Coronavirus are you worried?

So this virus has infected 600+ already and seems to be picking up pace. It’ll be in the UK any day, if it’s not already. AIBU to think this is going to have a big fallout and are you concerned?

So weird to read back over this thread !!!

Thehawki · 21/01/2021 22:59

Oh gosh, that was a painful read. I'm quite glad we didn't know.

Sheleg · 21/01/2021 23:12

Well this thread aged like milk!

Serin · 21/01/2021 23:20

God, that was chilling.

DimidDavilby · 21/01/2021 23:25

Presumably this thread will be locked like the previous one was (linked below).
A bizarre and infantilising choice I thought, why stop people from reflecting?

Tenementfunster · 21/01/2021 23:32

That’s a fascinating and horrifying read. We were right on the edge of it all back then. Makes me sad for everything we’ve lost in such a short time.

Nospringchickendipper · 21/01/2021 23:50

Hindsight is a wonderful thing.

princessTiasmum · 21/01/2021 23:58

A friend of ours is a volunteer at a hospital in the next town, and she says they are moving patients into other hospitals as there are no available beds where she is
Also says when we are told it isn't as deadly as the first one we are not being to;ld the truth,
The staff know, and are overwhelmed
I do now believe we are not being told how bad things really are
Almost 2000 in in 24 hours is terrible, and it seems to be not getting any better
I don't go shopping anymore, and don't have anyone in the house
The news today about increasing the fines for breaking the rules, and in contradiction, house parties can have up to 15 people in a gathering seems mad
People are dropping like flies, and at a much younger age too
How can anyone believe this is a hoax?

AcornAutumn · 22/01/2021 00:05

"The news today about increasing the fines for breaking the rules, and in contradiction, house parties can have up to 15 people in a gathering seems mad "

You can't.

It was a terrible way to explain it but it's essentially a higher fine than yesterday, if you have a gathering of 15+. I have no idea which fine applies of it's 15!

Thewiseoneincognito · 22/01/2021 00:07

Lots of confident no I’m not scareds.

I remember the threads with people arguing that we’d never lockdown in this country. Lol. Fastward three lockdowns in 12 months...

CountessFrog · 22/01/2021 00:07

Everyone has a friend who is a volunteer at a hospital and imparts information that the virus is much worse and killing younger people.

A sobering read Sad.

I wonder how many of those posters who were so blasé have now been personally affected?

I was one. Went abroad in February with not a thought for this new virus. Little did we know . . .

Duemarch2021 · 22/01/2021 00:24

Omg reading back on this is crazy! I remember thinking it wont come to the uk.. then i remember the first case... and the first case in my area... thinking there might just be 5! So scary x

LoisWilkersonslastnerve · 22/01/2021 00:29

Like watching a frog in a pot of hot waterSad

Wheresmykimchi · 22/01/2021 00:35

I remember sitting in work ignoring people talking about it, thinking it was all just OTT.

I also remember saying the schools would never shut.

It's been over a year now since I've seen many members of my family.
I live in a weird bubble where I just detach from it, and don't think about it.

Surreal.

WhenPidgeonsCry · 22/01/2021 00:44

It's certainly interesting how we are shaped by our own experiences. People weren't worried because they'd never faced anything like this before. It seems laughable now that people thought it may never even arrive in the UK! But at the time, our experience was SARS and MERS and viruses being hyped up only to disappear without really affecting us.

Imagine how it will be next time (and there will certainly be a next time). Do you think anyone will be saying "oh I doubt it's gonna reach us here, I'm not worried, it's only a 2.8% death rate" etc? Very unlikely!

bluecheesefan · 22/01/2021 01:15

I can remember thinking (in about February last year when this thread was last posted on), that surely... if the virus is that bad... surely then all the government needs to do is close our borders and prevent people from travelling and flying all over the world. And if other countries did the same, then it would stop the virus in its tracks.

They didn't do it though, did they?

ConfusedcomMum · 22/01/2021 01:37

I remember this thread. This is when I started adding antibac stuff to my Brexit stash (wayyy before the panic buying btw!).

NoseinBook3 · 22/01/2021 01:40

Yes I was worried... but I could never have imagined what the year would bring

whereismormonjesus · 22/01/2021 01:40

Amazing to see the user who thought 2.8% was a tiny chance of dying. If you had a 2.8% chance of death every time you flew, you wouldn’t take your bloody chances.

I couldn't agree more. In fact I thought it was a really valuable piece of real time social history to be able to reflect back after such a short interval because the pace of change in the last year has been so extraordinary.

Presumably someone who posted on it and now looks like a bit of a dick for being so dismissive complained to MNHQ.

MarieIVanArkleStinks · 22/01/2021 01:51

Is the OP there's a Coronavirus board where you can take your catastrophising and be among friends?

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 22/01/2021 01:54

This thread hasn't aged well, has it! But who could have known, in reality?

@whereismormonjesus - exactly - 2.8% chance is 1 in ~36, that's really quite high!
And we know now that of patients who are hospitalised, it's more like 1 in 4 people who die :(

I've just read about another case of a young, no underlying causes person who got sick over the weekend and died on Monday. That's the second in 2 weeks, just from friends I know in the UK. This seems to be much worse than the last wave, when people didn't die so quickly from it - guessing that it's because it's the new variant? Awful situation, and I can't believe that some people STILL aren't taking it seriously.
