To ask how many clothing washes do you do a day?

Starting to think my family are manky 🙈
Have just put on my first wash in 6 days. As a family of 5, its built up (I've not been well enough)
But I've only got another load and some towels and sheets to do. So another 2 washes.

Speaking to a friend who does 3 a day Blush I'm wondering how she has the time?!

I should add that our washing machine is 9kg so fits more than usual and towels get reused if it's just been the kids that use them or they were only used for drying hair.

Am I really that unusual?

On average about 6/7 a week, lights and darks for us and then seperate washes for 8 week old DD. Currently on mat leave so manage to cram them in during a weekday and then we have the weekend free!

TooGood2BeTrue · 03/02/2020 14:16

I do between 1 and 2 loads of dark, 1 load of lights and 1 load of towels each week. When I wash bedding, that'll be another load. Kids play outside after school each day, so most of their uniform has to washed after 1 day at this time of year. Coats also get muddier in the winter. In the summer I tend to have less washing as no body wears jumpers or coats, less underwear, no socks, etc. and things don't get covered in mud.

rattusrattus20 · 03/02/2020 14:16

1 load per week per family member is IMO a broadly sensible amount. This is for an 'average' family, e.g. probably assuming no babies/sports kits/etc.

Darkbendis · 03/02/2020 14:17

About 4 washes/week, famiky of 4.

One dark and one light wash every weekend
One colours and one with sheets and towel every other weekend.
Possibly a mid week wash if there is an item that is urgent.

How on earth do people make enough washing in one day to put on? Surely in one day you only have one pair of socks and knickers per person, and possibly a dirty pair of trousers or a top?

user1496146479 · 03/02/2020 14:18

Family of 6 here. 2/3 washes a day! If I miss a day, it's hard to catch up! Some days might also have sports wear etc too
I seem to always have a washing on the go (waiting to be washed, in wash, in dryer, in ironing pile, in basket waiting to be put away!) never ending! Wine

amusedbush · 03/02/2020 14:20

It's only me and DH in our house and we tend to do two loads a week, usually Wednesday and Sunday. I don't separate colours or fabrics either, so it all goes in and I've never had a disaster!

LochJessMonster · 03/02/2020 14:20

@Wejustdontknow why can't you do your and your kids towels together?

And how do you get enough darks in one day for a load?

CremeEggThief · 03/02/2020 14:22

You and your friend are both unusual in your laundry habits.Grin

I have a 7 kg washing machine and do between 5 and 7 loads for 2 people every week, most at the weekend.

1× coloureds and darks. Occasionally 2.
1× whites (school shirts).
1× towels and bathrobes. (We use ours all week).
1× bathmat, mophead and cleaning cloths.
1× bedding. (I wash mine one week and DS's the next).
1×sofa throws about once a month.
1× woollens, every week or two in winter.

rebecca102 · 03/02/2020 14:23

1 everyday. To me washing takes no time. It takes 30 seconds to put the machine on, 10 minutes to hang out or 1 minute to put in the dryer and 15 minutes to fold and put away. In between you're doing nothing in regards to the washing. I dunno why people let it build up.

BrimfulofSasha · 03/02/2020 14:23

We only do washing on a saturday.
1 lot of lights or colours (me and DD)
1 lot of darks (me and DD)
2 lots of bedding and towels
1 lot of OH stuff.

We got rid of our tumble dryer when it died and now just dry at the local laundrette- can dry all of the above in 2 industrial driers in half an hour. saving time and money.

Your friend needs to tell her family that they can wear things more than once (other than undies) it's really bad for clothing to overwash.

Lipperfromchipper · 03/02/2020 14:28

When I built my house I put my laundry room in between my walk in wardrobe and the bathroom...I have laundry basket on rails going from a cupboard in the wardrobe into a cupboard in the laundry room and another from the bathroom side (where the dc get changed) IT IS AMAZING and so much time gets saved...I don’t have to traipse around the house with washing ever!! only when I am putting it away!!

BlackInk · 03/02/2020 14:29

We're 2 adults and 2DC and do a wash most days.

Towels and pyjamas only get washed once a week-ish and bedding probably less often... We're pretty clean though, change tea towels, kitchen cloths, underwear and white school shirts daily. Other clothes just when they're grubby or have been worn 2 or 3 times.

Kids are always getting coats muddy or spilling drinks on the throws/blankets in the sitting room, and these take up a bit of space in the machine.

No drier here so can only really dry one load a day on airers or in the garden in summer.

MerryDeath · 03/02/2020 14:31

crikey! i did two a week when i was single, one being bedsheets/towels.

i try to put one on a day. but i do have a baby and toddler - there are solids and liquids flying everywhere (it's been 1 a day since toddler arrived). my DH contributes almost nothing to this as he's filthy or is he very clean 🤔

Spudlet · 03/02/2020 14:32

Two adults, one preschooler, one dog here. I do one wash a day generally - clothes or towels or bedding. Plus on one day I’ll do a sports wash for my gym and running kit, and every couple of weeks an extra wash for the sofa throws. DS is going through a pants wetting phase at the moment so can easily go through two pairs of trousers or more in a day - if I don’t keep up, he’ll run out of clothes. And we live in the country as well so there’s a lot of mud at this time of year, no matter what you do.

MaccaPacca81 · 03/02/2020 14:35

2 loads a week max.

2 adults only.

Towels weekly. Bedding every other week. Then it's just t-shirts and underwear.

Jeans should only be washed every few months. Suits go to the dry cleaners. Jumpers get washed when out of shape or dirty.

I get it if you have kids but for adults, I cant understand why people do so much washing!

lilyheather1 · 03/02/2020 14:37

2 adults here with 2 dogs. Normally one darks and one lights wash per week and the occasional towel/ bedding wash when we remember!

Washinglinewench29 · 03/02/2020 14:38

Family of four literally only put a wash on windy days so can hang it out 😂

Mintjulia · 03/02/2020 14:40

Three a week, two whites/sheets and one darks. 7kg machine. Family of two.

I’ve never ironed a sock in my life. What for?

wonkylegs · 03/02/2020 14:41

2 adults, 2 kids - one still toilet training
5 washes a week but every other week I do another full load of DHs scrubs

Kyriesmum1 · 03/02/2020 14:44

Family of 6 minimum of 3 washes a day with a 9kg washing machine x

Everythingmagnolia · 03/02/2020 14:44

4 of us here, about 4 loads a week? My friend washes all the towels after a single use which I think is insane!

Rosebel · 03/02/2020 14:47

There's only 4 of us two adults and two nearly teens and I do at least 1 load of washing per day. Used to be two when the girls were younger.

Hercwasonaroll · 03/02/2020 14:49

Approx 1 per day here. Used to be a lot lower but we have a sicky baby in cloth nappies. 2 adults, toddler and baby.

2 x nappy washes
2 x dark washes
1 x white wash
1x towels or bedding
1x random depends what the baby has thrown up over.
