I am not sure if there is reason to worry about the new Coronavirus. I am not a medical expert but to be honest feel a bit scared because we know so little and some experts seem worried. How do you think?

Just heard on the news that the emergency powers have been brought in because there is a bloke in quarantine who is threatening to leave

What a dick. (If true)

NemophilistRebel · 10/02/2020 09:01

4 new cases in brighton confirmed

NemophilistRebel · 10/02/2020 09:03

news just said that the threat of catching coronavirus in uk hasnt changed. they are just introducing increased precautions

lynsey91 · 10/02/2020 09:04

No point in worrying about it because it's not going to change anything.

If I get it I get it. If it kills me so be it. We are all going to die one day

woodchuck99 · 10/02/2020 09:04

Interesting re emergency powers : people were horrified when they saw the Chinese authorities doing this, what an awful totalitarian country it Is...

I don't know anyone who was horrified. I think their actions to contain this have been very sensible and quite reassuring .You can't rely on people's goodwill.

NemophilistRebel · 10/02/2020 09:05

yes i for one am pleased with the level of action china has be doing

RapidRainbow · 10/02/2020 09:05

Also, I 100% believe the infection rate will be much higher than known, with many people displaying hardly any symptoms or very mild symptoms, much like the UK annual flu.

fripperyclose · 10/02/2020 09:06

I have quite bad anxiety about this but keep thinking about being around 25 and working in the nhs during the swine flu era and we had an emergency meeting about how staff levels could dwindle so much we might have to be deployed as porters etc (I was admin) and I remember rolling my eyes and being like "oh calm down, what a drama llama".
So I'm going to channel my carefree 25yr old self Grin.

Lweji · 10/02/2020 09:07

Verified reports, or internet hearsay?

In what China is concerned, truth probably lies somewhere in the middle.
They are known to be selective with it, even if the WHO has praised them for being (much more) open this time.

4 new cases in brighton confirmed

Do you have a link?

Also am I correct in that now makes 8 cases in the UK?

NemophilistRebel · 10/02/2020 09:09

here is link to live updates confirming new brihtong cases www.theguardian.com/world/live/2020/feb/10/coronavirus-live-updates-china-goes-back-to-work-as-cases-exceed-40000-latest-news

notanothergiftcard · 10/02/2020 09:09

People are being shockingly racist towards anyone of "Chinese" appearance (eye roll that anyone from that part of the word is automatically Chinese). My MIL was saying that DH and I shouldn't go on a planned trip to a university city later this month due to "all the chinese people".

People are so ignorant.

LarkDescending · 10/02/2020 09:10

The Guardian is reporting the 4 new Brighton cases. Linked to the Singapore/ski chalet/Mallorca/Brighton/London cluster.

LarkDescending · 10/02/2020 09:11

That Singapore conference has also been linked to clusters in (at least) Singapore, South Korea and Malaysia after delegates went home taking the virus with them.

Lweji · 10/02/2020 09:11

And what about places like Africa and South America, surely it’s there too be now? How will their primitive health systems cope with a pandemic?

Primitive?
Hmm

woodchuck99 · 10/02/2020 09:12

4 new cases in brighton confirmed

NemophilistRebel · 10/02/2020 09:12

AvocadoOwl · 10/02/2020 09:12

Also wondering where 4 new Brighton cases have been confirmed? I can't find anything.

NemophilistRebel · 10/02/2020 09:12

the guardian has live updates

covetingthepreciousthings · 10/02/2020 09:14

Sorry if this has already been answered, but to begin with is it just presenting as a mild cough? Then develops.

I'm just thinking, as it spreads, so many people won't realise, or they won't want to take time off work and will then go in and infect more. This concerns me , but is there something more to it & it can be easily distinguishable in the early days with the virus?

MangoFeverDream · 10/02/2020 09:15

We are vaccinated against the flu

Flu shots do not give you anywhere near 100% protection. You are lucky to get 40% during a typical season. Why do people even think this? Keep washing your hands and take sensible precautions!

You have far more chance of getting the flu anyway, flu shots or no.

LarkDescending · 10/02/2020 09:17

covetingthepreciousthings it presents as a fever and dry cough at first, sometimes developing to breathing difficulties.

From a public health point of view the fact that people are infectious before developing any symptoms at all is the biggest headache in trying to contain it. By the time a person is symptomatic and diagnosed they have been going about their lives as usual for up to 2 weeks.

LarkDescending · 10/02/2020 09:19

*unless they are diagnosed early (pre-symptoms) due to having been traced as a contact of a known patient.
