Put a f*cking blanket over your baby

It’s horrible day- freezing light rain that sticks to your & face ice cold wind.

Nevertheless, am I still seeing 6 month old babies being strolled around in the pram wearing nothing but a coat, jeans and socks. No blanket, no raincover. Meanwhile their parents are dawdling by wearing a nice thick coat, a hat and a pair of gloves.

Are these people stupid or lazy? AIBU?

Um... won’t the baby cry if it’s too cold? Mine always did (as well as for everything else).

If the baby isn’t crying I’d assume they are ok with the temperature.

PumpkinP · 30/01/2020 18:26

Show me a baby or toddler who can undo a zipped cosy toes with a velcro top fastener and I'll show you a genius

Well mine actually broke the zip of hers 🤷‍♀️

Letsallscreamatthesistene · 30/01/2020 18:27

I dont doubt she's nice. As are all the other threads like this atm written by well meaning people.

My point in this one is, if the baby was in clear distress (she mentions in one of her updates that the babies lips were blue) she should have done something there and then, rather than come home and write a post about it on MN.

MamaFlintstone · 30/01/2020 18:28

I’m more pissed off when I see a baby in a padded pram suit, under a load of blankets, in a pram, in boiling hot shops. That’s actually dangerous and is a much more appropriate place to direct your ire.

cavabiensepasser · 30/01/2020 18:34

YANBU.

To all of you numpties getting your knickers in a twist over, well, a perfectly reasonable suggestion:

Put a fucking blanket on your kids.

... Or not. But if the child catches pneumonia, it'll be your fucking fault.

hibiscuswater · 30/01/2020 18:40

Are these people stupid or lazy?

No idea but I do know that you are very rude.

onionface · 30/01/2020 18:40

But if the child catches pneumonia, it'll be your fucking fault.

Yes, for taking the child out in public where viruses and bacteria spread, and may cause secondary problems such as pneumonia. Best keep all kids at home, then.

Pneumonia isn't caused by being cold, ffs.

Urkiddingright · 30/01/2020 18:46

But if the child catches pneumonia

Pneumonia has nothing to do with body temperature.

DecemberSnow · 30/01/2020 18:47

I agrre OP... 100%

Put the baby in a all in one coat, over its clothes.
Not difficult. No blanket needed (If they throw it off themselves)

MamaFlintstone · 30/01/2020 18:48

But if the child catches pneumonia, it'll be your fucking fault.

That’s not how any of this works...

WorraLiberty · 30/01/2020 18:49

Oh dear God. Please don't tell us you think kids catch pneumonia because mum or dad didn't pop a blanket on them?

SwansGlide · 30/01/2020 18:49

According to some posters here then there's no such thing as a parent too thoughtless or lazy to wrap their child up warmly enough. Obviously every inadequately dressed or covered child or baby doesn't want to be wrapped up (just like their own child) and anyone thinking otherwise is just judgey... Hmm

SwansGlide · 30/01/2020 18:52

^^ posted too soon.

Basically just because someone's child (with a caring parent) doesn't like being wrapped up or resists hats etc, it's not necessarily the same situation for all the children not wrapped up out there. Just a thought.

GrumpyHoonMain · 30/01/2020 18:53

To these all the parents allowing their kids to go barefoot in winter because it’s easier - would you also let them dictate healthcare / vaccinations / bed times? If not why not?

TinklyLittleLaugh · 30/01/2020 18:56

Being cold massively lowers your immune system and leaves you more open to infections. That’s why in Victorian novels people are always at death’s door after being getting caught in the rain.

Firecarrier · 30/01/2020 18:58

Good point swansglide

Some people are too thick or unfeeling to consider that the bald baby they're pushing around in a pram is unlikely to be as warm as they are seeing that he/she is stationary.

Of course, babies differ, I had a niece with severe eczema who needed to be kept cool to help prevent itching but I've seen these threads previously and it always seems that there is hordes of MNers babies who simply won't tolerate any sort of clothes or blankets.

Often though, yes, it is neglect to put it bluntly.

Because those things actually matter.

DD expresses discomfort at being hot, not cold and always has. She also has sensory issues that explain the extreme distress she always showed at being forced into clothes she hated.

She's happy paddling in the sea in Canada in December. But a label in the wrong place? Armageddon.

Fucking excellent use of this meme and made me laugh out loud. Classic.

Noti23 · 30/01/2020 19:08

Ive already said that I regret not saying something. I’m quite an anxious person and it would take a lot for me to feel the need to intervene. By the time I was sure that the baby was shivering and it wasn’t just me seeing things and then trying to think of something to say her bus had arrived anyway. I wasn’t going to say anything nasty but just alert her. I don’t care what pp say about their own babies- there was something wrong in this situation. She was stood there cursing to her friend about the cold while her baby had blue lips. I posted this while I was sat on the bus feeling angry with myself and her.

You probably would have thought my baby was cold too... I had him in a sling so a bit different, it looks like he's wearing just trousers and socks but really he has 2 pairs of fleecy trousers and socks over knitted booties. Although he had a blanket too.

crispysausagerolls · 30/01/2020 19:12

God OP that must have been awful to see!

Autumnsloth · 30/01/2020 19:12

Kuztbsau your update - yeah that sounds bad.

ClientQueen · 30/01/2020 19:13

Obviously I'm not a baby now Grin but as a child I always had blue tinged lips, and still do as an adult
I was outside today, no coat and my manager said "are you cold?" And I was "er no, why?"
Him "you're blue"
Yes, yes I am! I'm so pale I turn that colour v easily and my legs go that mottled red blue shade. But I also am allergic to heat so I v v rarely wear a coat, even as a child. I had hives this morning after 4 antihistamines and it was about 8c

Zoecarter · 30/01/2020 19:15

My son will take his hat gloves socks off throw his blanket on the floor and I feel like a horrible mum. Especially when rude people comment on it. I try to keep him wrapped up but he won’t have it. I carry all his thing behind him whilst pushing the pram. thanks for being judgemental and making me feel like a shit mum tho

MrsTerryPratchett · 30/01/2020 19:21

The baby was clearly over six months because small babies don't shiver and this one was according to your update.
