I want to change to be known as Ms. When looking on google about how to do that I came across a mn thread where there was some debate over pronunciation. Now I'm genuinely unsure...but obviously have to make a "Statement" for you to agree/disagree with to get a vote! Grin

I've heard Ms being mis mizz and miss being well...miss. but thread seemed to suggest that was nonsense and both should be miss.

So yanbu is they are pronounced differently
Yabu is they are the same.

Have no idea - and work in a school so am generally referred to as Miss by the pupils. However (and although I am a Mrs) I never use Mrs, Miss or Ms unless I can absolutely not avoid it - and have had many an argument about it over the years. I use my name without any prefix. Just like a man does.

"I can remember when Ms was introduced. It was pronounced Mizz, ie somewhere between miss and missiz. It only started to be pronounced as Mzzz later, when people forgot or didn't know its origins."

Not round me it wasnt. Always pronounced Muzz.

TabbyMumz · 30/01/2020 17:56

I didnt like it either really. It started off being the title divorced women used because they were no longer Mrs or Miss (which denotes a young unmarried person) then it started to be used by people who didnt know if you were Miss or Mrs.

geekone · 30/01/2020 17:57

Mzzzz

FabbyChix · 30/01/2020 17:57

I’m a ms . I correct anyone that calls me miss. It is mzzzzzz

redwoodmazza · 30/01/2020 17:59

I've always thought Ms was pronounced 'Muzz'.

WeHaveSnowdrops · 30/01/2020 18:00

I've been "Muzz" since the 60s. :)

Buttons4me · 30/01/2020 18:02

I'm Ms and say it as Mzzz but the amount of times I get referred as Miss is a lot people seem to hear me as saying Miss even though I'm saying Mzzz.

Instagrrr · 30/01/2020 18:03

Its Master for single men, like Miss for women

It's Master for boys. Not grown men.

florascotia2 · 30/01/2020 19:43

For everyone interested in the history of Ms, Miss, Mrs (and also 'Mr' which originally = Master)

0ttilie · 30/01/2020 19:57

It's pronounced differently in American English and British English.

thecatneuterer · 30/01/2020 20:02

It's Muzz

Brahumbug · 31/01/2020 08:47

Mrs or miss didn't come from "mistress of". They are reflected the time when couples were master and mistress .

puds11 · 31/01/2020 08:49

Mzzz

OwlDoll · 31/01/2020 09:31

OP, there are no rules about using a title like Miss or Mrs. The next time you have to fill in a form just tick Ms. Nobody is going to report you for using the wrong title.

Urkiddingright · 31/01/2020 10:13

It’s Mz. I’m married but I kept my maiden name so go by Ms maiden name. I was always Ms before I got married too.

FramboiseRoyale · 31/01/2020 22:48

Not all women called Mistress were married. It was a title that indicated status in society. So a single woman who owned property, for example, would be "mistress." It's connotation with marriage came later.

tiedy · 01/02/2020 06:14

Muhz not mizz!

StarlightLady · 01/02/2020 06:30

Of course it’s Pronounced Mz! I use Ms, it’s a great idea but unfortunately in English difficult to say.

I think we missed an opportunity here and should have adopted the word “Female” instead. Longer? Maybe, but still shorter to say than the French mademoiselle.

flowery · 01/02/2020 06:42

I don’t think I’ve ever heard it with an i inserted in it. I’ve certainly never heard it with a u. I pronounce it Mzz

ThriftyMcThrifty · 01/02/2020 06:47

I’ve always pronounced it muzz and i am in California, for the previous poster who said it was always mizz in the us.
