This girl can advert. Tampon string

Why does this advert show a close up of a woman's bottom getting ready with a tampon string hanging out? I don't get it, is it supposed to be empowering?

Which ad? Is there a link?

GreyishDays · 09/02/2020 20:02

I quite like it. Just makes it seem normal.

Kindlethefourth · 09/02/2020 20:04

I think it's great. So many girls give up sport when periods start so anything which normalises and shows that 'this girl can' is a great move IMO

MarthasGinYard · 09/02/2020 20:04

I saw this. Wondered what on Earth it was all about.

Looneytune253 · 09/02/2020 20:05

It's at the end of this ad

I don't like it. I feel like society has no boundaries left anymore. I don't need to see a tampon string hanging out of a woman to encourage me to feel empowered.

Lailaha · 09/02/2020 20:06

There was a thread about this a couple of weeks ago. I personally think it's very contrived but if it really makes people think, "wow, you can play sports whilst you have your period" (because, after all, this is actually the 1960s) then I suppose it reaches its goal.

saraclara · 09/02/2020 20:07

I love the 'this girl can' ads. The poster type and the videos. Both before and up to this one. They're about strength, empowerment, and about it being okay to sweat. Among other things.

PeonyTruffle · 09/02/2020 20:07

Yeah I dont get it either 🤷🏽‍♀️

JesusInTheCabbageVan · 09/02/2020 20:08

I liked it. What's it advertising though?

PurpleDaisies · 09/02/2020 20:08

I don’t think I’ve ever had a tampon string hanging out of my pants. How odd.

HorseFlyOfExtraordinaryLength · 09/02/2020 20:08

I missed the tampon string!
I think it's great.
Although I have slight reservations about the campaign and I can't quite work out why.

Purplestorm83 · 09/02/2020 20:09

I like it personally.

Skyejuly · 09/02/2020 20:10

Never had a string that long lol but I don't see a problem with it.

Happygirl79 · 09/02/2020 20:12

Its just there for the 'shock value'
To make people remember the product not for empowerment of women
Well that's my take on it

PonyoFishyInTheSea · 09/02/2020 20:14

I like it. Its real.

It shows the realities of being a woman, the periods, the childbirth, the obsticals that come between a lot of women going out and pursuing sporting activities.

CodenameVillanelle · 09/02/2020 20:14

I don't see anything wrong with this at all. Those ads are great and they work.

11MrsLuther · 09/02/2020 20:14

I like it. The #thisgirlcan hashtag has been an instagram and Twitter thing for ages. It's was launched by sport England, I like the fact its encouraging women and girls to push physical boundaries and not worry about their bodies and looking perfect. I'm not explaining myself very well, but I like it!

WorraLiberty · 09/02/2020 20:14

I laughed when I spotted it.

But I might be pissed off if I was a teenager again, as I had some really heavy, crippling, painful periods and I might've thought this ad kind of trivialises that.

I can just imagine my totally unsympathetic PE teacher, pointing out the advert and telling me to 'just get on with it'.

SinglePringle · 09/02/2020 20:15

I don’t see it as ‘there for the shock value’. I see it as working towards normalising periods. I mean, blood is often still shown as blue liquid and whilst I may well be a Blue Blood, most of you aren’t Wink

Ledkr · 09/02/2020 20:15

Tampons string stuck in knicker leg is really uncomfortable and pulls on the tampon (misses point?)

saraclara · 09/02/2020 20:15

@Happygirl, there IS no product. These are ads aimed at getting women and girls exercising.

So yep, it makes sense to help remove barriers to exercise for women. An ad that demonstrates that your period doesn't need to be a barrier to exercise, is a good thing. It's not selling tampons, ffs.

Wishiwascrafty · 09/02/2020 20:17

I get why people don’t like these ads but actually I respond quite well to them. Not so much the tampon string (but if that encourages someone then great). I grew up with the view that you were sporty (school teams etc) it you weren’t. I was honestly well into my 30s before I stopped seeing exercise as a thing I have to do as punishment for eating or being fat. These ads remind me that going for a swim a couple of times a week can be as much about getting away from mum/wife/job as wrecking myself to try and lose weight.

saraclara · 09/02/2020 20:18

Seriously, I love that these ads are so positive. So seeing posters here jumping straight to negativity, seems extra annoying!

DontFundHate · 09/02/2020 20:18

I really like these adverts. Great to see breastfeeding too
