To think Ms isn't pronounced the same as Miss?

I want to change to be known as Ms. When looking on google about how to do that I came across a mn thread where there was some debate over pronunciation. Now I'm genuinely unsure...but obviously have to make a "Statement" for you to agree/disagree with to get a vote! Grin

I've heard Ms being mis mizz and miss being well...miss. but thread seemed to suggest that was nonsense and both should be miss.

So yanbu is they are pronounced differently
Yabu is they are the same.

It’s Mizz!

Americans, you use it all the time, how do you say it?

MyNewBearTotoro · 29/01/2020 22:29

I’d say Mzzzz without much of a vowel sounds between the m and the zzz, I guess it could possibly be an i or u in there but it’s too quick to really hear.

greenlobster · 29/01/2020 22:29

Mzzz

The pronunciation is the easy bit though. If you've got a child then good luck getting anyone to use it! Being called Mrs drives me nuts. Even people who are well aware that I'm single default to Mrs 9 times out of 10.

NecklessMumster · 29/01/2020 22:30

I say Mizz, I've had to state it twice this week when asked 'are you miss or mrs' thought we were past this now,

123Dancewithme · 29/01/2020 22:30

I’ve always pronounced it “mizz”, I haven’t heard “muzz” before!

BecauseReasons · 29/01/2020 22:30

It's definitely Mizz and to the poster who said it can't be because there is no i, by your crazy logic how on earth do you pronounce Mrs!

Mrs is short for Mistress, but over time has lost the 'str'.

IHadADreamWhichWasNotAllADream · 29/01/2020 22:31

I only ever end up using it over the phone when some random admin functionary asks “is that Mrs or Miss?”. Obviously saying “no it’s Ms

BecauseReasons · 29/01/2020 22:34

Americans, you use it all the time, how do you say it?

Does it matter? Americans pronounce lots of things differently- see 'aluminium'.

SayNoToCarrots · 29/01/2020 22:34

Mrs is short for Mistress, but over time has lost the 'str'.
Ms, Miss and Mrs are all short for Mistress.

BecauseReasons · 29/01/2020 22:36

Ms, Miss and Mrs are all short for Mistress.

Yes, and?

MereDintofPandiculation · 29/01/2020 22:37

Ms, Miss and Mrs are all short for Mistress. Ms is a made-up term. It's not short for anything.

MsJuniper · 29/01/2020 22:39

I use Ms and have over time moved from saying Muhz to Mizz but with a shorter i than you'd get in Miss, so almost Mzz. As I now work in a school and seem to be the only Ms I usually get called Miss anyway.

MCBerberLoop · 29/01/2020 22:41

Don’t they spell aluminium as aluminum, so they are pronouncing it as presumably we would, had we not the extra i?

Anyway, yes, I think it’s interesting to know how a culture that uses it widely pronounces it. Everywhere I have been seems to say mizz, so I am interested to see if someone from there comes on and says that actually they do say muzz or mzzzz.

Greenwingmemories · 29/01/2020 22:42

I always say Muzz

BrokenWing · 29/01/2020 22:43

Unless you are a teacher then you'll rarely be called Ms.

Correcting as adult that said Miss would be rude and petty.

If you are a teacher I'm sure you've got more important things to do than correct children on how to pronounce your title.

LoseLooseLucy · 29/01/2020 22:46

Mzzz, not miss or mizz.

SayNoToCarrots · 29/01/2020 22:47

Yes, and?

And so that tells you little about the pronunciation.

Ms is a made-up term. It's not short for anything. A, everything is a made-up term. B, it is actually short for mistress, and has been since the 1600s.

Chienloup · 29/01/2020 22:48

Mzzz/ Muzzz. Definitely not Miss or Mizz.

Pronounciation/language guides on YouTube all saying mizz.

SpruceTree · 29/01/2020 22:54

Ms is pronounced muzz round where I live.

Smidge001 · 29/01/2020 22:57

Muhz or mzzzz definitely not mizz

DappledThings · 29/01/2020 22:58

I say Mzz. If I heard Mizz I would think that was Miss bit with a regional variation that made Ss sound like Zs. Mzz doesn't really sound like any other word I can think of to give an example.

angelikacpickles · 29/01/2020 22:58

It's pronounced Mizz! Not Mz or muzz.

DesLynamsMoustache · 29/01/2020 23:06

Mizz with a short I. Never heard muzz! To rhyme with fuzz?!
