AIBU?

Response to first 2 UK cases of coronavirus not robust enough

The hotel is still open and accepting visitors. Apparently they weren’t immediately informed that 2 of their guests had been diagnosed.
All public areas should have been deep cleaned but there is no suggestion this has been done.

No details are being released about where the tourists had visited (because of “patient confidentiality” - bureaucracy is dangerous) How on earth can anyone in York know whether they’ve been put at risk?
How can they trace possible contacts without making this information public?

The comments from 11 months ago on this thread gave me the chills.

I recall that at the time we were having similar conversations at work.

My best mate is a hospital doctor and told me it was serious. The scientists and the medics knew. Who listened to them?

@Trafalger - do you think you had Covid now?! Hmm

@PhilCornwall1@Schuyler - how are you both doing?

@MissPoldark I wish you had been at the helm of our pandemic response. This thread is shocking. How naive we were...

Op and a couple of others, Woodchuck poster, stood out as being very astute.

@Schuyler

The good news is that the healthy people probably won’t die and would just be unwell and recover. I find it’s healthy people who panic the most. The bad news it that people like me probably will die. It’s worrying but equally, the regular old flu could kill me. I have a mild sense of fear all the time that I’ll catch “just a virus”. I have nearly died on 2 occasions and it may very well happen again. Perhaps that’s made me complacent. I live with this constantly and live goes on for people like me.....until it doesn’t. I can not control that. I live my life to the best of my ability.

At this point in time, it is statistically very improbable that you or I will get the Coronavirus in the U.K. There’s no evidence at the moment to make me overly concerned.

@EssentialHummus - the last paragraph of this jumped out at me. It is weird though to read these “before we knew” posts. I’m sure I was probably guilty of that too!

Someone I know who works in healthcare told me in Feb they were very worried about this. They had gone through SARS in 2002.
If only countries had been more like Taiwan who basically hit the ground running. They had a pandemic programme all ready sorted. 7 deaths.

I remember being frustrated last February that no one seemed to be taking CV seriously enough.

Even people who did think like that then though I do t think could have predicted how it turned out.

I can't understand why people in the UK are only supposed to self isolate for 10 days now. Even back in Feb on this thread 14 days isolation was mentioned! Is that why it's so bad there now?

Report
whereismormonjesus · 20/01/2021 23:53

Yes, even though I knew it’d kick off I didn’t think it would get this bad. I predicted perhaps a 6 week school closure, non-essential business shut, and naively thought they’d get a stringent track and trace system in place and we’d be out the other side before Summer.

I remember reading this last year while I was on holiday
My husband thought I was nuts but I booked Tesco’s slots something I had never done before and ordered face masks and hand gel while sat on the beach😁
Crazy to think how those posters who were seen as a bit OTT were actually pretty much spot on .

Emeraldshamrock · 21/01/2021 00:10

Another here who believed it would be over by the summer unless successful vaccines are administered quickly.
6/7 weeks ago I was admittedly smug Ireland was doing so well, I expected the numbers to go up a bit over December it is like a tornado now.

I can’t even remember coronavirus being news this early in the year. We were on holiday at February half term and I just remember the news being all about Caroline Flack.

Wow. I guess it’s hardly surprising that we are in the position we are in now, when this thread so clearly illustrates the woolly early response and many people’s corresponding attitudes.

Do you really think the government wants to risk this spreading? They are 100% doing everything they need to
In reality they did the opposite.

It is a horrid look into three past when many people were oblivious. I always felt this was going to get worse and remember the 'aibu to be worried about Coronavirus' thread. I voted yanbu and (I think) most folk felt the op was being unreasonable. This is one occasion where I wish I were wrong.

I clearly remember chatting to my friend in Canada back last February and us both worrying more about the second wave and this winter time.

YABVU. Do you really think the government wants to risk this spreading? They are 100% doing everything they need to. Threads like this are massively unhelpful and just get people worried for no reason.

OMG the naivety!

@Trafalger

I have come down with a cold and flu type symptoms after mixing with newly arrived chinese students this week at work. I am saying it's just a cold but it could be something more who knows! I will still go about my business as I am pretty sure it's a cold but once this virus is as widespread as it is now, who will know if it's a cold/flu or Coronavirus?

And, this one! Shock
