To still believe I can actually fly?

Ok this is going to sound weird.

I have these memories and I’m convinced they are not dreams - I know maybe they are or it’s just utter madness but what does it mean?

I feel like I have real memories of being a child and physically flying - I would make this feeling in my tummy (this is in my memory) this memory would life me and I would fly down the stairs- I would also fly in our old lounge by once again creating this feeling.

Now I KNOW (or do I know) that of course I didn’t fly - but I genuinely feel like these memories of flying are so real.

Does anyone know what it means? I literally feel like I’ve flown.

I think i always knew it was a dream. Well i never tried it and fell so....

I could never walk in my dreams as a child even if i really tried. I always flew

Jurassiclover · 05/02/2020 21:50

Op this has made me feel so weird as I used to have a reoccurring dream about flying specifically down the stairs!!!

LilyPinkNoah · 05/02/2020 22:09

It came into my thoughts as I went to bed last night and thought I would love to have that dream again! Sadly not

Wow !!!!!!!! My ‘memory’ of floating / flying down the stairs with a swimmy feeling in my tummy wearing a pink nylon nightie (70’s child - 😂) so vivid !! Can’t believe it’s so common 😱

MyCatHatesEverybody · 05/02/2020 22:18

I'm like onionface - I've never had the flying up or down stairs dream and I too grew up in a bungalow. I do have sort of flying dreams as an adult - I kind of bounce my way around through the sky.

DollyDoneMore · 05/02/2020 22:20

I sometimes still dream I can fly. I’ve heard other people say that this can be a precursor to lucid dreaming but I never remember that in my dream! All very interesting and curious and crazy and fascinating to know what your subconscious brain is capable of.

But...

It doesn’t mean you were once a bird! Or reincarnated! Or telepathic! Jesus, people, you had a dream !

dudsville · 05/02/2020 22:21

I know I was able to breath under water as a child! Glad to have somewhere to stare this gem of a fact!

LilyPinkNoah · 05/02/2020 22:36

I just told DH and he said oh how lovely you could fly - I can’t 😆

I remember flying as a child too, still occasionally have this dream. I also fly kind of like swimming very slow breast stroke legs to propel myself

Iooselipssinkships · 06/02/2020 11:00

After posing last night I asked my 11 and 7 year olds if they've had any similar dreams and they haven't.
I'm now wondering if it's a generational thing or the government were having us injected with some weird drug when we were born.

Iooselipssinkships · 06/02/2020 11:03

Does anyone have trouble hitting someone in their dreams? I promise I'm not a psychopath but I've dreamt of trying to defend myself but when I lash out it has no impact.
That and I can't text or ring anyone either, the number just keeps messing up and I can't properly imput anything.
AND even though I can drive whenever I dream about being in a car it's out of control and smashing into everything.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 06/02/2020 11:26

I can't properly ring emergency services and when I do get through to someone it's usually someone sinister or just the caretaker or someone.

I also have problems walking in dreams. I finally worked out in one dream that if I did sideways steps I could traverse to where I needed to go and now that's how I get around in my dreams Confused

I think that's linked to my sleeping position though.

Last night I dreamt that I was in some sort of kangaroo court that accidentally repealed common law...

BecauseReasons · 06/02/2020 11:40

I've had the 'jumping down the stairs" dream. My most vivid dream in childhood was crossing a bridge over a river in the Amazon jungle in a jeep of some sort with crocodiles underneath. Seemed very much like a memory. Presume I must have watched too much Tarzan or something.

I do also have a recurring dream of trying to hide from a group of men in uniforms. Military rather than police-like and I can never understand what they're saying. It's always on the estate near my house but there's no one else around and I think they catch me but I wake up before it happens. Haven't had it for a while, actually.

YippeeKayakOtherBuckets · 06/02/2020 12:09

I often have the one where I can’t use my phone, either to ring 999 or someone important or to look something vital up online, in fact I dreamed last night that my iPad screen wouldn’t go back to the right page I needed.

A symptom of modern life, I reckon.

Iooselipssinkships · 06/02/2020 12:11

I have yet another... and I still promise I'm not a psychopath but ever dreamt about how you know you've killed someone or committed a serious crime and the police are on to you? You're almost just waiting to be caught knowing life will never be the same again. That panic you have is truly awful. I wake up so damn relieved.

Stressheadme123 · 06/02/2020 13:23

@YippeeKayakOtherBuckets me too! I often dream I am trying to call 999 for whatever reason and I can’t get my phone to accept my password, and multiple attempts to hit 999 always ends with me hitting the wrong numbers and being SO FRUSTRATED that my fingers just aren’t doing what I want them to!

Vectura · 06/02/2020 14:01

I used to have this OP. I never really acknowledged it in the front of my head, but I sort of believed I flew when I was a kid.

In my 20’s I was working in a bookshop and I found a kids book called something like they girl who could fly’. As I read the first page it suddenly hit me, logically, that I had never been able to fly, and I swear I felt a small part of me die out. It was very saddening.

I also fly a lot in my dreams so I imagine it came from that! Very sad day.

LilyPinkNoah · 06/02/2020 14:17

@Vectura I still believe though - almost like I’m absolutely sure I did fly

Ravenfeet · 06/02/2020 14:19

Haha how bizarre. I remember passionately arguing with a friend at primary school that I really had once flown down the stairs. I was convinced I had. She wasn't buying it Grin

I no longer believe that I did but it really was like a memory. I've had lots of flying dreams that I knew were dreams - this was different. How interesting that it's so common.

iklboo · 06/02/2020 14:42

I run on all fours in my dreams - like a big cat or wolf. I'd need serious medical attention if I tried it in real life.

I've felt myself die in dreams too - fading away and ceasing existing. I'm such a lucid dreamer I think that's me realising I'm going into deep sleep from REM.

MoonlightMistletoe · 06/02/2020 14:44

I can fly too OP!

I think it's either lucid dreaming or Out of body experience. I also have sleep paralysis and sometimes with that I go into flight mode too! So strange.

sickandtiredofsick · 06/02/2020 14:44

I had this also with stairs and I remember being v conscious my parents and aunty and cousins were in the kitchen so I had to make sure they didn’t see me then I ran down to see them all

Standandwait · 06/02/2020 14:45

Gosh, am I the only person in the world who has never, ever dreamed she could fly? I've heard it's a common dream, I'd love to try it! Like Kitten, I can't even walk in my dreams. My legs refuse to move however urgently they need to. It can become very scary...

bbpp · 06/02/2020 14:45

Exactly the same here! I also 'remember' secretly showing my friends once too lol

SecretWitch · 06/02/2020 14:50

I dream I can fly but mostly in times of danger. When I dream of feeling threatened or attacked I find myself able to go straight up, into the rafters or into trees. From my great height I can observe all the trouble below from my safe perch.
