All parties need to get a grip; appalling behaviour from Farage; but there's no need to descend to that level.

PickUpThePieces · 29/01/2020 19:14

The SNP is great at this kind of big statement, moral high ground, tactic.

Personally, I’d be grateful if Nicola Sturgeon could find time to swing by her constituency and do something about the levels of child poverty, for example.
That’s if she’s not too busy running flags up flag poles.

I’d be grateful if Boris Johnson could find time to swing by anywhere in the country and do something about the levels of child poverty, for example. He is too busy running around doing sound bites about 'getting Brexit done'

Go Scotland - go and not be part of the UK any more but of Europe, and then I shall move north and join you. Keep fighting!

Dreamersandwishers · 29/01/2020 19:27

FFS Nicola, get on with the job we pay you for. Scottish children go hungry; cold & have a crap education these days - my mother was proud to teach in Scotland. Lucky she’s not here to see it. Her cousin was proud to be a GP - ditto...
As a pp said, the SNP are great at a grand gesture, but as one who lives here ( and pays their bloody Xs tax) , they are fur coat, no drawers.

ThroughTheRoses · 29/01/2020 19:28

I think the SNP needs to spend more time governing Scotland properly and less time fannying about with flags, writing signs in Gaelic, and generally blaming Westminster for everything.

Saying that it is undemocratic that Scotland is leaving Europe is utter nonsense. We voted as one country (the UK) and a reasonable number of Scots voted Leave (around 30-35% if I remember correctly).

I have never, and will never vote SNP, and yet have had to put up with them in power for over a decade. In fact at the last general election they only got 45% of the vote share.

Scotland leaving the UK and rejoining Europe would be no simple process either. As Scotland is currently running with an 8% deficit (SNP's own figures), it wouldn't even be allowed back in the door.

ssd · 29/01/2020 19:31

We're Scottish. Live in a 3 bed house less than 200k. 20 minutes walk to the 3rd top secondary state school in Scotland. 20 minutes drives to Glasgow. 20 minutes to the coast and beautiful countryside. Free prescriptions (which I don't agree with. I'd pay). 35 minute bus journey to top unis also the mn pinnacle, Russell group uni. Kids got brilliant education.

Absolutely brilliant!

Puzzledandpissedoff · 29/01/2020 19:50

As Scotland is currently running with an 8% deficit (SNP's own figures), it wouldn't even be allowed back in the (EU) door

It's actually even worse than that, TheRoses, since the Finance Secretary says that Scotland would refuse to pay their share of UK debt following independence ... so they'd start their brave new dawn as defaulters and yet still expect to be welcomed with open arms

And no doubt that would all be Westminster's fault too Sad

BMW6 · 29/01/2020 19:56

Okay

Snoopdogsbitch · 29/01/2020 19:58

I like it as a symbol of solidarity with the EU , but it'll make no difference. I'm a remainer who wants independence, but not with oor Nicola in power, with a labour government that might fix child poverty, abandon universal credit and bring our once great education system back.

Dreamersandwishers · 29/01/2020 20:01

Ok Snoopdog, you are talking some sense. I could vote for you

Leo90 · 29/01/2020 20:12

It also a lot of rubbish that Scotland voted overwhelmingly to stay in the EU when almost as many didn't bother to vote in the referendum.

MorrisZapp · 29/01/2020 20:13

How would an independent Scotland back in the EU work? We have open borders with countries over the sea but a hard border with our immediate neighbours?

Shenanagins · 29/01/2020 20:33

It seems a great use of parliamentary time debating such a gesture rather than the debacle of the Edinburgh sick kids hospital and the tragic deaths of children at the new Glasgow one.

Nyx · 29/01/2020 20:38

I'm proud of our Scottish Parliament for making this decision - yay!

KenzoBaby · 29/01/2020 20:43

I'm pro-Brexit and pro-UK so against Scottish independence.

I'm ashamed to be Scottish actually. Bampot Nicola does not speak for me. Wish I was English!

I'd be allowed to fly a Scottish flag or an EU flag in my garden. But not the Union Jack cos that would make me racist, innit. Go figure.

Amanduh · 29/01/2020 20:46

It’s the stupidest thing - just makes them look a bit thick? Then again, great thing to concentrate on as the country runs in to the ground as this week they drop down to the level of Slovenia on one of the sharpest ever falls in wellbeing this week, OECD report is hideous, as they suffer with income, education, longevity and inclusivity.. l but at least they’ve got an EU flag to be proud about... 😂

Wheresthebiffer2 · 29/01/2020 20:51

I wish they'd spent the time debating something relevant - rather than a FLAG.

The UK is leaving the EU, and as part of that United Kingdom, Scotland is leaving too. Yes, Proportional Representation means that the vote was skewed, but it's the current system, and under those electoral rules, the UK as a whole kingdom voted to LEAVE.

I'd rather the Scottish Gov got on with governing, instead of bothering about flag waving.

kelpie35 · 29/01/2020 20:53

I am proud to be Scottish.

I do not support the SNP and would never vote to leave the UK

Grafittiqueen · 29/01/2020 20:57

I voted remain and am gutted to be leaving the EU and I think it's an absolute embarrassment that they debated the flying of a fucking flag in Holyrood. The SNP's failures are piling up. Why are they not debating the mess that's been made of education?!

Could you imagine the outrage if it had been a yes vote and some wanted to keep flying the Union Jack at holyrood post leaving the UK?!

dementedma · 29/01/2020 21:05

Be better if they stopped arsing about with flags and PR stunts and addressed the current failings in the education system and their own failure to meet all set education targets.

Darkbendis · 29/01/2020 21:07

ssd , we are probably neighbours Wink

Proud of the Scottish Parliament making this decision too!
