Put a f*cking blanket over your baby

It’s horrible day- freezing light rain that sticks to your & face ice cold wind.

Nevertheless, am I still seeing 6 month old babies being strolled around in the pram wearing nothing but a coat, jeans and socks. No blanket, no raincover. Meanwhile their parents are dawdling by wearing a nice thick coat, a hat and a pair of gloves.

Are these people stupid or lazy? AIBU?

I used to always use tights instead of socks on my son who would never leave them on, or a snow suit with attached gloves so he couldn't pull off the blanket or gloves. The hood stays up on them usually too, so no problems with hat removal.

bluebells100 · 30/01/2020 19:33

I used to put hot water bottles in mine (wrapped up) as well as cosy blankets.

Aragog · 30/01/2020 19:36

But if the child catches pneumonia, it'll be your fucking fault.

Do you know what pneumonia is and how it is transmitted?

StoneofDestiny · 30/01/2020 19:37

Just as bad when you see kids in padded sleep suits and swathed in blankets being pushed round shops/indoor shopping centres while the parent has their coat unbuttoned or hung over handle of the pram.

Think they haven't heard of overheating?

MrsTerryPratchett · 30/01/2020 19:39

I was told hot water bottles and babies are an absolute no.

SnowWhitesRestingBitchFace · 30/01/2020 19:39

I could very well be one of the people you describe. Although my 18 month old does wear shoes! I always have a blanket and rain cover with his but the blanket gets thrown in the floor and the rain cover gets ripped off (by my child obviously!) unless his hands and legs are tied down there honestly isn't anything I can do!

Igglepigglesgrubbyblanket · 30/01/2020 19:39

NOYB

Carouselfish · 30/01/2020 19:41

See it all the time. They have no empathy for their children. Or they're raising them to be Spartan warriors.

lilgreen · 30/01/2020 19:42

See it all the time. Cruel. They’re not walking like their parents so need to have a blanket and rain cover.

lilgreen · 30/01/2020 19:44

Get a cosy toes ! They fit the pram so can’t be kicked off!

LunaHarley · 30/01/2020 19:46

My son had an infection in his toes, I was told by the gp not to put anything restrictive on his feet until healed. So he was in loose socks, blanket and had the raincover on his pram so he didn't get cold. I had two interfering people in one day make patronising comments about how he was dressed; 'doesn't mummy have any shoes for you?' 'Oh you must be so cold in just your socks'. He was perfectly fine but I shouldn't have had to give my childs medical history to strangers because they want to make judgements. If there is a genuine concern or the baby looks distressed maybe have a polite chat with the parent, perhaps they are struggling but don't make them feel like they are doing a shit job at looking after their child.

I’m sure you get them second hand too.

namechangetheworld · 30/01/2020 19:48

I absolutely hate this.

I see a Mum on the school run every morning with her child in a sling. The little girl must be about one and NEVER has socks or shoes on. Pure laziness, and I don't care what anyone says. It's not fucking hard to stick on a pair of tights if she won't keep her socks on.

lilgreen · 30/01/2020 19:49

@luna I’m sure as you had socks and a rain cover your baby was ok for a short time. Equally keeping a baby warm for a short trip out takes priority over the whole child being cold for the sake of a toe being aired. So long as it’s aired at home, in bed etc .Common sense .

Kaykay066 · 30/01/2020 19:52

It was icy rain, wind and really very cold here today, a baby in no snow suit or blanket/rain cover would’ve been really cold. I used to put mine in a warm coat and cozy toes as they were Blanket flingers

DecemberSnow · 30/01/2020 20:03

All in one pram suit...

You can get them 2nd hand too...
Charity shops, Facebook market, Local facebook selling sites....

Then theres no need for extra layers that the child can throw off

DecemberSnow · 30/01/2020 20:03

Tights are an amazing invention.
For boys too... Under trousers

Ravenfeet · 30/01/2020 20:04

If you want a baby to wear a hat but it keeps pulling it off, try one like this - it requires much more dexterity to remove. It also keeps their neck cosy. Where we live, most babies wear something like this in thin Merino wool up to about 10-12 degrees, depending on wind. Thicker versions around freezing and below.

LunaHarley · 30/01/2020 20:05

@lilgreen out of the house for 10 minutes to pop to the shop and have people judging. He had a temperature, was on two different antibiotics and any pressure on his toes caused him to scream. As I said he was plenty warm enough with blankets, thick trousers and a foot less snow suit but because he stuck a foot out which had a thick, albeit loose fitting sock, meant people felt they could make comments. Common sense would be not passing judgment on parents doing their best by their child

10storeylovesong · 30/01/2020 20:05

You'd have a field day with my toddler. Refuses to wear coat, hat, gloves etc. Perpetually hot. If he'd had his way today he'd have been wearing a tshirt. However, I constantly have parents commenting on the fact that I'm not wearing a coat at the school gates when they're all trussed up. It seems we're both warm blooded. Guess we're not all the same - who'd have thought it?!

goodytooshoes · 30/01/2020 20:14

One of my DS's would NEVER keep a blanket, shoes, socks or a rain cover on in the pram. He was a nightmare. From the time he found he could pull it off, he would do just that. He ripped several rain covers. I used to get judgemental looks of people like you. You don't know how many times that parent has put the kids shoes on and blanket on for the child to kick them off. I couldn't take 5 steps without him doing it all over again.

My other DS was a little darling though, he even kept hats on!

No two children are alike. If you have an angel that sits there and doesn't move, good on you. Some of us have little shits that make us look stupid and lazy.

goodytooshoes · 30/01/2020 20:15

The same child is now 15, wears shorts in the winter and refuses to wear a coat to school.

TheWildWoods · 30/01/2020 20:19

Put the child who hates having their feet covered in a pram suit and have them scream the entire time till they fall asleep so I can get judged over that instead?

C8H10N4O2 · 30/01/2020 20:24

But the OP didn’t say anything Evilspiritgin. Didn’t do anything useful or constructive. Just slagged the woman off on here

Yes exactly. If you see a child in distress then do something at the time, don't purse your lips and make holier than thou posts where it does nothing to help a child.

That said, by six months all mine were entirely capable of being very vocal on their own account when too hot or too cold. Three of them were also terrible blanket kickers.

Somehow they all survived with remarkably little illness and become healthy adults. Perhaps the extra fresh air did them good.

Notajogger · 30/01/2020 20:26

Around my way, the kids are always trussed up like little overheatiing arctic explorers.
This. So many sweaty kids left in this kind of thing indoors when their parents have stripped off.
