Thank god we are only a few hours away from being a free and independent and a global outlooking country! Happy VEU day everyone!!
Let's all join together, enjoy and celebrate our victory over antidemocracy and enjoy our new found and hard fought freedom!!

So what does "pulling together" involve in this context?

AlexaShutUp · 01/02/2020 00:31

Who is wishing it to fail, whizbang? I'm not, I'd love to be proved wrong, but I think it's highly unlikely.

I accept the democratic verdict of the referendum, but that doesn't stop me from feeling that we have made a massive mistake. And yes, I am sad and bitter about it, I make no apology for that.

As for pulling together to "make the best of it", what does that actually mean in practice? I am certainly not planning to try and sabotage anything but equally, I don't see what I can do to make it work. I don't have a vision as to how it can work, and nobody has yet articulated a vision that makes any sense to me. I can't see how it's going to help anyone if I suddenly start pretending that everything is going to be fine.

I presume the Brexiteers do have a vision as to how they can make it a success. They now need to get on with delivering that vision. If they want me to buy into that vision and contribute to making it a reality, they first need to articulate what it actually looks like. I still haven't seen any leave voters who are able to outline the tangible benefits that they are expecting now we have left.

SilverySurfer: Happy Exit Day - I'm so excited, it's been too long a wait but here we are. Hope everyone is stocked up with champagne.

. . . And medication for when the medication shortages start?

KidLorneRoll · 01/02/2020 00:32

Democracy is not jumping off a fucking cliff because a few rich cunts decided it was a good idea.

You twats telling us to pull together can just fuck off. One day, we are going to have to explain why we did this to the kids who have been fucked over, so how about you start coming up with 1 fucking reason to give them.

Mintjulia · 01/02/2020 00:41

Both sides were boring in the end, neither would listen or compromise. Just intent on doing as much damage as possible. Very cynical about the motivations of politicians here and in Europe.
It is up to ordinary people to heal the divisions now.

Walkingdeadfangirl · 01/02/2020 01:01

Happy Brexit day all, its the dawn of a bright new era.

Oulu · 01/02/2020 01:08

So do tell us exactly what is going to make it a bright new era, @Walkingdeadfangirl? How are we better off being subject to EU rules but with no influence on what those rules are?

SevenStones · 01/02/2020 03:16

A democracy?! When, if this had been a binding referendum, it would have been declared null and void because of the corrupt way the result was obtained and the illegalities. But because it was an advisory referendum, politicians are determined we have to enact it! That democracy????

The democracy where 44% of the vote gives you a majority where you're free to do as you like. That democracy?

The democracy where, if you lose your seat as an MP, you just get one for life in the Lords? That democracy?

We no more live in a democracy than we live on the moon. And our set up not being as bad as some other countries doesn't make it good.

Longwhiskers14 · 01/02/2020 06:44

Whizbang As a heartbroken remainer, I don't want it to fail, I sincerely hope I'm proved wrong, because the alternative will be awful and drive millions more into poverty. But saying everyone needs to pull together to make the best of it is wishful thinking. I've never felt more at odds with what my country now stands for and I can't see that changing.

bellinisurge · 01/02/2020 06:48

Come back to us on 31 December 2020. Or rather, don't bother.

Longwhiskers14 · 01/02/2020 06:49

Plus the Torygraph is reporting that at the stroke of 11am, the EU handed us a bill for £1billion, saying it's what we owe due to an increases in gross national income and VAT receipts. Last year's bill was £1million. All concessions have gone now we've left.

How many NHS nurses could that billion have funded?

Longwhiskers14 · 01/02/2020 06:50

Come back to us on 31 December 2020. Or rather, don't bother.

I'll be very interested to see if everyone's as happy we've left a year down the line once reality's kicked in.

2010Aussie · 01/02/2020 06:52

As some locals let off fireworks at 11pm last night, I stood on my front lawn shouting "I hope that you bastards are happy with what you have done" I felt much better after that.

DappledThings · 01/02/2020 07:14

Yes, this.

bellinisurge · 01/02/2020 07:15

I live in a hardcore leave area. A solid northern Labour voting area that only still has a Labour mp because the Brexit Party split the vote.
Two pathetic fireworks. That's it.

Bamboo15 · 01/02/2020 07:33

Appreciate the sentiments of those suggesting we pull together but my partner is on course to loose his job because of Brexit closures, so I assume it’s those whose livelihoods are not directly at risk that are saying let’s make the best of it, you’re welcome to swap your partners job for my partners unemployment and put a chirpy spin on it, same goes for those who voted to leave. I hope you’ll all opt for Brexit job losses first given you’re so confident we have loads of great deals in the pipeline that will make up for the manufacturing unemployment we are loosing from the car industry.

TeddyIsaHe · 01/02/2020 07:35

I feel so despondent. Already there’s news reports of racist abuse overnight. I feel like we’ve fucked it.

Frownette · 01/02/2020 07:36

That's really stunning @MaxNormal

smemorata · 01/02/2020 07:57

"I truly believe that 52% of the population should not get to dictate to the other half of the country"

Every single election this happens. Consider moving to North Korea?

How arrogant can you get thinking that every country except N Korea has the same shitty system we have? Most democratic countries recognize that a simple majority doesn't work for a referendum, especially one with a deceptively simple question where voters can't understand the implications. Most democratic countries don't allow voters to remove rights from fellow citizens who are denied a vote - precisely because it is not democratic.

WiseUpJanetWeiss · 01/02/2020 08:33

Shame on all those wishing for the U.K. to fail just so they can say told you so. Sad and bitter individuals. How about we all pull together to make the best of it. (I appreciate the very idea will be anathema to some commenting here)

@whizbang

Why are you saying this? Do you really not understand that fear of negative consequences Is not the same as hoping for negative consequences?

And how shall we “pull together”? What should we do?

The irony is that, by and large, remainers will be the ones working hard to mitigate the forthcoming medicines shortages and all the other shit that Brexit will deliver.

MinisterforCheekyFuckery · 01/02/2020 09:05

How about we all pull together to make the best of it.

What does that mean though? What does "pulling together" and "making the best of" this particular situation actually entail? I genuinely want to know!

Single2catsand1daughter · 01/02/2020 09:11

You are suffering from Premature Celebration. We left without a deal. Me thinks, your French Champagne will be flat come January 2021.

YouTheCat · 01/02/2020 09:12

22 pages and not one cohesive comment on why leaving will be good for the UK. Says it all really.

BonnesVacances · 01/02/2020 09:12

I think pulling together means trying to mend bridges, be magnanimous towards those who voted to leave. Maybe we're expected to be the bigger people while those without an ounce of sensitivity gloat and continue to rub our faces in the fact that "we lost and should get over it".

WeSavedSallySally · 01/02/2020 09:17

What a glorious day op.

Shame about the coverage on TV. But getting clips through of parliament Square. I wish I had gone. Momentous occasion.

I can hardly believe it.

I feel a deep sense of relief.
