I am not sure if there is reason to worry about the new Coronavirus. I am not a medical expert but to be honest feel a bit scared because we know so little and some experts seem worried. How do you think?

Bats also carry rabies

SebandAlice · 04/02/2020 18:23

Did anyone see this? This is supposed to be leaked from the QQ site that is maintaining the official figures in mainland China as of the 1st Feb:
154023 infected
79808 suspected
269 recovered
24589 dead

Not RTFT, but does anyone know why they've set quarantine to 14 days? Do they know enough about the virus to know that it isn't contagious after that time?

NaturalBornWoman · 04/02/2020 18:33

SebandAlice where did that come from?

woodchuck99 · 04/02/2020 18:40

What do you mean?
I've already posted that other European countries are bringing people in. Including one person who was infected, it turned out.

I'm not talking about evacuating people from the highest risk areas. (the UK has done that too). I'm talking about the fact they have suggested all UK citizens in China leave if they can.

NemophilistRebel · 04/02/2020 18:40

@SebandAlice that’s bloody scary if true

Dennisreynoldsduster · 04/02/2020 18:40

@sebandalice where is that from?! That’s terrifying if it’s legitimate

woodchuck99 · 04/02/2020 18:43

You can't believe everything you read on the Internet.

HairyFloppins · 04/02/2020 18:46

Are those figures real? I was worried enough, but really panicking now.

woodchuck99 · 04/02/2020 18:54

Don't panic. There's loads of hoax and misinformation out there. If there were really that many dead or infected I don't believe they would have exact figures. That in itself is suspicious.

Lweji · 04/02/2020 18:54

It's more that if you haven't developed symptoms by then, then you're very unlikely to have been infected. They will also do tests if there are suspicions, if possible.

It has to do with the incubation period. I.e. the time between infection and the first symptoms.

Lweji · 04/02/2020 19:00

269 recovered
24589 dead

I find that very hard to believe.

marvellousnightforamooncup · 04/02/2020 19:01

Not worried yet but watching with concern. I work in a pharmacy so probably will be seeing people if it spreads and ds has a chronic health condition. Most people will recover like flu but for weaker people it's bad.

Not sure how the NHS will cope.

HIVpos · 04/02/2020 19:04

@Maighdeann do you have any links to more info re the man who died in the Philippines who was HIV+? I'm interested to know if he was on treatment for HIV etc

Lweji · 04/02/2020 19:10

269 recovered
24589 dead

Is actually reversed. The image is (presumably) in Chinese.
See WHO update for the same day.

It should read, I'm guessing:
269 recovered dead
24589 dead recovered

RedToothBrush · 04/02/2020 20:43

It's odd that the UK are suggesting people come home when no one else is.

Except they are.

Also the advice isn't simply due to coronavirus itself, its also because of they don't want to have to rescue stranded Brits unable to get home and because there potentially are going to be human rights concerns and food shortages connected with the lock down in the next couple of weeks.

The advice being given now is not simply because of coronavirus.

woodchuck99 · 04/02/2020 20:48

Except they are

Who else is telling everyone to leave China? Obviously countries are evacuating people from high-risk areas but I haven't heard that they are telling people to leave all parts of China. And yes I realise that it's to do with the fact they don't want to have to rescue anyone.

www.cnbc.com/amp/2020/02/04/researchers-say-the-coronavirus-may-be-more-contagious-than-current-data-shows.html?__twitter_impression=true "China's Health Minister Ma Xiaowei recently told reporters there is evidence it's already mutated into a stronger variation that is able to spread more easily among humans."
WTF?

Oakenbeach · 04/02/2020 20:50

I read somewhere that 21,389,028 people were infected and 3,458,928 people had died..... SadShock

I also read that the Queen was a reptilian shape-shifter and that Elvis was alive and well on Mars.

Go figure....

wouldyouadamandeveit · 04/02/2020 21:19

@Lweji thanks. Am just concerned that it could potentially take longer for symptoms to develop, but by the sounds of it, not. Though I do also worry that some people might be carriers and go beyond that timeline. Disclaimer - no medical training!

RoseAndRose · 04/02/2020 21:19

A number of countries, including France and US, updated their travel advice and now recommend all citizens now leave China by commercial means.

Whilst it's still possible, I guess.

nellodee · 04/02/2020 21:32

My concern with this is that we have a whole string of countries that have borrowed money through China's belt and roads initiatives. Many of these countries do not have systems in place that can possibly either detect or deal with an outbreak. Pakistan, for example, whilst having no "official" cases, also only received its first testing kits yesterday. For these countries, it is more important to remain allies with China than to close borders and report cases, so we have Pakistan reopening flights when everyone else is cancelling theirs, and Cambodia's prime minister offering to visit Wuhan in a show of support and denial. The same goes to various extents for a whole swathe of similarly indebted countries like Myanmar and Thailand.

These countries have to weigh the fact that they cannot really do a great deal even if the virus reaches them against the potential loss of support from their most powerful ally. Advice from Pakistan's health advisory board is to wash your hands and trust to god. Which to be honest, is probably reasonably accurate advice for those countries (and maybe ours too).

The question is, will we actually know on an international level when and how bad infection in these countries gets? Pakistan (sorry for picking on Pakistan) has a terrible record of covering up epidemics. Apparently, following wiping out the worst form of Polio, it then accidentally reintroduced it to a child from a lab, which then spread into the general population, and then instead of coming clean, decided to implement secret inoculations (I wish this was tinfoil hat stuff, but its reported in mainstream papers like the Guardian and Telegraph).

So how long are we going to be worrying about people who have been to China, before we should be worrying about people coming from Pakistan and all these other countries that may have outbreaks without ever testing for them or reporting them? I read an article somewhere, can't remember where, which likened the situation to us fending off incoming ping pong balls. You can bat them back so long as they come in at a certain rate, but at some point, if it just becomes a hail storm, then you can't do anything about it.

As I see it, Pandora's box is well and truly open, and we are going to have a rough old year. Boris Johnson always wanted to play Churchill, let's hope he can pull off the role. I truly hope this challenge brings out the best of us and not the worst. I know lots of people who work in the NHS and I know how hard they work. If anyone can keep us safe, they can. I really hope this ends up being much closer to swine flu than SARS.

I am also a big fan of having history prove that extrapolation is far less reliable than interpolation and I really, really hope that it makes me look a right old wally this time around.

mindfulprep · 04/02/2020 22:10

Gosh the thinly veiled racism starts.

All people who have travelled from China recently should self-quarantine for 14 days.

Regardless of nationality or race.

As to whether we should worry or not, I'm not for myself and my family - no, the risk is low and if nhs can't cope we can go private.

For people in China especially Wuhan and many developing countries that have no adequate healthcare, I'm very worried
