To have only just noticed this about Cadbury chocolate??

I have seen a lot on Mumsnet previously about Cadbury chocolate changing and not being nice, but I still thought it was nice up until literally now!

Last week I bought a creme egg, which was seriously horrible, but put it down to a bad batch maybe? Just opened a bag of mini eggs and they are foul! They even smell strange.

So have they changed the recipe yet again?

Montezuma's chocolate is good too

Yes I think people’s taste has moved on to dark chocolate, artisan chocolate like Montezumas, Willie’s etc.

Even Asda they do their own version of artisanal choc.

Pulpfiction1 · 05/02/2020 21:39

I used to love Cadbury but don't bother with it at all now. The only stuff I buy is the aldi own brand stuff.

floffel · 05/02/2020 21:41

It’s VILE - never mind the palm oil is destroying the orangutans environment

Can someone please reassure me that Ferrero Rocher original has not been tampered with?

united4ever · 05/02/2020 21:49

Ritter Sport are £1.50 in wilko....good chocolate and no palm oil i believe

CooCooCoo · 05/02/2020 21:53

Flakes and chocolate fingers have palm oil.

And the mini chocolate fingers recipe is different hence why it tastes even more boggin

Hadleybeans · 05/02/2020 21:54

Might be where it's manufactured? When I was an expat, I noticed that when I bought Dairy Milk chocolate that had been manufactured in the Middle East it was crap (waxy, not chocolatey or creamy, horrible texture). I started hunting down the rare places that stocked Irish made Dairy Milk and that was still delicious....

fastliving · 05/02/2020 21:55

The sad thing is that kids growing up with Cadbury's now will have no idea that chocolate doesn't taste like that.

Tony's Chocolate is very very good, I think it's fair trade too. You can buy it in Waitrose and I've seen it a few other places too. Highly recommend (I'm nothing to do with the company, just a happy consumer).

TheHumansAreDefinitelyDead · 05/02/2020 21:58

Ferrero run 116 palm oil mills!

nicky7654 · 05/02/2020 21:59

Cadburys use Palm Oil so if you eat their chocolate you are helping to destroy Orangutans and bring them to extinction! Is it worth it??

Killerqueen2244 · 05/02/2020 22:07

Aha @Hairwizard finally someone else who has experienced the wonder that is Willies!!! Wink it is worth the extra cost I think!

GladAllOver · 05/02/2020 22:10

Cadbury have been experimenting with different fats for years, to replace the expensive but proper tasting cocoa butter.
If you look at the small print on the wrappers you will see they include palm oil, shea, and other oils. It's those that give it the poor taste and the oily aftertaste.
As others have said, Aldi's Moser Roth brand doesn't have that shit and they have a range of different cocoa proportions.

Balkinfly · 05/02/2020 22:16

Probably already mentioned earlier but Twirl, flake, Freddie Fog, Animal bars and a couple of others are the original recipe as still made in the Ireland factory.

Balkinfly · 05/02/2020 22:17

Possibly Wispa

Tellmetruth4 · 05/02/2020 22:18

Tony Chocalonely is what you need to remove the nasty Cadbury’s taste. Real, well made chocolate tastes great. It’s such a shame Cadbury’s have gone so downhill but it was to be expected when they were bought by Kraft. Nobody has ever raved about American chocolate or cheese unless they like chemically tasting stuff.

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 05/02/2020 22:19

I don't know Arti and I'm sure s/he is a lovely person, but nonetheless, not for me, thanks Grin

mummyof2boys30 · 05/02/2020 22:22

Irish Cadbury mint crisp and golden crisp still old recipe and it's gorgeous. The rest is horrible now, esp the mini eggs

FreakStar · 05/02/2020 22:25

You all grew up with Cadbury's chocolate with palm oil in- you just didn't know it at the time- the 'huge' difference is all in your heads! The change in shape is the biggest difference as it changes the experience.

buttermilkwaffles · 05/02/2020 22:39

Ferrero Rocher is filled with Nutella which contains palm oil.

Ingredients
Milk Chocolate 30% [Sugar, Cocoa Butter, Cocoa Mass, Skimmed Milk Powder, Concentrated Butter, Emulsifier: Lecithins (Soya), Vanillin), Hazelnuts (28.5%), Sugar, Palm Oil, Wheat Flour, Whey Powder (Milk), Fat-Reduced Cocoa, Emulsifier: Lecithins (Soya), Raising Agent (Sodium Bicarbonate), Salt, Vanillin.

buttermilkwaffles · 05/02/2020 22:46

Ritter do a high cocoa content milk chocolate bar which only contains 4
ingredients: cocoa mass, sugar, cocoa butter, whole milk powder.

www.ritter-sport.de/en/products/detail/Cocoa-Selection-Ghana/

Found them in Lidl and other supermarkets in Poland, they cost equivalent of around £1, while the standard Ritter bars were around the equivalent of 80p.

Don't know why you can't get them in the UK though...

SerendipityJane · 06/02/2020 06:51

Did not.

I didn't attribute it to Palm oil. I didn't even know about the controversy and I actually wondered if my taste buds (or my batch of mini eggs) had gone off somehow. Then I did some research and learned about the sale to Kraft Sad

SW16 · 06/02/2020 07:48

I don’t touch Cadbury now, haven’t for a long time.

So many bars full of cheap added sugary bits and stuff to try and reduce the amount of actual chocolate and disguise the taste.

SW16 · 06/02/2020 07:51

Well that depends on when you think we grew up. It has been revolting for a long time before they changed the shape Confused

And they did change the recipe. Why would you think that would not result in a change of product?

FreakStar · 06/02/2020 07:53

When did they change the recipe? - apparently it's had palm oil in since the 1950s.

PineappleDanish · 06/02/2020 08:02

It's true that Cadbury - and other brands like Galaxy - have always used vegetable oils in their chocolate. But they have moved from shea oil into palm oil recently because it's cheaper.

Palm oil means the bar doesn't "snap" like it used to. It gives the chocolate a weird mouth feel - it feels a bit waxy and chewy rather than melty and smooth. It is really not difficult to tell the difference between a bar of bendy, waxy Cadbury and a brand like Lindt or the Aldi one without any palm oil.

Cadbury was sold to Kraft in 2012, that's when it all started to go downhill. Focus on cheap rather than quality. When supermarkets are selling those 4 bar packs for a quid is it any surprise that it's crap?
