Broadcasters should not show Chinese people on their Coronavirus display during the news article

This basically. The WHO don't want to stigmatise groups and this sort of thing promotes it. Why not just have a picture of a virus or a mixed group with facemasks?

OP posts:
Witchend · 11/02/2020 19:33

If they show a pro-Trump group they're normally American for some strange reason. I'd have thought that was far more insulting to a nation.

DogInATent · 11/02/2020 19:37

They have to balance accuracy with the fact that, let's face it, quite a lot of people are thick. I've had one friend of Chinese ethnicity already report that they're getting race-based comments on the street.

So far the reaction on MN has been a mixture of balanced and freaked-out, I've not seen any overtly racist comments on threads (but they're very much out there on Twitter, etc.) but whether that's a genuine absence of racism or just peer pressure on MN I'm not sure.

Most of the pictures I've seen on the news have quite pointedly not included Chinese people - empty streets.

Yamihere · 11/02/2020 19:37

I agree op. Picture in Scottish papers showed Chinese people near Edinburgh Castle to discuss potential of corona in Scotland. Shit like this just promotes racism

PlanDeRaccordement · 11/02/2020 19:53

So despite the fact that over 1000 Chinese people have lost their lives to Coronavirus we should just whitewash that and show random humans in face masks? Or dehumanise the tragedy by showing a CGI picture of the virus?

Sorry, but I think it would be racist to whitewash away the faces of the victims or dehumanise the reporting by cantering a cgi of a magnified virus.

viix · 11/02/2020 19:55

@Demigoddess90 Agreed!

TSSDNCOP · 11/02/2020 19:57

Given that it’s not uncommon for Chinese governments to obfuscate, I’d think you’d be in favour of the news highlighting the ever-growing plight of these poor people. The measures that their government seem to be taking are frightening. Do you not think that should be reported?

PlanDeRaccordement · 11/02/2020 19:58

Another comment, it is pure BS to blame racism on showing actual footage of the tragedy unfolding in China (with mostly Chinese people). No one gets turned into a racist by watching a broadcast showing Coronavirus. They’re either already a racist or not. And no matter how the coverage is done, the racists will still go out and do racist things.

Keepitup · 11/02/2020 20:06

I agree with you OP.

Letsallscreamatthesistene · 11/02/2020 20:11

I'm not writing about footage, it's the display behind the news readers desk, it's like a power point slide before they switch to footage.
Real footage I have no issues with

What?! So you want a group of multicultural people on the one hand, but Chinese people on the other hand? You either want reality, or not.

LoveNote · 11/02/2020 20:13

can MN get anymore ridiculous?? can it?

WhentheRabbitsWentWild · 11/02/2020 20:14

Oh Peak Woke ,

ItsGoingTibiaK · 11/02/2020 20:16

I agree wholeheartedly. I also wish they’d stop showing pictures of women when doing stories about pregnancy, children and teachers for stories about education, and bloody footballers when they do the sports results. It’s just irresponsible.

Fairyliz · 11/02/2020 20:21

Op are you Chinese or just being professional offended on their behalf?

JosefKeller · 11/02/2020 20:25

MN really needs a Facepalm Emoji shortcut 🤦

iklboo · 11/02/2020 20:25

Maybe use 😷 instead.

DracarysThis · 11/02/2020 20:29

I think someone needs a Biscuit!

JamesBlonde1 · 11/02/2020 20:36

Why not?

It came from China.

Should they just show Brazilians instead, who have nothing to do with it?

FromEden · 11/02/2020 20:39

Lol, if this is genuine , I hope you see you're being ridiculous now OP after reading the replies. Get a grip.

JosefKeller · 11/02/2020 20:41

Maybe monochrome is not appropriate either 🤔

Broadcasters should not show Chinese people on their Coronavirus display during the news article
Tangfastics · 11/02/2020 20:42

BAHHAHHAHHAAAA

SpokeTooSoon · 11/02/2020 20:43

Oh well, we’ll have plenty of footage of white Brits dying of this thing soon enough. We won’t need to show Chinese faces.

Even though they, as a nation, are to blame for its spread by hiding the truth for so long. The have lied to the world and to their own citizens. Blood on their hands.

paulinespeaksmanylanguages · 11/02/2020 20:44

Racism is just about the worst thing anyone can be accused of. Sometimes, I think people would rather be accused of all sorts of awful crimes, as long as it's not racism.

But not everyone thinks like this and it is shite like this that means there will eventually be a kickback agin it and real racism will flourish.

Coming out with pure balderdash will do no one any favours in the long run because it enables people to say all racism is shit and point to examples like this, which are shit. Being kicked to death because of the colour of your skin not shit but it will all be lumped in together.

It is why Hilary Clinton Or Jeremy Corbyn will never win an election. They went too far with their wokeness-daft, dangerous twats.

Cam77 · 11/02/2020 20:47

No problem with them mentioning China in relation to Coronavirus. HOWEVER, it’s unfortunate and certainly not going to help race relations against people of East Asian ethnicity, a group which is frequently fair game for prejudice and racist comments//tropes across mainstream, media in a way which is always stamped down upon much harder whenever directed against any other minority group, eg black people, Jewish people, Indian people.

Minty82 · 11/02/2020 20:50

I know what OP means. I work for a university and we’ve had Chinese students receive racist comments and verbal abuse regularly since the start of the outbreak. Making Chinese people the face of the virus in still photography behind the newsreader (which is what she’s talking about- she’s not complaining about video footage of the human impact) feeds this attitude, and it’s perfectly legitimate to question it.

SmileEachDay · 11/02/2020 20:53

perfectly legitimate to question it

Of course. Critical thinking always good.

If it was a new technology that started in China and was mainly based in China would it be racist to have pictures of largely Chinese “tech” people?

If students are being racially abused, that needs dealing with.
