Coronavirus are you worried?

So this virus has infected 600+ already and seems to be picking up pace. It’ll be in the UK any day, if it’s not already. AIBU to think this is going to have a big fallout and are you concerned?

Ponoka7 which did you have though. The common cold is a coronavirus and we have all had this. You cannot possibly know this one is worse than the flu?

The unknowns for this are the infection rate (swine flu had a 10-20% of the population infection) versus the mortality rate (swine flu was quite low). The problem is these two things are hard to gauge because the chances are LOTS more people have had this than is actually reported

Ponoka7 · 23/01/2020 19:45

I think in regards to the people being treated, they are very fit and healthy younger workers. The demographic was early 20's, they were seafood workers.

By default, they tend to be a, lot healthier than the average Brit, just by being subjected to natural selection. Then the difference in lifestyle.

MsAwesomeDragon · 23/01/2020 19:45

I'm worried about any flu like viruses, not for myself but for my dad who is already ill. A proper bout of flu or another similar virus could kill him. But I'm worried about him, rather than worried about this specific virus outbreak iyswim.

Bunnyfuller · 23/01/2020 19:47

The media are revving up a frenzy, as usual. In many cases it’s as mild as a cold (same group of viruses).

I am so fucking sick of tabloids creating false panic.

TheDarkPassenger · 23/01/2020 19:48

I’m only worried that everyone with a minor cold is going to fucking moan at me that they’ve got it/had it, or moan on Facebook. Same shit as swine flu and bird flu. I’m not looking forward to my cousin ‘having it 5 times’

mumwon · 23/01/2020 19:50

coronavirus isn't flu its related (apparently) to the cold virus. So far - it appears not to have a severe death rate but we don't know how many people have been hospitalized or whether it will mutate. It should be noted that the Chinese Government have reacted quite strongly.
I worry more about a real chance of epidemics caused by dc not being vaccinated (Measles, Diphtheria, Polio (yes I know its drops) et al)

Ponoka7 · 23/01/2020 19:50

@Quartz2208, this strain causes severe respiratory symptoms. I've taken an interest because I've had TB and one of my consultants from Liverpool Tropical Diseases, who won awards during the Elboa Crisis, has got involved with this.

The Who was to declare a pandemic. They are screening people coming through the airports.

This is more than flu. I read an explanation of it compared to the strain that I had and as I said, I was hospitalised with mine, none smoker, reasonably well etc. I've had pneumonia and this was worse.

Quartz2208 · 23/01/2020 19:51

Ponoka the youngest death so far has been 49 years old, its hitting those aged 40 and above far more than below and very few children (if any) have been included in the stats. Most deaths so far have been in elderly patients with underlying issues

Swine flu was by far the illest I have ever been and even then I was lucky not to be hospitalised

Ponoka7 · 23/01/2020 19:53

The ordinary corona virus is related to the cold virus but the effect isn't the same. The SARS virus is the same relation, as such.

I have friin Nigeria, they do a lot of business in China and it would be disastrous if it reaches there.

I'm not thinking in an 'I'm alright jack' way.

Bunnyfuller · 23/01/2020 19:54

@Ponoka7

Do you have a link to where you read the explanation?

dimsum123 · 23/01/2020 19:59

It's a mild flu like virus. You're at risk if you already have an underlying condition, are very young or old. Otherwise you'll be fine and it's just the usual media hype we get every other year or so.

BrokenWing · 23/01/2020 20:15

It is a worry for the vulnerable. 5 people (at least 3 of which are chinese nationals) in Scotland have been diagnosed with flu and are being tested for the virus. Let's hope it's not here already.

TheoriginalLEM · 23/01/2020 20:17

I suffer with health anxiety and im not worried.

PassMeAnotherCoffee · 23/01/2020 20:19

I'm one of many who have an 'underlying condition'. Every new strain of respiratory infection is a concern to me. I always have my flu jab, and make sure I know which flu viruses turn out to be the predominant ones that year.

I'm pissed off about the incessant reporting of "oh it's only people who are already .x. so nobody else need worry". It's as if asthmatics weren't really people at all.

I'm not panicking - that's pointless - but I live in a place with a sizeable (and rich, so travelling a lot) Chinese population and I know we'll have cases here soon, as we have done with previous new strains. I haven't read a single tabloid report about this, but my ears pricked up as soon as I heard the first report.

WhoWants2Know · 23/01/2020 20:20

I'm not panicking or anything, but I'm not entirely trusting of information that comes from the Chinese government.

NoShitHemlock · 23/01/2020 20:23

I am not panicking, but my mum has been quite ill recently and has a hospital appointment next week. This afternoon I read that there is a suspected case at the same hospital.

I know the hospital will take every precaution, but I still have the fear.

muddypuddled · 23/01/2020 20:26

It's been around in the uk for years, I've had lots of patients with it. All have survived that I know of. Just keep good hand hygiene and I'm sure you'll be fine.

JulietJanuary · 23/01/2020 20:26

No.

Mrsgoggingsthe3rd · 23/01/2020 20:45

I have diagnosed health anxiety, especially where my toddler is concerned. It’s actually making me feel sick with worry. But probably

Mrsgoggingsthe3rd · 23/01/2020 20:45

Probably shouldn’t!

Emmelina · 23/01/2020 20:46

Not especially worried, but they’ve known about it for weeks but only now seem to be screening for it at airports. It could already be here and we’re just not aware yet. One person unknowingly ill on a plane could potentially infect the other 200 on board.

Pjsandbaileys · 23/01/2020 20:50

I wouldn't say I'm worried but I am immunocompromised and have contracted pneumonia twice in the last three years because of it, I'm just keeping an eye on the reports. If it does become an issue where I live I would take precautions, stay away from crowded places, extra hand washing for me and kids etc. I feel so sorry for the hospital staff who can't avoid it so that and as usual are on the frontline.

lyralalala · 23/01/2020 20:52

My only concern with big things like this is the amount of people who turn to cheap hand gels and don't take the time to properly wash their hands.

I think, from seeing all the reports, there is likely a lot more people who have the virus than has been officially reported. Only time will tell what the mortality rate is actually going to be like

boobot1 · 23/01/2020 21:02

No these things are always overblown.
