Yes @Clavinova, and I cannot understand for the life of me why those who voted leave in NI did so, and have the same opinion of them as I do for Leave voters elsewhere in the UK. Though then again, we have the DUP as a majority party here and I can't for the life of me understand why; no doubt there is a large crossover between both sets of voters.

The "little Englanders" comment however referred to the gloating I see on here, on Twitter etc, which does in the main give the impression of a very insular mindset from English leave voters.

Havanananana · 31/01/2020 16:09

Anyway, enough of the insults and bitterness.

I too want to move forward - so in the spirit of conciliation, I invite the Brexit supporters on here to set out what they expect to happen in the next 4 months (Johnson only has until July to negotiate a deal with the EU) and what will happen after 31st December.

  • What terms will the UK be trading under - with the EU, US and all of the other countries covered by the 750 Agreements that go into the shredder tonight?
  • How will we know when things have got better?
  • What tangible changes will we see in the UK, and when will these become visible?
  • Now that we've taken back control, who exactly is in control and who is holding them to account?
  • What are the issues that might prevent the UK from achieving its goals, how likely are these to happen and who is in charge of mitigating these risks?
  • What is Plan B, and Plan C, if the Brexit aspirations prove to be difficult or even impossible to achieve?

Tomorrow the Brexit supporters will wake up with their new found freedoms. Tell us what happens next - you won, so get on with it.

We will no longer be dictated to by unelected and unaccountable beaurocrats.

What do you think the European Parliament elections last year were about, then?

Partyforone · 31/01/2020 16:17

Given Im now a thick rascist on benefits, I have been able to watch the markets and make some money from them, already up and its looking like me and mine will come out of this smelling of money :-)

Why not take advantage of the market conditions? Lots of good advice from a leaver with 1:1 economics who works in finance in the city. I hope every other thick person has had the foresight to feather their own nest too.

malylis · 31/01/2020 16:27

No such thing as a 1:1 , just a 1st.

ghostyslovesheets · 31/01/2020 16:33

Haha 1:1 - brilliant 😂

A 1:1!!!! Cracker GrinGrin

Well, woop-de-fucking-doo for you and yours then! All the posters on this thread who've expressed bewilderment as to why some remainers are so "bitter", here you have it! Is this Leave voter responding to a thread where lots of posters have expressed concerns about job losses, increasing food prices pushing struggling families into poverty and an erosion of workers rights by cheerfully gloating about "smelling of money" (really classy, by the way) explanation enough for you?

MinisterforCheekyFuckery · 31/01/2020 16:47

Congratulations on your 1:1 though Grin

ListeningQuietly · 31/01/2020 16:48

I hope that all those who are pleased about leaving the EU
are just as pleased in a year's time when the true position becomes clearer

PortiaCastis · 31/01/2020 16:50

Grin @ 1:1

Self praise is no recommendation!

ghostyslovesheets · 31/01/2020 16:54

@ministerforcheekyfuckery when that person boasts of having a 1:1 I’d take everything else with a truck load of salt 😂

BonnesVacances · 31/01/2020 16:54

I'm genuinely interested in what SueEllen's DH's reasons are for campaigning to leave the EU, if this is something he was involved in before the bandwagon jumpers. It does suggest a higher level of engagement and understanding of what the issues are and I'm hopeful of finding one or two reasons to help me feel a bit better about Brexit.

Mordred · 31/01/2020 16:56

"We will no longer be dictated to by unelected and unaccountable beaurocrats"

Oh you will. Our own beaurocrats (sic) aren't elected either. And they work in exactly the same way as the EU ones regarding laws and policy making.

Well aren't you a peach.

I kept re-Reading this paragraph repeatedly trying to understand the 1:1 bit aaannnddd I now understand thanks to the helpful posters above.

I can't believe anyone who claims to be friends with an economics grad didn't know it's called a 1st but thanks for making me laugh though Grin

Bibijayne · 31/01/2020 17:00

I'm sad, because today represents the end to lots of opportunities for me and my family. I'm not going to wallow too much, especially as very little will change during transition. But I find the nasty, bragging and ill-graced celebration to be pretty uncaring. Why not just note it's happened and carry on like any other day? This fireworks and party stuff shows a massive lack of empathy for the close to half the country who do not agree with today.

Paintingtheroseswhite · 31/01/2020 17:00

I've never been more ashamed to be British

ListeningQuietly · 31/01/2020 17:02

THe EU has 33,000 unelected Bureaucrats
The UK has 440,000
one of whom is Dominic Cummings

we are only a few hours away from being a free and independent and a global outlooking country!
So we weren't independent before? This will be news to the UK government who have never claimed that we weren't independent. Or could it be that you don't actually know anything about sovreignty?
And what do you mean by global outlooking? The EU has worldwide trade deals. We don't.
I'm a patriot and proud we are getting our country back
Back from where? We were the EU too!
We will no longer be dictated to by unelected and unaccountable beaurocrats
We were never dictated to. Most of what we wanted we got.
We elected MEPs. We have plenty of bureacrats in the UK btw.
We will save billions not paying into the EU
At the last count we have already spent more on Brexit in the last three years than we spent being part of the EU for the last forty. We will not be saving anything and even the Brexiteer MPs gave up claiming we would, quite some time ago in fact.

SueEllenMishke · 31/01/2020 17:20

bonnevacances
As with a lot of well informed voters on both sides his reasons were/are nuanced and multifaceted. There was no 'one' reason.
It's partly sovereignty, partly economics and partly immigration .... but as soon as you say those words people start to shout out words like intolerant and racist. We discussed it at the time and he explained why he was voting leave. I explained my choice and we left it at that. That was over three years ago so I'd do him a disservice if I tried to explain his reasons in detail now.

What I do know is he was well informed and it's something he has been passionate about for decades. People joke about leavers getting their information from the back of a bus but I can honestly say that wasn't the case here. I'm not exaggerating when I say we have dozens and dozens of books on politics ( academic texts not just politically biased publications), he's studied politics and history and continues to do so. He's read pretty much everything going on the subject. He genuinely believes this is the right decision and I respect that.

I wonder how many remain voters were as well informed? I know I certainly wasn't.

Havanananana · 31/01/2020 17:26

The EU has 33,000 unelected bureaucrats. The UK has 440,000.

The UK also has an unelected Upper House who are law-makers rather than just administrators and civil servants.

This includes such recently appointed peers as Lord Goldsmith (Zac Goldsmith) who was voted out by the voters of Richmond (London) at the 2019 GE, but who retained his ministerial position when Johnson gave him a life peerage. Even when the electorate vote them out, it seems that the UK is unable to get rid of certain well-connected politicians.

YouTheCat · 31/01/2020 17:27

We had never lost our sovereignty. There is more immigration from outside of the EU plus it brought in more money than it cost. And Brexit means massive jobs losses long term and so voting for it based on economics is rather shooting yourself in the foot.
