This basically. The WHO don't want to stigmatise groups and this sort of thing promotes it. Why not just have a picture of a virus or a mixed group with facemasks?

It's unintentionally encouraging racism.

How was Ebola reported? SARS? MERS?

The WHO should keep its mind to the task at hand.

Kat2345 · 11/02/2020 18:57

Because almost all of the cases are from China!!

Really123456 · 11/02/2020 19:00

@Kat2345... Obviously Hmm but I think you're missing the point. Can't get over the level of pro racism on MN!

OP posts:
Cornettoninja · 11/02/2020 19:01

Well considering the main outbreak is in China it would be pretty odd if a large percentage of the footage didn’t feature Chinese people...

Stories from else where (like that Brighton GP) didn’t feature Chinese people as far as I remember.

Maybe you’ll get lucky OP and it’ll become a global pandemic then we can have proper multicultural representation.

Kat2345 · 11/02/2020 19:04

Where has there been any racism? The disease came from China and most cases have come from there. It wouldn’t make sense to show pictures of New York or Mumbai!

FromEden · 11/02/2020 19:06

It's unintentionally encouraging racism.

Most cases are in China right now and the most dramatic footage is from there. I know its shocking thay China is populated by mostly people of Chinese ethnicity, but it's not exactly racist is it. Or maybe the virus itself is a racist one Hmm

Tombliwho · 11/02/2020 19:06

Um..it started in China and the majority of cases and deaths are in China so...they show China..

Really123456 · 11/02/2020 19:07

I'm not writing about footage, it's the display behind the news readers desk, it's like a power point slide before they switch to footage.
Real footage I have no issues with.

Grin a bloody good politically correct ethnically diverse plague is surely what we need!

Leaannb · 11/02/2020 19:08

How is this racist?

Really123456 · 11/02/2020 19:09

@Tombliwho yes exactly 😉😂👍

We’ve entered a parallel universe. You don’t want the news to be reported accurately because it could offend someone? The outbreak started in China, the overwhelming majority of people who have caught it are Chinese. It is an accurate description.

The WHO have waded into an issue they have absolutely no business getting involved with.

On a serious note though, the news has to state the facts. It’s a big deal in China- so many deaths whereas here it’s not so why would they show British people or Jamaican people or Egyptians or whatnot? When the number of cases in other parts of the world equal that of china’s then they can start talking about changing the footage.

InTheSummerhouse · 11/02/2020 19:14

Pro-racism ? Really? Don't be ridiculous!

marcopront · 11/02/2020 19:15

What pictures would you like them to show?

Kat2345 · 11/02/2020 19:18

Perhaps email broadcasters with your suggestion of the right mix of people they should show!

SmileEachDay · 11/02/2020 19:22

The virus is largely within China.

Showing a more mixed group in the background would imply it is more widespread and add to some of the ridiculous panicking.

TabbyMumz · 11/02/2020 19:29

The virus is in China, absolutely fine to show Chinese people.

NeverTwerkNaked · 11/02/2020 19:31

The disease is largely in China at the moment. It's not racism to be factual.

Cornettoninja · 11/02/2020 19:32

@SmileEachDay I love your answer. It’s so sensible Star

Although I doubt they’ve put that much thought into it tbh Grin

Demigoddess90 · 11/02/2020 19:33

Should stories of gang crime show footage of much older age demographics not largely involved in gang crime?
Should weather stories like flooding in Yorkshire today involve images of the 2007 floods in Worcestershire?
Should stories about feminism include images of men in drag?
Should stories about obesity include footage of thin people?

paulinespeaksmanylanguages · 11/02/2020 19:33

It began in Barnstable but there is a conspiracy to show that it began in China.

Pure racism.

I mean if it began in China then fair enough but using China to mask the fact it began in Barnstable. Appalling,
