I am not sure if there is reason to worry about the new Coronavirus. I am not a medical expert but to be honest feel a bit scared because we know so little and some experts seem worried. How do you think?

@HasaDigaEebowai Where can I find this prepping board?
To be honest: we are a bit of preppers. Having nothing to do with this virus. We have been prepping before. It is because my dh has ptsd and prepping gives him some comfort

Other stuff, Preppers

HasaDigaEebowai · 10/02/2020 08:23

If you look under topics we have our own topic "preppers" (think its under "other stuff") but the current most active thread about coronavirus is here

Thanks a lot. I just started reading this thread and it says the seizure videos on Twitter where proven to be fakes. Is that true? Would be great because they scared me a lot.

I'm flying to New York this week
Not sure how I feel about being on a plane with the potential risk of infection

But at least we've decided against going to Hong Kong in April 🤣

PineappleCocktail · 10/02/2020 08:34

I'm starting to get a bit more concerned now. As I understand it the WHO went to China yesterday for the first time and now our Govt is starting to take it seriously, is that correct?

Trumpspeach · 10/02/2020 08:37

Just heard on the news that the emergency powers have been brought in because there is a bloke in quarantine who is threatening to leave. The new powers will enable the authorities to force him to stay. Although I do also suspect that there are more infections about to be announced...

DuploTower · 10/02/2020 08:41

I've heard others threaten to leave but they've been told they're liable for the bill if they do, which tends to calm them down

RhodaCamel · 10/02/2020 08:45

I’m getting really concerned now. There are reports from Chinese crematoriums that the number of deaths are so much higher than we are being told and I am really worrying about this virus mutating and getting more powerful the more it spreads. And what about places like Africa and South America, surely it’s there too be now? How will their primitive health systems cope with a pandemic? At what point should we be pulling our children out of school, stop going to crowded places, travel on any form of public transport etc? I have endless family and friends who are not concerned at all and still planning on travelling on planes etc, they don’t seem worried at all but I am, I don’t want to wait until it has rapidly spread everywhere especially when it comes to my children’s health? I am definitely panicking now?

woodchuck99 · 10/02/2020 08:45

I also think that the announcement is due to the fact that they want to stop relying on people to think of others and not spread this. Although the great majority of people will self quarantine etc If asked there always those selfish/ignorant tossers who won't cooperate.

They need to take stronger measures to try and contain this while they can (if it's not already too late).

notanothergiftcard · 10/02/2020 08:47

Verified reports, or internet hearsay?

kirinm · 10/02/2020 08:47

I've just seen on Twitter (completely unreliable) that a Chinese doctor has suggested the incubation period seems to range from 3-24 days. I've seen no evidence of that so it's probably complete rubbish.

What are the consequences of Matt Hancocks announcement today?

meredithgrey1 · 10/02/2020 08:48

I did wonder if this might be the case. If true then (barring extenuating circumstances), that guy is a dick.

NemophilistRebel · 10/02/2020 08:51

What a dick to not give a shit like that

Good job they are bringing in these measures then

woodchuck99 · 10/02/2020 08:52

I'm sure that the death rate is much higher but then so will the infection rates to be higher. It doesn't mean the virus is more deadly. The virus may mutating get worse but then it may get better as seemed to happen with the swine flu.

Ciwirocks · 10/02/2020 08:52

I am getting worried now but I do remember the previous sars/ swine flu/ ebola outbreaks and how I eventually relented and panicked then all for no reason. I am hoping this will be the same, we will reach peak panic level and it will all die down. I am watching carefully though, I think there are a lot more people with it than recorded, look how many we know of that the man who caught it in Singapore has infected. I just pray that most people get mild symptoms. Even if it’s like the flu and most people recover, taking a large number of people out of the workforce would be a nightmare. There is so much that needs thinking about over this.

ShanghaiDiva · 10/02/2020 08:55

Interesting re emergency powers : people were horrified when they saw the Chinese authorities doing this, what an awful totalitarian country it Is... now the same powers are to be used in the Uk people are relieved as it protects the majority of people from the thoughtless actions of people who will not comply with the quarantine.
How ironic.

RhodaCamel · 10/02/2020 08:56

notanothergiftcard probably internet hearsay (I absolutely hope so) feeding my out of control health anxiety.

covetingthepreciousthings · 10/02/2020 08:59

*We are supposed to be going to the o2 for a concert in a few weeks. Now I’m debating wether it’s safe too or not

Anyone any thoughts?*

I'm supposed to be going to concert in a nearby city next week, the thought of being surrounded by all those people & their germs is making me feel anxious, but then I do think both myself & DH work in public facing roles, so could just quite as easily come in to contact with it at work. I guess if you're going to get it, it will probably be inevitable in the end, so might as well enjoy things in the meantime - unless they start putting restrictions in place.

RapidRainbow · 10/02/2020 09:00

I'm one to usually overreact, yet when I saw the news this morning I imagined that despite the shocking headlines, it will actually mean something less dramatic. So it's not the case of an imminent pandemic as it sounds but rather by declaring the threat allows them to do things to step in and fight it more so than they could usually do.

I'm teetering on the edge of full blown anxiety about it but managing to keep a level head right now based on:

  • Very low number of UK cases
  • Deaths most common from people who would risk the same outcome with seasonal flu
  • Half term next week coincides with the end of the incubation period for a lot of the brits evacuated from Wuhan so a chance for the infection rate to be better known ahead of schools returning.
  • ignoring the Internet rumours of more deaths, its inevitable there will be conspiracies coming out of such a situation

Strongly advise anyone with health anxiety to avoid these threads. It is not going to help you. Stick to official news only (if you must). These threads and similar forums are full of "I've heard X" or "Apparently X is happening" - these are not verified sources.
