I have just discovered, by accident, that if you open another tab in your web browser, you can click on the tab and drag it away so that you have a second separate browser open at the same time. I don't mean split screen but like you have opened a separate thing. Did you all know this already?

I know this is a pathetic thing to get excited about but I was literally like this Shock and then giddy with excitement.

AIBU to be be pleased with my discovery?

I started a new job last week and the woman who was showing me what to do etc was using all the convoluted mouse taps to cut and paste etc. She let me take over the thing we were doing and started telling me I was doing it wrong when I just instinctively did Ctrl and V or Ctrl and P - she was Shock when she saw it was working.

InOtterNews · 31/01/2020 14:09

mygrandchildrenrock Am I the only one who has been merrily trying all the computer tips I've learnt today? Thank you!

I tried a couple knowing works like this on a Mac. I desperately need Macbook shortcut thread

GiveHerHellFromUs · 31/01/2020 14:10

@Boobahs and if you double tap the space bar while typing it gives you a full stop and space

GiveHerHellFromUs · 31/01/2020 14:11

@InOtterNews command, alt and 4 lets you screenshot a certain area. Command, alt and 5 (I think - if not 5 it's 3) let's you screenshot the whole screen and saves it to your desktop.

Have you got your hot corners set up?

midclegs · 31/01/2020 14:24

Ha @JustHereWithMyPopcorn

Mine; on the fuel gauge in your car there is always a little sign indicating which side of the car you fill up from

Gillibean · 31/01/2020 14:28

@Beldon there are actually three Hemsworths!

And what a gene pool that is!

InOtterNews · 31/01/2020 14:36

@GiveHerHellFromUs hot....corners...? >_>

I've had to completely relearn how to use a computer thanks to work! Even finding the fucking # key has been chore (I do love my Mac though)

AQuickNameChange1 · 31/01/2020 14:37

I also use a potato peeler to slice cheese from a block.

GiveHerHellFromUs · 31/01/2020 14:39

@InOtterNews yeah it's somewhere in the settings (i use a Mac for work and have been on mat leave for 10 months so can't say exactly where) but you can basically set up shortcuts.

For example if I move my cursor to the top right hand corner it'll minimise all my windows (handy if you need to open a document on your desktop for example) and if I go to the top left it shows you all the screens you've got open - makes it easier to flit between multiple documents).
It's much more useful than I'm making it sound Grin

Wasail · 31/01/2020 14:42

wowfudge absolutly not Grin

Beldon · 31/01/2020 14:43

@Gillibean they are a gorgeous family, their mum looks half her age. It was Chris and Liam that I was seeing as the same person - for an embarrassingly long time Grin

InOtterNews · 31/01/2020 14:47

@GiveHerHellFromUs this could be revolutionary. Just set them up - probably need to switch them around as I keep locking my screen 😄

Howgreenwasmyvalley · 31/01/2020 14:52

Big mango. It's not true, it doesn't work for every car. Doesn't for mine.

wanderings · 31/01/2020 14:56

Of course coppers are legal tender. Hasn't it been known for people to use wheelbarrow loads of them to protest about paying a bill they're paying under duress? Such as the final demand for a TV licence payment, or council tax, before they're carted off to prison.

Percentages are reversible e.g. 8% of 25 is the same as 25% of 8.
True. But one thing that is not reversible in the way many people think (I'm always turning blue teaching this in GCSE maths): suppose you increase something by 25%, which you can do my multiplying by 1.25. To undo this, you do not decrease it by 25%: this gives the wrong answer. Instead, you divide by 1.25.

PhilCornwall1 · 31/01/2020 14:57

I also use a potato peeler to slice cheese from a block.

Genius!! I'm grabbing that one!!

Hagbeth · 31/01/2020 15:20

If you always wait ages for your coffee to cool down when in the coffee shop, just order the coffee with an ice cube or two!

SoupDragon · 31/01/2020 15:23

It's not true, it doesn't work for every car.

It works for every car that has the triangle on the icon though. I suppose the fact is better describes as "if there is a triangle on the picture of a petrol pump, that's the side your filler cap is on"

Hagbeth · 31/01/2020 15:27

@AQuickNameChange1 You can also get Scandinavian style cheese slicers.

Couldnt do the click and drag new tab, but the right click menu is AMAZING

Newbie1999 · 31/01/2020 15:31

Tech tip for people who aren't as tech-savvy as me:

When you press the h button on your keyboard, you get a lower-case h. But what if you want an upper-case h? Easy! Just go to the wikipedia page on horses, copy the upper-case h and paste it into your document. Problem solved 👍

PhilCornwall1 · 31/01/2020 17:11

@Newbie1999

👍sorted!! Now I know how it's done. 😊

poorbuthappy · 31/01/2020 18:13

My favourite are the keyboard shortcuts.
Degree symbol/cubed/squared/diameter using alt + 4 digit number. And getting it wrong and discovering loads of random symbols!

Newbie1999 · 31/01/2020 18:25

Also a gym tip: A lot of people at the gym go and lift the big weights. But actually, the small weights are lighter and much easier to lift.

honeybeetheoneandonly · 01/02/2020 00:12

Not a game changer but recently found out that, if you don't have internet connection and see the little dinosaur instead of your desired webpage, just click on the dinosaur for a nice little game. I never knew. Now I can't wait for my internet connection to go down.

safariboot · 01/02/2020 01:36

@DeltaFlyer Today I Learned. Well, I sort of knew the visors did that, I just never realised it was supposed to be useful that they did it.

Here's mine. Ctrl+Insert and Shift+Insert also work for copy and paste as well as the usual Ctrl+C and Ctrl+V. It rarely matters but there's a few programs where one works but not the other.

And another that's surprised some people I know. Some cars have the indicator stalk on the right and the wipers on the left, others have it the other way round. They're not all the same! Switching from one to another tends to result in lots of indicating with the wipers until you retrain your muscle memory.
