboy Just a random question do those who believe in science also believe in god ? Sounds silly but I'm trying to work something out in my head!

I think there are a few reasons, this explains some.

Mordred · 12/02/2020 20:14

"Did someone say Satellite I had to laugh!"

You know you can watch satellites passing overhead every night, don't you?

TheSandman · 12/02/2020 20:15

Even down to earths motion, do you remember looking up as a child thinking "are we moving or is the sky" how many of you were adamant only the sky, clouds everything else up there was moving?

Yes I do. I also remember thinking Thundbirds was real, Peter Glaze was funny, and Spaghetti Hoops were exotic. I grew up and learned that all of these things were not true. (I'm still pissed off about Thunderbirds.)

On both sides there is an answer for everything.

Why limit yourself to 'both sides'? There are an infinite number of answers to any question. Trouble is when it comes to matters of scientific fact there is only one correct one.

There are no 'alternative facts'.

MoonlightMistletoe · 12/02/2020 20:21

Mordred yes I tried it, I assumed you wouldn't be able to see it at all if it's gone over the curve unless going higher up.

I'm not shouting out that I KNOW the earth is flat I'm just open minded to it all I find it interesting.

I will however go and look at what FE think if they have any answers.

MoonlightMistletoe · 12/02/2020 20:25

Sandman what If those "facts" arnt actually true facts? Just because we've been told so it doesn't mean it's true.

Mordred · 12/02/2020 20:25

"Mordred yes I tried it, I assumed you wouldn't be able to see it at all if it's gone over the curve unless going higher up."

And you were right. All you can see are the bits you can see - you cannot see the hull, for example, if the hull is over the horizon, but you CAN see the masts and topworks.

Mordred · 12/02/2020 20:29

"I will however go and look at what FE think if they have any answers."

Do that. Check especially if they can explain earthquake waves (P and S) and earthquake shadows caused by the earth's core getting in the way.

And do remember, zooming in does NOT cause a ship to re-appear:

Gothicashoker · 12/02/2020 20:32

The theory absolute rubbish, however Flat earth the band are amazing!

MoonlightMistletoe · 12/02/2020 20:34

That's actually rather good to see Mordred Thankyou!

Mordred · 12/02/2020 20:34

"Just a random question do those who believe in science also believe in god ? Sounds silly but I'm trying to work something out in my head!"

Why don't you take a look at what some Creationists say about it:

Mordred · 12/02/2020 20:35

@MoonlightMistletoe

I realise the last post is a lot of reading, but really worthwhile :-)

TheSandman · 12/02/2020 20:38

Just a random question do those who believe in science also believe in god ? Sounds silly but I'm trying to work something out in my head!

I don't think people 'believe' in science. I don't 'believe in science' any more than I believe the computer I'm sitting in front of at the moment is working. It's working. It works whether I believe in it or not - assuming I remember to turn it on. I don't believe in god/s either. But for different reasons. Science does not work like that, and religion makes no sense at all.
Putting trust in things that makes no sense is not the sort of thing I think people should do.

MoonlightMistletoe · 12/02/2020 20:45

Sandman , I didn't word that correctly.

What I'm trying to say is,
Before I heard of FE, I wasn't religious, I wasn't sure what I believed in religious / god wise however after reading and watching all of the FE content it led me to believe that there might be a God if that makes sense?

So I was trying to work out if people who know the worlds a globe are religious or not because I find FE makes more sense to me if god is real. Fecking hell im one lost confused soul Grin

TheSandman · 12/02/2020 20:46

Sandman what If those "facts" arnt actually true facts? Just because we've been told so it doesn't mean it's true.

That is what is known as a 'lie'.

What's your point?

MoonlightMistletoe · 12/02/2020 20:47

Exactly these facts could be lies I'm not saying they are but they could be because we haven't actually been to the moon for example and seen the earth from our own two eyes.

Herts6789 · 12/02/2020 20:51

Sorry it's weird that you're even using the words 'believe' and 'views'.

It's like saying what are your views on cancer or do you believe in volcanoes

Mordred · 12/02/2020 20:54

@MoonlightMistletoe

"So I was trying to work out if people who know the worlds a globe are religious or not"

Bede was. Aquinas was.

One of the symbols of Kingship in 5th century Europe was the Orb, given to the King or Queen during Coronation by the Church. A cross-quartered globe surmounted by a cross - the symbol of Christ's rulership over the (globe) earth. Early Christians knew the earth was a globe. It really is that simple.

If you ever run across a flat earther who claims that the globe earth was an invention of Copernicus, feel entitled to laugh in his/her face, because they're talking bollocks.

MoonlightMistletoe · 12/02/2020 20:55

@Herts6789 yeah my mistake but of course I believe in volcanoes we can see them with our own eyes. Just like mountains we climb them.

With the earth we can't see it the same as we see other things unless it's pictures etc.

GaaaaarlicBread · 12/02/2020 20:59

@MoonlightMistletoe just thought I’d pop back on and answer your question re: religion .
I am a Christian but also very much understand science and am very interested in it, I qualified in triple science and loved it . Hope that helps :)

So I was trying to work out if people who know the worlds a globe are religious or not because I find FE makes more sense to me if god is real. Fecking hell im one lost confused soul

I would get a good night's sleep and go read some Terry Pratchett who is the only person who wrote about a flat earth with any credibility.

I don't think you can prove the existence of god/s. If you could prove the existence of god/s you wouldn't need faith. Religion without faith? It wouldn't be religion, it would be science and god/s would be quantifiable factor/s or variable/s in... well, as s/he is supposed to be omnipotent... every scientific/mathematical formula ever devised.

There's not a lot of space in the formula for working out the area of a circle ( A= Pi r squared) to fit a god in. No need either. It works perfectly well without.

Mordred · 12/02/2020 21:03

"With the earth we can't see it the same as we see other things unless it's pictures etc"

But you can. Stand on the beach in north Wales at sunset. Watch the sun go down for you while the mountains above you are still flaming gold in the sunlight, because the sun hasn't set up there yet. See it with your own eyes.

Become familiar with the stars you see from your home town. Travel and see what happens to them. Be like Aristotle, who noted:

"Again, our observations of the stars make it evident, not only that the earth is circular, but that it is a circle of no great size. For quite a small change of position to south or north causes a manifest alteration of the horizon. There is much change, I mean, in the stars which are overhead, and the stars seen are different, as one moves northward or southward. Indeed there are some stars seen in Egypt and in the neighbourhood of Cyprus which are not seen in the northerly regions; and stars, which in the north are never beyond range of observation, in those regions rise and set."

MoonlightMistletoe · 12/02/2020 21:04

@Mordred Thankyou!

@itsemily Thankyou yes it helps, but of course there are always more questions 🙈

Does the science contradict God or is science just working out Gods creation?

TheSandman · 12/02/2020 21:05

Exactly these facts could be lies I'm not saying they are but they could be because we haven't actually been to the moon for example and seen the earth from our own two eyes.

[Bangs head on desk. Repeatedly.]

If it's a lie it's not a fact!

madcatladyforever · 12/02/2020 21:09

It makes no sense at all scientifically, a flat earth would give rise to so many problems, what if we were hit by a massive meteorite right on the edge and flipped over, or were sent spinning into space like a boomerang.
It's laughable.
And why the fuck would NASA lie about it, what would be the point, nobody can ever keep a secret anyway, it would soon get out.
I think they have been reading too much Terry Pratchett and are getting hysterical.
