I am not sure if there is reason to worry about the new Coronavirus. I am not a medical expert but to be honest feel a bit scared because we know so little and some experts seem worried. How do you think?

brainfogg totally sympathise and get it, fellow anxiety sufferer here. I don't think these threads will help you. Better to stay away.

DobbyTheHouseElk · 10/02/2020 14:42

I agree. Take a break from the news and these threads. They don’t help anxiety. In fact they feed it.

Lweji · 10/02/2020 14:42

Not sure if this helps, but at this particular time, you are indeed more likely to catch the flu and probably die from it than coronavirus in the UK.
Probably of gut bug as well.
Or any other sort of pneumonia.

If you are going to stress about catching the new coronavirus, at least wait until it reaches a decent prevalence in the UK.

You are allowed to stress about whether it will become pandemic or not, though.

brainfogg · 10/02/2020 14:42

Notanother... thank you Flowers sorry you suffer also, it’s horrible isn’t it! I’ll try to avoid online stuff for a while, however when I’m not informed I end up filling in the blanks and catastrophising so it might be worse!

iMatter · 10/02/2020 14:43

A private school in Southampton has been closed after some pupils who had been to the affected region had shown signs of coronavirus. They are currently in Southampton hospital.

SirVixofVixHall · 10/02/2020 14:45

But if people with stronger immune systems were more likely to overreact to the virus , and die, surely most of the dead would be children and young adults ? Whereas I thought the opposite was true ?

I have an auto-immune disease, as does one of my dc, so our immune systems are overreactive anyway, are we more likely to die ?

brainfogg · 10/02/2020 14:46

I love your last post @Lweji Grin I’m liking the idea of having ‘categories’ for worries! I’ve actually watched a video recently where a psychologist suggested having a specific time of the day to do all of your worrying. I’ve tried but my brain didn’t like that 🤣

You’re right, the risks of other illnesses are far worse right now. I’m kicking myself that I didn’t get the flu jab a few weeks ago as I nearly did and now am trying to avoid all medical places. I’m thinking if a person got flu AND corona that would be bad...?

woodchuck99 · 10/02/2020 14:48

Go to Sainsbury's or someone like that in the evening for the jab. It's quiet then.

Unless you live in Brighton, pop along to a Lloyds or Boots today.

Wherever you go at the moment, there will be people with colds, but they're colds. I have my second cold in a month now, and I can guarantee it's a cold because I know the toddler I caught it off. Her parents won't have been skiing anywhere. Grin

Lweji · 10/02/2020 14:58

if a person got flu AND corona that would be bad

That is an excellent question.
A quick search and read says that the effect of viral co-infection is not clear. We may find out in a few months.

brainfogg · 10/02/2020 14:58

Thanks @woodchuck99 and @PotholeParadise that’s a really good idea, will go to sainsburys tonight.

Although I’ve just read a youtube comment that says it’s pointless getting a flu jab during flu season, it has to be before. Apparently because your body doesn’t have time to build up the antibodies and it can cause it to mutate if you do happen to come into contact with it - any truth to that do you know?!

ofwarren · 10/02/2020 14:59

That's not true brainfogg my son's consultant says that it takes 2 weeks to be effective. He has to have it due to being immunosuppressed

RedToothBrush · 10/02/2020 15:01

I have had some sort of illness constantly since mid November.

I've currently got a cough which I've had a couple of weeks or so which DS has now got.

It's definitely not coronavirus.

I do worry about being though of having it though. Especially DS.

It's already been a joke amongst friends though they all know I've been unwell for a while.

I've always had coughs that last at least a month, so have always carried on. The idea of having to avoid work for that long is ridiculous normally. Fortunately I don't work, but I still have to do the school run etc.

Unless everything gets shut down most people are just going to carry on and it's unrealistic to think differently especially since they won't be able to actively diagnose people unless they are very ill once contact tracing has ceased in effectiveness. The advice will be to self quarantine rather than attempt to get a formal diagnosis unless someone is very ill because of the risk of infecting someone who only has normal flu.

This is what they are saying possibly happens with Li Wieng

ofwarren · 10/02/2020 15:12

Are there many cases in Russia, with it bordering China? I don't recall reading anything about there.

IvyBush123 · 10/02/2020 15:12

I think the man who died in HongKong had both the flu and corona at the same time.

brainfogg · 10/02/2020 15:13

Thank you @ofwarren ❤️
@Lweji yeah it just came to me last night, the thought of having multiple viruses at once, will be interesting to know.

spacechimp · 10/02/2020 15:16

@brainfogg no, getting a flu jab would be fine, even though it's late in the season. I got one last week at Boots, and if it would help your anxiety to go somewhere quiet to get it then do that. I struggle with anxiety, especially around health, and I completely get how you're feeling and empathise. It's hard to know when to step away from reading and finding out more, and there is definitely a point where all it does is feed anxiety. It's very hard then to work out what the non-anxiety fuelled response is to anything

I can't say I'm following this, as I'm still reading online stuff and worrying, but I've been here before and I don't want to stop functioning, so trying to just focus on what I can control.

Hand washing is the main thing I can do, and getting a flu jab was the other. At least you've then lessened your chances of getting flu for this season. I listened to a virology podcast the other week and that was the main advice the virologists there had - hand washing, and getting your flu jab

NemophilistRebel · 10/02/2020 15:19

When does flu season normally end?

IvyBush123 · 10/02/2020 15:20

I think flu season ends in April.

Dh has health anxiety (because of having ptsd) and was very worried about this early on but now he ignores it. I think he chose to ignore because it gave him to much stress.

And I am not sure if I just got infected by his anxiety or if there is really much reason to worry. Typically I do not have health anxiety.

2 more confirmed cases in southampton school. school has been evacuated

2 more confirmed cases at he royal free hospital.

a community centre in brighton are also now self isolating after the brighton man visited a class last week .

SlayB · 10/02/2020 15:28

I'm with you @brainfogg the lack of hygiene I've witnessed after becoming more alert recently. People coughing without covering their mouth. Snot ridden tissues being over used one use only please ( This was the checkout person a grim sight)

People with normal flu have an RO of 0.9% 2019-nCoV is from 2.2 to 4
10% of people demonstrate as gastro disease which is scary considering that a Saga cruise ship with symptoms is due to dock on Wednesday. I think they should be at least screened first. So not always a dry cough 33% will have problems breathing and no go on to have pneumonia and a third with go on to suffer ARDS not to mention secondary bacterial infection that can occur after getting better.

Also they are problems with false negative tests on the flu trackers website. A patient was NEGATIVE for pharyngeal swab neocoronavirus nucleic acid tests THREE times before admission, and was finally tested positive for influenza A nucleic acid tests and admitted to the hospital.

Also no one is sure about length of time of the virus living on surfaces and whether it can be aerosol just breathing. I think prepare for the worst, and hope for the best!
