To think you eat the skin of a kiwi?!

Was going to put this in chat but thought I’d opt for the voting to get a clearer picture!
Dds and I eat the skin of the kiwi fruit. Dh and ds think we are weird. It’s much quicker, I’m sure it’s really nutritious and there’s less waste (okay, actually I just started eating the skin when I realised I was too lazy to bother peeling them).
I put it to you, good people of MN, AW(we)BU?

I voted Yabu because I didn't know you could eat it. Like @SunshineCake I'm now wondering at the time I wasted.next time I get a kiwi I'm eating it all!

yellowallpaper · 28/01/2020 10:05

Hairy and I doubt whether you could ever clean it enough to rid it of bacteria. I wash apples etc.

Deadringer · 28/01/2020 10:05

The feel of Kiwi skin gives me the heebie jeebies, I hate touching them, no way could I eat it.

TheChosenTwo · 28/01/2020 10:13

@OptimisticSix I hope we have a convert!

Kiwi's are disgusting both inside and out. Furry skin and weird pippiness inside. Yuck.

chellochello · 28/01/2020 10:39

No no no that is disgusting who would eat furry green skin!

Drabarni · 28/01/2020 10:42

Oh God no, it would be like eating animal fur, yuk.

NearlyGranny · 28/01/2020 10:44

Kiwis are best eaten like boiled eggs; scooped out from the shell/skin.

When travelling in NZ we bought a little, plastic, serrated, runcible-spoon gadget designed for the job. I wish we'd bought a dozen as I've never found one since.

Lucid are great for munching, slurping, slicing and putting in fruit salads or atop cakes as decoration. I discovered their only failing when I added them to my homemade pitted mini yoghurts. There's a reason you can't get kiwi yoghurt. 🤢

NearlyGranny · 28/01/2020 10:45

Autocorrect, hun, you need a little lie-down. Lucid for kiwis? Really?! 😄

PerkingFaintly · 28/01/2020 10:50

Shock I only voted YABU because there was no button for YABVVVVVVU.

Yer a wrong'un, OP.

turnandfacethenamechange · 28/01/2020 10:52

I do when I'm putting in a smoothie

What's wrong with tarantula?

I agree the skin isn't particularly lovely, but then peeling it is a pain in the arse so I usually just eat the whole thing. More fibre. YANBU

bravotango · 28/01/2020 11:10

The skin is delicious - only on golden kiwifruit though. Haven't seen them in the uk. Hairless!

AryaStarkWolf · 28/01/2020 11:11

Nope, cut in half and scoop with a spoon

Fifthtimelucky · 28/01/2020 11:25

I often eat the skin.

I always used to peel and slice (if it was going in a fruit salad) or halve and scoop out with a teaspoon but stopped doing that a couple of years ago when I was having trouble peeling an overripe one and realised that the skin was fine.

If I was putting them for a fruit salad that other people were going to eat I'd still peel them, but if just for me I wouldn't bother.

Urkiddingright · 28/01/2020 11:30

Never even considered it, never known anyone eat it either. Definitely weird, it’s bloody furry.

HoneyBee03 · 28/01/2020 11:32

I always eat the skin! Why wouldn't you? And golden kiwis are better and in most supermarkets now. The skin on those is really smooth and they're scrummy. I suggest to anyone who isn't a kiwi-skin eater but wants to try, to give a golden kiwi a go first Smile

HoneyBee03 · 28/01/2020 11:33

Just seen a PP say that they don't find golden kiwis in the UK, but I've definitely bought them in the big supermarkets. Maybe they're more seasonal?

MarmiteyCrumpets · 28/01/2020 11:34

Yuck, OP! Y A B V V V U!
Do you eat mango and banana peels too?

Going to have a lie down now to recover from this gastronomic unspeakableness.
Am very quietly appalled.

Lweji · 28/01/2020 11:36

I think YABU, but my DS also eats the skin, so I won't vote.

godivaqueen · 28/01/2020 12:18

Wtf have I just read

lucysnowe2 · 28/01/2020 12:42

I am clearly part of the zeitgeist as I have just this year decided to eat kiwis skin-on. It is fine and I can pretend I am Ozzy Osborne eating a bat :)

I've also just realised this year that you can make a giant cup-a-soup by putting TWO sachets in a big mug, so my eating habits have really gone uphill.

GhoulWithADragonTattoo · 28/01/2020 12:52

The skins are very nutritious!

BritneyPeedOnALadybug · 28/01/2020 13:11

I didn’t know you were SUPPOSED to peel them Confused I’ve always eaten the skin!
