Coronavirus are you worried?

So this virus has infected 600+ already and seems to be picking up pace. It’ll be in the UK any day, if it’s not already. AIBU to think this is going to have a big fallout and are you concerned?

I'm not really worried. I got very scared about Swine Flu - especially as I had a young toddler. But in the end I only knew one person who got it.

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 24/01/2020 11:49

I got swine flu (apparently) and was ill for about three months. I was off work for a week absolutely laid up and, because work never believes you're actually ill, went back to work. I got chest infection, ear infections all sort and was genuinely not fully recovered for 3 months. It was the most ill I've been in my adult life. I am generally a healthy, strong person.

The people this virus will really badly affect will be the usual suspects of old, young and immuno compromised.

turkeyontheplate · 24/01/2020 11:53

DS2 and I had swine flu. It was very nasty, probably the second nastiest dose of flu I've ever had, but neither of us needed hospital treatment or were really frightened at any point.

I'm not worried about this virus in an apocalyptic megadeath sense. I am worried about the parlous state of our hospitals and GP services and how a serious epidemic of a slightly-nastier-than-usual flu could play out. We're running on fumes as it is. My 75 year old father with stage four cancer and acute sepsis spent six hours being ignored in a corridor last year because there simply were no nurses available and no bed for him. I can see the elderly, poor and ill being quite badly affected if this illness spreads here.

NaturalBornWoman · 24/01/2020 13:47

I'm concerned as I'm on drugs which suppress my immune system and it looks like the situation is escalating. I've had a couple of respiratory viruses already this winter and there is a huge difference in how likely I am to catch a virus these days, how badly I'm affected and longer time to recover v what was usual for me before I started using these drugs.

nldnmum · 24/01/2020 14:12

I wouldn't panic yet but I would be highly cautious.
The city of Wuhan and surrounding cities are now quarantined which just shows how serious it is, especially given it's the biggest holiday in China just before Chinese New Year. Imagine shutting down London on the eve of Christmas?

Masks are sold out online and in pharmacies. Better be prepared than not

SisterAgatha · 24/01/2020 15:15

I am worried enough to not go in to London’s for Chinese New Year and to celebrate burns nights instead. I am always very cautious with trips to London now anyway because I often get ill from the tube, when I worked in London my breathing was terrible and I’m older now. I’m sure it will all blow over, but even if it was a normal flu outbreak I’d not risk the journey.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 24/01/2020 15:28

Right now I'm more worried for the Chinese folk in the quarantined areas, and what might happen if they break the rules in their determination to visit family over New Year

It is after all a communist country and human rights aren't always as well regarded as they could be

abbidabbi · 24/01/2020 15:49

@MissPoldark hi, yes, I found my information on ProMed- its from the international society for infectious diseases and provides updates to medical professionals. If you go to promed and select the coronavirus promed mail links, you will find many updates. This paragraph in particular is relevant:

As of 24:00 on [23 Jan 2020], the National Health and Health Commission has received a total of 830 confirmed cases of pneumonia of new coronavirus infection in 29 provinces (autonomous regions and municipalities), including 177 severe cases and 25 deaths, including 24 cases in Hubei Province 1 case in Hebei Province. 34 patients have been cured and discharged. A total of 1072 suspected cases were reported in 20 provinces (autonomous regions and municipalities).

So, so far 34 people totally cured and discharged and 25 dead. It's certainly not the common cold, but it's not a death sentence either for the majority of the population. As far as can be told at this early stage, the death rate looks to be similar to that of flu.

It's not the easiest website to navigate, but hopefully you find this useful/ reassuring! The 22nd Jan update also provides details of the 17 patients who had died up until that point, including their ages and other illnesses which contributed to the severity of their illness.

abbidabbi · 24/01/2020 15:51

If I were immunocompromised or elderly, I would be more concerned and would be taking the same precautions I would take to avoid getting the flu virus at this time of year

LeonoraFlorence · 24/01/2020 15:52

Kind of, yes. Had swine flu when pregnant.

WhoWants2Know · 24/01/2020 16:48

All of the 14 possible cases in the uk have now come back negative

NotYourTypicalNerd · 24/01/2020 17:46

@WhoWants2Know Yep that's what I heard. So not worried atm.

I too want to know where @babba2014 ?

TheGlaikitRambler · 24/01/2020 19:09

What is making me wonder, is why are they quarantining 35 MILLION people for only 26 deaths? Many Chinise cities are on lockdown with army patrols, 700,000 theatres closed, Disney closed - for a virus that has only killed 26?

Quartz2208 · 24/01/2020 19:13

China was very much seen as playing down SARS when that hit and its response was criticised. Remember it is a Communist country as well so its responses are always going to be different.

TheGlaikitRambler · 24/01/2020 19:16

Though if this video is true, I am doubting the 26 deaths number ...

CallmeAngelina · 24/01/2020 19:20

TheGlaikitRambler, I agree with you. The Chinese are reacting very strongly to this. What do they know that they're not telling?

DickDewy · 24/01/2020 19:22

My son said 'it's The Stand!'.

But not worried, no.

Mintjulia · 24/01/2020 19:33

So far it has caused most problems for those with chronic conditions, and it is not yet established in the UK, so no, I'm not worried. However if I had loved ones in that group or I had a very small baby I might be more concerned.

My DS caught swine flu at 2yo and ended up in ICU. It was the worst 36 hours I have had to cope with. So I understand those who may be worried.

TheGlaikitRambler · 24/01/2020 19:50

Rather alarmist article here, but I do suspect that numbers are way higher than being reported - just not on this scale!

halturnerradioshow.com/index.php/en/news-page/news-nation/coronavirus-in-china-20-million-quarantined-2-8-million-infected-112-000-dead

meredithgrey1 · 24/01/2020 19:55

@TheGlaikitRambler I think if China are lying about how bad it is, we'll know soon. There are confirmed cases in several other countries so if anyone doesn't trust what China says then just wait a little while and see what happens in Japan, the US, Thailand. I think the best way of seeing how bad it is is by looking at what happens in several different countries now people are aware and on the look out for it. I'm not particularly worried at the moment but do have a baby DD so am wary.

meredithgrey1 · 24/01/2020 20:00

@TheGlaikitRambler and the link you posted is from someone who (I believe) denies these holocaust so I think that article can be pretty readily dismissed.

TheGlaikitRambler · 24/01/2020 20:03

mereditgrey - watching with interest what happens in other countries with confirmed cases, it will give an indication of the seriousness I agree.

Yep, realised after I posted how awful that "journo" is, my apologies!

Namechangedfortubehelp · 24/01/2020 20:06

I'm a worrier, I'm lying with my 18m worried for her, worried about my 4yo to. When thinking sensibly I know the chances of us catching it are super low but like i said I'm a worrier. We live in north yorkshire and I've a trip to london planned in a couple of months which I'm considering cancelling. Daft I know

Emmabryant123 · 24/01/2020 20:06
