I have just discovered, by accident, that if you open another tab in your web browser, you can click on the tab and drag it away so that you have a second separate browser open at the same time. I don't mean split screen but like you have opened a separate thing. Did you all know this already?

I know this is a pathetic thing to get excited about but I was literally like this Shock and then giddy with excitement.

AIBU to be be pleased with my discovery?

Cooking veg, once the water has boiled you can turn off the hob. The water stays hot enough to complete the cooking. If short of a hob (eg at Christmas) you can boil water, put it in a wide-mouth thermos, and cook the veg same way in there. You can also cook spaghetti like that in a thermos. Saves tons of electricity.

Another computer one that I don't think anyone has mentioned (but perhaps they're so well known it's not that amazing):

  • Windows symbol + E will open a new file explorer window
  • Windows symbol + D takes you to the desktop
Auridon4life · 01/02/2020 02:35

You can pin a webpage to your phone home screen

somm · 01/02/2020 02:36

Tech tip for people who aren't as tech-savvy as me:

When you press the h button on your keyboard, you get a lower-case h. But what if you want an upper-case h? Easy! Just go to the wikipedia page on horses, copy the upper-case h and paste it into your document. Problem solved 👍

Brilliant :}

“You can get special pouches for cooking toasties in a toaster”

Let’s you cook loads of other things too, I do pasties, veggie sausage rolls, potato scones, potato waffles, veggie burgers, bacon, nuggets...

Wasail thanks for that, my eyesight shocking these days this will come in really handy

For iPhone people a tip I learned off here - to get the temp ° symbol just press and hold zero key and the option appears, slide across and voila! This was bugging me for YEARS!

I read one of these threads before and one woman had only just discovered that the spiky bit in the middle of a cap, on a tube of medicine/cream, was for spiking the foil lid. She never knew that!

(It was not me)
But it really is amazing.

HavenDilemma · 01/02/2020 03:53

@somm Have you never heard of caps lock?!?! Confused

Charley50 · 01/02/2020 04:07

I think Somm was joking?!

Potato peelers are also good for peeling kiwi fruit. 🥝

SirTobyBelch · 01/02/2020 05:27

@HavenDilemma - Have you never read Viz?!?!

GiveHerHellFromUs · 01/02/2020 05:54

@HavenDilemma just tell us you were up feeding a 2 week old baby and we'll forgive you for completely missing the point

I sometimes see the word Elevenerife and don’t get it, yesterday I saw it written next to Tenerife and the penny finally dropped Blush

allegrasmith · 01/02/2020 06:50

Stock cubes can be bashed before opening the foil and can be tipped out so you don't get crumby beefy fingers

But crumbly beef fingers are the best thing about stock cubes. I'd bash chicken ones though

I empty my purse daily of 1p & 2p coins and saved over £100 last year

If using the self checkout I'll empty my purse of all copper and 10/5p then pay the balance with my card.

allegrasmith · 01/02/2020 06:57

You can cook beans in a tin in the Aga.

I thought it cool to learn that the raw beans are cooked in the sealed tin at the factory. That Greg Wallace show is great

cushioncovers · 01/02/2020 07:13

I had been driving for 26 years before I realised that you can flip your rear view mirror up to avoid the glare of car lights behind you. Enabling you to still see traffic behind you without being blinded.

Pajamagirl · 01/02/2020 07:15

@Wasail
Loving the magnifier tip
Mainly because it means I will no longer have to put up with dp moaning when he forgets his reading glasses at the restaurant
( ahem I may use it occasionally too )

Elouera · 01/02/2020 07:19

On a car where the petrol indicator is (how much fuel is left), there is often a tiny picture of a petrol pump with an arrow, either pointing left or right. This arrow refers to which side of the car the petrol door opens on!!! Very handy if driving a hire car/new car.

Does this work for all letters you may wish to put in capitals? Is there a list of the correct Wikipedia pages anywhere? Confused Grin

Wasail · 01/02/2020 07:39

Potato peelers also work on butternut squash

sdb1hcs · 01/02/2020 07:40

If you are having computer issues alt f4 usually makes them go away.

stargazer2030 · 01/02/2020 07:48

Am loving this thread for the computer tips. Will be trying these today. I only learnt about the sun visor a few years ago.

HPandTheNeverEndingBedtime · 01/02/2020 07:55

Sheets come in depth sizes as well as single, double, super king etc. Only found out last week and have spent the last 10yrs with my fitted sheet pinging off my mattress every night.

Absolutepowercorrupts · 01/02/2020 07:55

@Wasail
Thanks for the magnifier tip.
That's brilliant

CharmingB · 01/02/2020 08:03

If you're typing one handed on an iPhone you can squish the keyboard over to one side to make it easier to type. Just press and hold the globe icon and it'll give you the option to choose which side of the screen you want it.

Surely a potato peeler is just called a speed peeler...so it peels anything that needs peeled..? No? Have I just created a hack?
