To expect DH to do this for me

Every weekend DH cooks breakfast.

And every weekend my fried egg is too hard.

I only like dippy eggs. If he's going to go to the trouble of cooking bacon, black pudding, square sausage, mushrooms, eggs and toast, he could at least get the eggs right.

AIBU to expect him to take more care?

Isn't the whole point of fried eggs that the middle just be dippy runny?

Well, yes. It is. So it’s beyond my fathoming why anyone thinks a hard fried egg would be in any way acceptable. And especially not when OP cooks for her DH all week, and this is the only thing he ever cooks for her.

MN is weird sometimes.

OP, you said you don’t complain.. Start complaining.

TheMustressMhor · 01/02/2020 16:07

Thank you MrsCBY I shall trigger the Mhor Household Complaints Procedure immediately.

Excellent news.

I look forward to hearing an update about satisfactorily runny-yolked eggs appearing in said Mhor household soonest.

Casualbride · 01/02/2020 16:11

I have never mastered the fried egg. If I flip it the yolk either breaks or goes hard, but if I don’t flip it the top stays snotty.

diddl · 01/02/2020 16:15

To me it's akin to knowing how much sugar someone takes for example.

It's a simple thing, easily remembered & carried out if you care enough.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 01/02/2020 16:16

YANBU

The dippy fried egg is the best bit.

Personally, I would LTB

CharlotteCollinsneeLucas · 01/02/2020 16:18

You need the right implement to flip it with, I think, Casualbride. A good thin large spatula to get right underneath it.

LondonJax · 01/02/2020 16:21

Ask him to do scrambled egg instead. Problem solved, marriage saved.

Casualbride · 01/02/2020 16:22

But even if you can flip it without breaking the yolk how do you stop the yolk from going hard?

steppemum · 01/02/2020 16:30

hmm, I think OP is getting a hard time.

She does 90% of the cooking, he does 2 meals per week, and can't be bothered to do it how she likes it.

When I cook for the family, I do take into account their likes and dislikes, and (up to a point) adapt when I can. Something like runny or hard eggs, I would do as the perosn likes them.

It doesn't seem to me to be a huge ask for dh to do the same.

steppemum · 01/02/2020 16:33

by the way, the secret to the fried egg is:

get a small fry pan, and find a lid that fits.
Cook the eggs in this pan with the lid on. The lid keeps the steam in so that the top of the egg is cooked by the steam. A glass lid is best so you can see the moment when the white on the top goes opaque and whisk them out before the yellow cooks.

In th eold days they did this by having deep fat to fry the egg in, so the top was under fat, or by gently swooshing the fat up and over the top of the egg. Neither of which is healthy, hence the steam.

TendsToHappen · 01/02/2020 16:38

I find cooked breakfast one of the most super stressful meals to make. There’s massive timing issues and most of the ingredients are completely unforgiving. Eggs is one of the hardest things to get right, and hot. (I cook a lot, and very adventurously). For this reason YABU. It’s hard to get it right!

Myimaginarycathasfleas · 01/02/2020 16:39

The lid keeps the steam in so that the top of the egg is cooked by the steam

My DH does this, but then it's a steamed egg, which has a completely different (rubbery) texture.

Me, I flip the egg for a few seconds, just enough to sear the top, not enough to cook the yolk.

Casualbride · 01/02/2020 16:41

Well I’ve not tried it with a lid! Will give that a go.

steppemum · 01/02/2020 16:54

Me, I flip the egg for a few seconds, just enough to sear the top, not enough to cook the yolk.

see I really dislike it when flipped!

each to their own!

NotALurker2 · 01/02/2020 16:55

Runny yolks is the entire point of fried eggs IMO. Hard yolks aren't even worth eating.

What does he say when you mention it? Is he registering your complaint? If he has a lot going on at once, it's hard to keep track of the eggs.

Do you have a dog? I would just give my yolks to the dog....but even our dog prefers runny yolks.

I'm with you, OP. This would bother me and make me feel disappointed on a regular basis. It's worth mentioning that I'm single....so maybe look past it, even though your feelings are valid.

Oysterbabe · 01/02/2020 16:58

Yanbu. Cooking eggs is not difficult and it isn't a lot to ask that they are done how you like them.

TheMustressMhor · 01/02/2020 16:59

BTW I do not like scrambled egg.

Just saying.

OP posts:
Oysterbabe · 01/02/2020 17:01

I made poached eggs in my pressure cooker this morning and they came out great.

To expect DH to do this for me
DandyAF · 01/02/2020 17:02

I really think that if he was using gas to cook on you wouldn’t have this problem. The fact that there’s not any gas in your part of Scotland, is that your MIL’s fault?

Tillygetsit · 01/02/2020 17:03

I'm very sorry OP but you're coming across as a spoilt princess.

Maryann1975 · 01/02/2020 17:03

Op, YANBU! I have made the effort to figure out how to cook fried eggs as dh likes them. There is, in my head, little point in making a meal he really likes (a cooked breakfast) but getting one of the bits wrong becasue I can’t be bothered to get it right for him. I would expect him to have a similar consideration to my tastes if it were reversed. I think he is showing you a lack of respect in not at least trying to do your egg as you like it.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 01/02/2020 17:03

Poached eggs in a pressure cooker, Oyster?

That doesn't seem possible. Do you just bring them to pressure, then release it and take them out?

I like poached egg,

Oysterbabe · 01/02/2020 17:05

I have an instant pot. I used the silicone mold thingy. I gave them 3 minutes at high pressure then quick release and they came out just how I like them.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 01/02/2020 17:06

FWIW - my DH likes his egg yolk fried hard (sick bastard!). I have to break the yolk, and fry the egg on both sides to ensure inedibility the are solid.

DD and I are normal as regard fried eggs.
