I want to change to be known as Ms. When looking on google about how to do that I came across a mn thread where there was some debate over pronunciation. Now I'm genuinely unsure...but obviously have to make a "Statement" for you to agree/disagree with to get a vote! Grin

I've heard Ms being mis mizz and miss being well...miss. but thread seemed to suggest that was nonsense and both should be miss.

So yanbu is they are pronounced differently
Yabu is they are the same.

It's Mzzzz

MsVestibule · 29/01/2020 22:05

Miss = well, miss
Ms = mizz, rhymes with fizz

That's my understanding, anyway!

TheincredibleBookEatingManchot · 29/01/2020 22:05

I've always heard and pronounced Ms as muhz.

NameChangeNugget · 29/01/2020 22:11

Only an absolute Benny would say miss

halcyondays · 29/01/2020 22:18

Ms = Mizz, like the magazine was called.

Saralyn · 29/01/2020 22:18

I lived in England for three years, used Ms if I was required to fill in a title in a form, but never quite figured out how to pronounce it...

In my defense we don't really have the z-sound in my language, so I'm not very good at it, and also we stopped using titles 40 years ago here.

Jellykat · 29/01/2020 22:20

Ms is defo Mizz

ChelseaGirly · 29/01/2020 22:20

It's mzzz

1066vegan · 29/01/2020 22:20

I've always pronounced "Ms" as Mizz.

Blueuggboots · 29/01/2020 22:21

It's pronounced Muzzzz like buzz
It's meant to sound neither like Mrs or Miss but somewhere in between.,

RubyandMax · 29/01/2020 22:21

I've always been a Ms, and would pronounce it Mzz if it came up, but I absolutely don't care about it being said Miss either.

ShirleyPhallus · 29/01/2020 22:22

Ms doesn’t rhyme with fizz! There is no i!

Pemba · 29/01/2020 22:22

Miz

cuckooken · 29/01/2020 22:23

Ms rhymes with Jizz minus the i

Pemba · 29/01/2020 22:24

So by your logic Shirley Mr should be pronounced mrrr

MitziK · 29/01/2020 22:24

It should be Mz.

But if you work in a school;

Miss = Miss
Ms = Miss
Mrs = Miss

After a while 20 minutes , it's really not worth worrying about anymore.

SayNoToCarrots · 29/01/2020 22:24

It depends. If you are a female teacher it doesn't matter if it is spelled 'Dr', it's still pronounced 'Miss'.

Smileyaxolotl1 · 29/01/2020 22:24

It’s definitely muzz

Nofoolfornoone · 29/01/2020 22:25

I use ms and pronounce is mzzz.
I’ve noticed when askinf for your title 99% of people say are you miss or mrs? And then I feel pretentious saying ms.
But I prefer it as it doesn’t give away my marital status - like mr for a man. I don’t see why women should have their marital status in neon letters when men don’t.

SayNoToCarrots · 29/01/2020 22:25

😂 Mitzik, snap

BeNiceToYourSister · 29/01/2020 22:26

Mizz, like the 90s mag!

Waveysnail · 29/01/2020 22:27

Reminds me of my secondary English teacher who made a huge deal about pronunciation mzzzzzzz not miss. 10 minute lecture of on to pronounce it. We were like Hmm as 12 years olds so do not care.

BlueHarry · 29/01/2020 22:27

I've never been sure if it's miz or muz. I wouldn't say "mizz" (to be that has more focused on the zzzz sound). It's like a shorter z sound in my head. I only think "muz" because I had a teacher who said she was Ms (muz) teacher.

BecauseReasons · 29/01/2020 22:28

So by your logic Shirley Mr should be pronounced mrrr

I think Mr is an abbreviated form of 'Mister' so that's how you say it. Same with 'Dr'- it's the first and last letters of doctor.

Supertrooper98 · 29/01/2020 22:28

It's definitely Mizz and to the poster who said it can't be because there is no i, by your crazy logic how on earth do you pronounce Mrs!
