To still believe I can actually fly?

Ok this is going to sound weird.

I have these memories and I’m convinced they are not dreams - I know maybe they are or it’s just utter madness but what does it mean?

I feel like I have real memories of being a child and physically flying - I would make this feeling in my tummy (this is in my memory) this memory would life me and I would fly down the stairs- I would also fly in our old lounge by once again creating this feeling.

Now I KNOW (or do I know) that of course I didn’t fly - but I genuinely feel like these memories of flying are so real.

Does anyone know what it means? I literally feel like I’ve flown.

*sorry the feeling would lift me - really deep in the pit of my stomach and I would fly

I have similar memories but have assumed it’s just dreams

NC4Now · 04/02/2020 23:03

I can fly in my dreams. I often do. It’s very convenient. Pretty sure I’ve never done it awake though.

Alderaan · 04/02/2020 23:04

I too have vivid memories of flying down the stairs as a young child. It troubled me for years before I came to the conclusion that it must've been a dream. It does make me wonder which of my other memories are dreams though .

Marbu · 04/02/2020 23:06

I often dream that I can fly.
I also dream of swimming quite a lot - I can swim really fast through the water without coming up for air and get from place to place really easily.

Everythingmagnolia · 04/02/2020 23:06

I have a memory of jumping all the way from the top of the stairs to the bottom.

Think it was a dream though!

LilyPinkNoah · 04/02/2020 23:07

I think you’re right it must have been a very lucid dream - of course it is - it just to this day feels so so very real - I could control it. That’s why it doesn’t feel like a dream - I remember making decisions - making the flying happen. I just wonder what it was - what it means

OP posts:
LilyPinkNoah · 04/02/2020 23:08

Now yes I too thought as a child I could jump from the top to the bottom @Everythingmagnolia how bizarre!

I think the flying down the stairs one is a mixed up memory from being tiny and carried up and down stairs. It’s really common.

I often dream that I know how to fly and I’m always amazed other people can’t, it’s just like taking a bigger step than usual and then you’re airborne. I then have that weird half awake feeling that OF COURSE that’s how you do it before I wake up properly.

ColdCottage · 04/02/2020 23:08

I have "memories" of flying as a child, I can even recall the movement of my arms and the pressure and feeling of taking off. I flew down the road by our house.

I still have very vivid dreams of doing it now. Feels so real

Ohyesiam · 04/02/2020 23:09

I have a memory of flying from a first floor window down into the front garden on a hot summer day when I was 2 or 3. I remember immediately after doing it thinking “ did I just do that? How did I just fly” .
That was over 50 years ago and I still think about it.

LilyPinkNoah · 04/02/2020 23:09

I’m so shocked that this is so common! Maybe we have all flown

TurnOffTheTv · 04/02/2020 23:10

Oh goodness I thought I was the only one that this had happened to! I used to go to my Grans house and open her music box at the top of the stairs and I’d just float down to the bottom. It was SO real, I’m still not entirely convinced it’s not and I’m in my 40’s now. It’s so vivid, even the weird feeling in my stomach.

ColdCottage · 04/02/2020 23:10

Part of me still feels like I could push off and fly.

Maybe I was able to fly as a bird or insect in a previous life???

LilyPinkNoah · 04/02/2020 23:10

@Ohyesiam totally get that - it’s so vivid and I try to recreate that ‘ability’

OP posts:
Ishihtzuknot · 04/02/2020 23:10

I had this as a child I always assumed it was a dream but I’d see or do things that weren’t possible for the timescale and remember them as physical memories, perhaps we all popped into another dimension or skipped to the future Grin

LilyPinkNoah · 04/02/2020 23:11

@ColdCottage for me it’s trying to work our how to make that feeling in my tummy which I know lifts me and I can fly!

OP posts:
LilyPinkNoah · 04/02/2020 23:12

@Ishihtzuknot absolutely - incredibly real. A phenomenon perhaps? I’m so shocked that it’s so real for so many of you.

Lipz · 04/02/2020 23:14

Give it a try Smile just stand at the top of your stairs, flap your arms and jump. Don't forget to come back and let us know how you got on Smile

LilyPinkNoah · 04/02/2020 23:15

@TurnOffTheTv it’s exactly that feeling!! Also it feels so real that you think you can’t tell anyone you’ve flown! As how can it be tea? But even now I think it was real! That I could fly!!

OP posts:
LilyPinkNoah · 04/02/2020 23:16

That’s not how it’s done @Lipz you’ve obviously never experienced it

OP posts:
tothesea · 04/02/2020 23:16

I had this too!! Vivid dreams of flying down the stairs as a child. I can still recall the swooping feeling.
I do still occasionally dream it. I have to bounce hard from foot to foot and then...lift off!!!

Ceefax101 · 04/02/2020 23:17

The flying down the stairs dream is an actual thing. Good article here www.dazeddigital.com/artsandculture/article/34336/1/why-we-dreamed-about-floating-down-stairs-when-we-were-kids

B0bbin · 04/02/2020 23:17

I could as a child, and still can fly in dreams! In my dreams it's so real. I flap my arms a bit like wingsBlush and just go vertically up rather than the stairs thing ithers have described. I always think, 'how could I have forgotten to do this ALL THE TIME?' It's such an ace feeling. Hope I have another flying dream soon x

Usingmyindoorvoice · 04/02/2020 23:18

My adult daughter tells me she has vivid memories of being able fly too as a toddler. She describes in detail the house we lived in until she was two and a half. No photos on display of our first house, some in the living room maybe, certainly no photos at all of the tiny staircase that she flew up and down!
