To have only just noticed this about Cadbury chocolate??

I have seen a lot on Mumsnet previously about Cadbury chocolate changing and not being nice, but I still thought it was nice up until literally now!

Last week I bought a creme egg, which was seriously horrible, but put it down to a bad batch maybe? Just opened a bag of mini eggs and they are foul! They even smell strange.

So have they changed the recipe yet again?

I thought id order a bar of the tonys chocolonely to give it a go. My head was turned by the pack of easter eggs too. Ok, £4 something each ... Steep but ill treat myself. £4.50 postage!!! No thanks Tony. Im not paying £15 for some chocolate.

Berrymuch · 06/02/2020 08:19

Sainsbury's sell Tony choc, it's quite often on offer (but still expensive!), they don't do the full range though.

SerenDippitty · 06/02/2020 08:22

Co op 85% dark chocolate is the best.

TheHagOnTheHill · 06/02/2020 08:22

Some green and blacks and lindt have palm oil in,you have to check the labels.
I don't think something that no longer melts should be called chocolate, this is the reason that the recipes are different on its biscuits.Still rubbish.
I will miss the morning no eggs but M&S ones I am told are nice.
We have always preferred galaxy but that is slimey too.
Toblerone still tasted nice at Christmas and it has its proper shape back.

VegIn1Bed · 06/02/2020 08:27

We love Tony’s too. Anybody know when we’re going to get the other flavours? Sainsbury only sells 4 and there are loads.

WooMaWang · 06/02/2020 08:32

@FreakStar it always breaks along the lines when we have it.

Everyone here actually likes the silly pattern. The totally massive bit is seriously coveted. 😆

PineappleDanish · 06/02/2020 08:37

I'm not a green and blacks fan but I do know my Lindt.... the plain bars and the bunnies/reindeer are palm-oil free. They do add palm oil to some of the fillings of things like their Lindor truffles. Stick to the bars and you're fine.

SerendipityJane · 06/02/2020 09:03

Not really. The singular swerve on their FAQs I linked to upthread tells you all you need to know from the comfort of your own chair. No need to bother shops looking at labels.

I had a dabble with G&Bs a couple of years ago. But, as I said before, it's simply easier not to eat chocolate anyway. Another thing we've stolen from our grandchildren.

Calledyoulastnightfromglasgow · 06/02/2020 09:09

If Lindt and G&B are using palm
oil then that massively bothers me.

www.lindt.co.uk/world-of-lindt/sustainability/sustainable-palm-oil/

Some fillings of LINDT chocolates contain various vegetable fats, including palm oil. In the production process, Lindt & Sprüngli opts for palm oil from sustainable production in order to minimize harmful effects of palm oil production on the environment and humans.

As I said previously, G&Bs is owned by Mondelēz so it's a given they are cramming palm oil in as much as possible.

Crapediem · 06/02/2020 09:36

Green & Blacks = Cadbury's = Mondelez = Kraft = Philip Morris (US tobacco company) - there're all part of the same massive group

So they have plenty of experience from selling tobacco to draw upon.....
including their ethics and values (or lack thereof)

Lindt are NOT owned by the Mondelez/ Kraft / Philip Morris group and none of their chocolate has any palm oil in it- only cocoa butter

Lindt's fillings (like the Lindor ones) DO contain palm oil, but it is 'sustainable' (though I think just avoiding all palm oil would be easier).

Yeahwhatevs · 06/02/2020 09:37

I wish people would stop eating Cadbury's and buy decent chocolate, like Lindt, instead. But I guess they do still keep buying it, hence they keep manufacturing it. It's a shame but these companies treat us like mugs.

Crapediem · 06/02/2020 09:37

GladAllOver · 06/02/2020 09:56

People will keep buying Cadbury because it's ubiquitous - every corner shop and station bookstall has it on display. You have to go out of your way to buy the real thing and that's a real shame because proper chocolate is so much nicer.
And the varieties with more cocoa and less sugar are even healthier too. What's not to like?

TatianaLarina · 06/02/2020 11:09

G&B was bought by Cadbury’s which was bought by Kraft which is now Mondelez which also owns Toblerone and Côte d’Or.

I don’t like Lindt milk chocolate personally or G&B much. But G&B doesn’t contain palm oil.

In London at least most newsagents/corner shops have Lindt, G&B and Ritter.

SerendipityJane · 06/02/2020 11:16

Are you sure ?

damnthatanxiety · 06/02/2020 11:40

I thought all chocolate under about 50% cocoa was milk chocolate. If it isn't dairy milk, what is it?

damnthatanxiety · 06/02/2020 11:46

Yeahwhatevs Lindt is not a great chocolate. It is the Swiss version of Cadbury's. Very soapy. If you want proper decent chocolate, you have to pay for it.

SerendipityJane · 06/02/2020 11:53

wasn't there a massive bunfight a few years ago between Belgium, Switzerland and the UK over what counted as "chocolate" ? I seem to recall whatever Cadburys were churning out as "chocolate" was disputed ? In the end it got called "family chocolate" ?

One of the dangers of getting old - that was 20 years ago !!!! Still an interesting read as to what used to go into last generations chocolate.

That's very true. I often think the same thing with energy or broadband suppliers. You could be the absolute best company ever for people to use - lowest prices, best product, best customer service, most reliable etc - but the vast majority of people will still instinctively go with one of the very few big companies who advertise incessantly, all claiming to be the best, but actually invariably delivering the worst service overall.

They rely on most people not really knowing that alternatives exist or, if they do, how to go about finding them - and thinking that they're probably aimed at hipsters with more money than sense anyway.

Taking broadband for example, if you look at ISP Review, they have a list of the top-10 rated providers. With the possible exception of Zen, at number 7, not one of them is well-known, much less a household name. They used to do a top 50 (maybe they still do - they've changed the site around!) and none of the big well-known ones featured in the top 30 for customer satisfaction.

Why this attitude translates to chocolate, I've no idea - there's no contract, no signing up, no switching - just a small amount of money for a one-off purchase - but I think all the years of advertising have ingrained themselves in the common psyche, as well as the fact that you get a lot more for your money than you do of the decent stuff.

Politicians too.

BrendasUmbrella · 06/02/2020 12:26

I bought the Tony's milk chocolate bar last night. I like it. It doesn't taste like (the dearly departed) Dairy Milk to me, but it's smooth and has nice mouth-feel and no weird acidic aftertaste, which puts it head and shoulders above all of the household name brands!

TatianaLarina · 06/02/2020 12:50

Are you sure ?

Yep. They use cocoa butter. You can google for the ingredients.

PineappleDanish · 06/02/2020 13:29

People will keep buying Cadbury because it's ubiquitous

And cheap.

In Sainsburys - 200g Dairy Milk is £2.
Green and Black's milk chocolate is 100g for £1.50. Lindt is 100g for £2 - twice as much as the Dairy Milk. The Tony's Chocoloney bar is 180g for £3.50. Even more expensive.

People are not prepared to pay for quality. That's their lookout, if they want to eat cheap crap.
