Broadcasters should not show Chinese people on their Coronavirus display during the news article

This basically. The WHO don't want to stigmatise groups and this sort of thing promotes it. Why not just have a picture of a virus or a mixed group with facemasks?

What's it like to be crippled by political correctness?

Don't get the OP started on the racial profiling and the broadcasting of ISIS atrocities, or the reporting of gang war crimes in Mexico.

It's not Chinese people who are targeted there I tell you

Macca84 · 11/02/2020 21:00

I agree with you OP. It promotes the ridiculous 'fear' of Chinese people, who already have to put up with a high degree of discrimination. Just this weekend in a busy city I saw people cover their mouths with their sleeve when walking past chinese people, look at a group of chinese in horror when they dated entered a restaurant and practically jump to the other side of the pavement when passing a chinese lady. Racist comments all over social media too.

VenusTiger · 11/02/2020 21:06

You're being ridiculous OP - if I flick through tv channels and I see Chinese people wearing face masks on the back drop, I immediately think of this virus which is happening now, and started in China!
If I see cows falling over on the news and I'm flicking through channels, I think BSE - they wouldn't show pigs instead would they?
There are reports with the recently named man in Brighton on the news currently - but it's not obvious, without stopping to listen, what it's about.

JellyfishandShells · 11/02/2020 23:32

This disease is killing people in China- it Is a national emergency for the Chinese people. It is highly disrespectful to suggest minimising this by using inaccurate representation of the people affected. Disgraceful, OP.

Childrenofthestones · 12/02/2020 12:22

As a family we youth hostel and walk in the lakes every year. I can't tell you how many oriental people I saw in Windermere Bowness and Ambleside wearing face masks. They were a very common sight. This was last year way before this virus was in the news and spreading.

saoirse31 · 12/02/2020 13:02

So the ultimate thrust of what you're saying OP is that no one should know where coronavirus or ebOla is occurring .... I'm sorry but you're being ridiculous

PlanDeRaccordement · 12/02/2020 13:10

Still photography is as much a record of reality as video. There is no more reason to change a photo of the actual crisis and victims as there is to switch out video footage from a Chinese city to Brighton city centre.

85notout · 12/02/2020 13:15

I pity the poor cameraman/woman who is told to go out in China and find a group of people who aren't Chinese in a general street scene.

halcyondays · 12/02/2020 13:16

It started in China, most cases so far are in China, some people have unfortunately reacted to this in a racist way, but that’s because they were already racist. Not just because they saw a picture of a Chinese person in China on a news website.

PlanDeRaccordement · 12/02/2020 13:23

Exactly! And saying that news coverage using actual footage or photos from China promotes racism infuriates me because it’s like giving racists an excuse. That they can racially abuse an Asian ancestry person on the street and then just say, Er not my fault it’s the BBCs fault for showing a photo of a Chinese person what made me racist.

Motacilla · 12/02/2020 13:23

"Picture in Scottish papers showed Chinese people near Edinburgh Castle to discuss potential of corona in Scotland. Shit like this just promotes racism"

I agree, that is entirely inappropriate given the number of people who have or who look like they have a Chinese background who have been facing exclusion and abuse in recent weeks as if they are dangerous or to blame in any way.
