To think you eat the skin of a kiwi?!

Was going to put this in chat but thought I’d opt for the voting to get a clearer picture!
Dds and I eat the skin of the kiwi fruit. Dh and ds think we are weird. It’s much quicker, I’m sure it’s really nutritious and there’s less waste (okay, actually I just started eating the skin when I realised I was too lazy to bother peeling them).
I put it to you, good people of MN, AW(we)BU?

This is definitely going to be mentioned on the next thread about what you have learned on MN.

I can't believe that people eat the skin 🤢

FabulouslyFab · 28/01/2020 00:37

I only ate the skin once and my lips swelled up! Never again.

SirChing · 28/01/2020 00:42

Doesn't it immediately remove all moisture from your mouth? I'm flabbergasted by this. I imagine it would be like chewing fuzzy felt.

SirChing · 28/01/2020 00:44

Well at 89p for 6 in the co-op, it might be cheaper than the fillers I fancied for my top lip.......

goose1964 · 28/01/2020 00:46

You can eat it and I'm sure I've heard they're developing varieties without the fur.

LazJaz · 28/01/2020 00:56

Pleased I’m not the only one! Kiwi skin is the best! Tangy and awesome! Doesn’t actually feel furry in the mouth when eating, I find.

Zippetydoodahzippetyay · 28/01/2020 02:11

I used to eat the skin, lots of people thought I was weird. I've stopped doing it now though as I find I tend to get a rash on the corners of my mouth when I do. Now I just cut them in half and scoop out the inside with a spoon.

Zippetydoodahzippetyay · 28/01/2020 02:12

And if you wash them, they lose their furriness/fuzziness so it's much more like the skin of a peach.

slipperywhensparticus · 28/01/2020 02:18

I saw a guy rub the fur off on his Jean's then eat it like an apple

Jargoyle · 28/01/2020 03:59

I cut it into slices which makes the skin easier to eat. I do scrub it first which removes most of the hairs.

TheChosenTwo · 28/01/2020 07:15

So I’m not quite as alone as I initially thought.
11% of you are happy skin munchers like me Grin my heart is warmed!
It’s tangy and a nice contrast with the soft insides and a perfect fruit to eat on the go - I usually take one for after my lunch during my little walk at work, bite the top off and discard if I forget to cut it with a knife before I go and then eaten like an apple. Healthy, nutritious deliciousness. If you’ve never tried it, do it today!
However my grandad eats an apple right through to the core, pipe and the hard nasty bits around it. That’s gross - the only bit left when he’s finished is the stalk.

But the fur feels like a tarantula, and is a similar shape to the abdomen so nooooo to eating the skin Shock

Funny thread though!

Equanimitas · 28/01/2020 07:45

Yeah I guess it’s furry and fuzzy but so are raspberries and we don’t remove the fluffiness from those so...

It's not remotely comparable to raspberries!

MsChatterbox · 28/01/2020 07:48

I have never peeled a kiwi. I just cut it in half and eat it with a spoon..

Cambionome · 28/01/2020 08:05

If you are eating fuzzy furry raspberries op you need to think again! Sounds like they have gone off...!

TulipCat · 28/01/2020 08:09

There is such a thing as a kiwi fruit peeler? I had no idea. I want one!

Marshmallow91 · 28/01/2020 08:12

Your a monster Grin

TheChosenTwo · 28/01/2020 08:47

Just in that raspberries have fur on them! Not green mouldy fur obviously Grin just the regular fur, it’s on them when you go and pick them off the bush, they’re meant to be hairy!

I’d completely forgotten, but that’s how I always used to eat them too! Since I’ve had a family I’m so used to peeling and chopping them up for them that I do it automatically.
Bleurgh to eating the skin: this would make eating kiwis far less enjoyable for me. My mouth feels dry at the thought, but each to their own!

QuarterMileAtATime · 28/01/2020 08:58

My DP does this too. Takes the stalk off and eats the whole thing. I could do this without much discomfort, I think (but I’d rather not!)

VestaTilley · 28/01/2020 09:26

You can do but I choose not to!

SchadenfreudePersonified · 28/01/2020 09:57

I suppose it's like Len used to say on Strictly - "Just because you can it doesn't mean you should do it."

However I reiterate - I am a skin-eater and I am proud!

SomewhereInbetween1 · 28/01/2020 09:59

I eat the skin! It's the tartest part and absolutely delicious!

SomewhereInbetween1 · 28/01/2020 09:59

I eat apples from the top down, core included, too.
