Or Kytt? Or Kitt

What are your thoughts?

I know its usually an abbreviation but I hate the longer names

Is everyone thinking Kit is for a boy? It's my auntie's name, short for Catherine. I like it either way.

ChewChewIsMySpiritAnimal · 06/02/2020 19:16

Kit is a terrible name.

SimonJT · 06/02/2020 19:19

I’ve never been compared to a kitkat etc, if we avoided every name that is linked to something ‘funny’ we would be left with few names to choose from.

Mlou32 · 06/02/2020 19:23

Nice name but all I can picture is Kit de Luca from Pretty Woman Grin

IndecentFeminist · 06/02/2020 19:23

I know kit as a boy's name and kitty as short for Catherine

FleetwoodMacMummy · 06/02/2020 19:25

Kit - other spellings are horrible

77seven · 06/02/2020 19:27

NearLifeExperience - yes, I did know Cosmo was a name but we have a cat called CosmicCosmo and we used to have a Norwich Terrier called Kit.

SidneyPrescott · 06/02/2020 19:27

Kytt is an abomination

Mimilamore · 06/02/2020 19:52

Love it👍🏻

CallmeAngelina · 06/02/2020 21:15

My dear dad who died very recently was Kit, short for Christopher. Sad
He was 88, so it's nice to see it come round again.

Fedupofitnow123 · 07/02/2020 05:27

Thank you everyone, see, my father who has bowel cancer that has spread has picked the name, friend even had the balls to tell me to get him to choose something else. I love Kit and she just put the wind up my sails and with hormones and everything.

Not sure how it's so middle class and therefore shouldn't be used though!

funmummy48 · 07/02/2020 05:31

I love the name Kit. I don’t think it matters whether you use it as the shortened form of Christopher or as a stand alone name. Either way is fine.

bellinisurge · 07/02/2020 05:35

I once met a female Kit.

HoppingPavlova · 07/02/2020 05:52

I’m sure it’s fine but I would constantly be thinking of the car. Then that would lead into thoughts of eating burgers off toilet floors, then I’d shudder. I’m sure there are always unfortunate associations with every name though.

MyOtherProfile · 07/02/2020 06:03

It's nothing like Kip, Chip etc. It's a bona fide diminutive
So are Biff, Chip and Kipper.

my father who has bowel cancer that has spread has picked the name, friend even had the balls to tell me to get him to choose something else.
Lovely name and lovely reason to use it. However the moral of this story is don't tell friends (or family) what name you are thinking of using. Someone will always strongly object. Make a choice and own it.

dontgobaconmyheart · 07/02/2020 06:05

Its subjective OP so really what does it matter. Personally I don't mind it but I know (or used to) someone called it and he was just an arsehole, otherwise it reminds me of Kit harington, who also seems like a huge pathetic sleaze (don't get it at all) so on that basis I couldn't do it even though the name itself is fine.

Just do whatever you want, your friend's entitled to her opinion, hardly worth falling out over. I'm sure she hasn't agreed with everything you've ever said to her.

MakeItRain · 07/02/2020 06:33

I don't like the name/abbreviation Kit. But it's your baby and your decision. You have to have a name you're sure of. Some people might not like it and if that's going to upset you, that might be a reason in itself to rethink the name, even if you do want it for sentimental reasons.

DejaVoodoo · 07/02/2020 07:48

Some people might not like it and if that's going to upset you, that might be a reason in itself to rethink the name...

Each, any and every name is going to have people that don’t like it, though; there’s no universally liked name. A straw pole like this is a good idea to gauge how liked it is, though, and the majority of posters here seem to like the name Kit.

Growingboys · 07/02/2020 08:16

If your father picked the name I would go for it. Just spell it Kit.

Proseccoagain · 07/02/2020 08:36

My younger sister Christine was always known as Kit, because as I was only 3, couldn't pronounce her name and called her Kitine which got shortened to Kit.

Crapediem · 07/02/2020 08:54

I think Kit as a nickname (for e.g. Christopher) is cute if it won't be on their birth certificate, so they can choose whether to use it later on, but it might be worth avoiding noun names with unintended alternative meanings as their legal name for their birth certificate (e.g. Mark, Paige, Amelia- which is also a medical condition, etc.)

Hepsibar · 07/02/2020 09:42

Are you being influenced by the name of the prince in the latest Cinderella?

It's not a name I have thought of but it's lovely, but like many others on this thread, much prefer the simplest spelling version: Kit

One draw back is playground banter as it rhymes with so much: nit, twit and so on ...

Disfordarkchocolate · 07/02/2020 09:58

I always think of it as a strong name. Influenced, I think, by the hero in a book who was called Kit (short for Christmas).

NearlyGranny · 07/02/2020 10:04

The only reason not to choose Kit would be if your surname starts with letter T or if it's a single syllable surname. Try it over out loud before deciding. I like the idea of using Christopher so he can be formal and boring if he wants to be when he's Prime Minister later.

stophuggingme · 07/02/2020 14:19

I’m not middle class
I’m sorry about your father Flowers

Your friend should shut her trap
