Response to first 2 UK cases of coronavirus not robust enough

MissPoldark · 01/02/2020 09:25

The hotel is still open and accepting visitors. Apparently they weren’t immediately informed that 2 of their guests had been diagnosed.
All public areas should have been deep cleaned but there is no suggestion this has been done.

No details are being released about where the tourists had visited (because of “patient confidentiality” - bureaucracy is dangerous) How on earth can anyone in York know whether they’ve been put at risk?
How can they trace possible contacts without making this information public?

@MindyStClaire

I'm laughing at everyone up in arms at Trafalgar. What she has described must be the case for half of my colleagues, including me now I think of it.

Its pretty ridiculous, isn't it? Mumsnet is proper hysterical about Corona virus. I wish they'd all calm down a bit

So if the news said they'd been in York shopping and visited the Jorvik Centre what do you think would happen? Mass hysteria. Scores or even hundreds of people turning up at the hospital wanting to be tested.

This exactly sums it up. Based on the sheer amount of Corona virus threads on mumsnet in the last week, it's be stupid for media to give details out. You'd all be rushing to A&E as soon as you PFB let out a sneeze!

Apparently you dont sneeze with it. A vaccine has been developed and is being tested

Advice is currently that you need to be in contact within 2metres of the infected persons for 15 mins for it to be a problem. The problem with listening to media is it tends to make us all experts. Apparently, the room has had a professional clean, I would hope within expectations. You are just as likely to get this from someone on a bus. The guidelines could change because so many have got it. They want to stop it is much as anyone. To suggest otherwise is silly, it was always going to spread to the UK.

A lot of people wouldn't even know they'd had it if it presents as cold/flu like symptoms at first. Not all go on to the more serious symptoms.

I'm surprised though that they haven't tested on the people holed up in the Wirral by now in nurses/doctors accommodation. I guess I thought it would just take a day. They seem pretty comfortable anyway.

OP, you (none of us) have even half the information the authorities have. Let the public health experts do their job.

@Trafalger I hope you are a troll

Why? for behaving normally and appropriately?

Trafalgar in their initial post said they had cold/flu symptoms after being in contact with Chinese students.

It’s quite reasonable (and not hysterical) go question someone as to why they haven’t sought medical advise in those circumstances.

Obviously they then came back and it was just a cold with no temp and they’d already spoken to 111 Hmm

Report
Trafalger · 01/02/2020 15:35

No @TeddyIsaHe I called 111 after the hysteria that came off here. I dont want to infect anyone and I wanted to be sure. I was 99.9% sure anyway to he honest. I was just proving a point that people can have minor contact with chinese people and have a cold and there is no point for this hysteria. It is out in the population. There is not much else that can be done unless in a week or so we close down the country! I do remember this hysteria with swine flu though and then when 100k people caught it in this country everyone just got used to it.

TeddyIsaHe · 01/02/2020 15:49

Tbh @Trafalgar you came on to be a bit goofy and you know it. Otherwise why would you be going on about possibly, but maybe not having symptoms and then going about your business.

You don’t get to call people hysterical for calling you out.

BBC news this morning said that the hotel was being subjected to a deep clean.

Newly arrived Chinese students should really be subject to a 2 week quarantine in their accommodation. Along with anyone else recently returned from China

Are all areas of China affected? It's a very big country.

And you do realise that what you're proposing is tantamount to house arrest, don't you?

Trafalger I remember during the swine flu panic that I had to take DD to hospital because she had a temperature that wouldn't go down and was being sick. We had masks put on us and were rushed through the waiting room to the isolation unit.

We were then left there until they did a test to confirm that she didn't have swine flu. It was quite scary as the doors were locked and we were told that we couldn't leave. As it turned out she had a UTI.

I still have a pack of surgical masks left from then so I suppose they could come in handy!

feellikeanalien I had similar for myself. I was really poorly that winter. I was taken into hospital and had a room in an isolation room in the Tropical Diseases ward. Everyone who came to visit me in the first 24 hours before my screening test came back had to wear a gown and ask, even dd who was about 8 at the time. The staff all wore masks and gowns to come and speak to me too.

I didn't have Swine Flu as it turned out - although I will be on the NHS numbers as the online screening said I may have and I was prescribed Tamiflu before I was admitted. I actually had a nasty bout of pneumonia, which is what my GP had suspected but the hospital wouldn't risk it.

Mind you, they didn't move me so I did end up with my own private ensuite room for the duration of my stay.

No Teddy. You can check all my other posts I have not been " goady " on here ever. I was just saying unless we are sealing everyone up who may have had contact then gets the sniffles which would put a lot of people out of action, we need to get some perspective. We do not know who we have been in contact with, I went shopping this afternoon and had a trolley. Who's to say someone hasn't touched it that isn't showing any symptoms yet but could still be shedding the virus? Once it goes worldwide like this, it is stupid to worry as much as we are. We can never be sure who has or hadn't touched anything.l before we do. I do plenty of hand washing, good hygiene and I have still got a cold....

It's funny that those in higher ed are so stoic as as a major Uni in Australia has delayed classes for a couple of weeks due to the virus.

China is a country of over 1 billion people and only 11,000 people have caught the virus. The virus is largely hitting a select number of cities so it is ridiculous to think that any Chinese students are a risk - China covers an area the size of Europe. If there was an outbreak of flu in Romania would you think it reasonable for all Europeans to be quarantined or treated as infectious?

Absolutely. Flu kills thousands in this country every year and yet people refuse the vaccine every day. I wonder what is driving the hysteria around Corona virus? Very interesting.

No just the ones coming from the hot zone.

It's a novel virus. No one has immunity. There are no antiviral treatments. 12,000 have been infected in 11 days. WHO has declared a global health emergency which they don't for seasonal flu. HTH

It's not ebola FFS. Most people have mild symptoms. HTH

None of us in the house caught ‘normal’ flu from ds so I’m not unduly concerned about corona.
I hear they are deep cleaning the hotel now.
