Coronavirus are you worried?

So this virus has infected 600+ already and seems to be picking up pace. It’ll be in the UK any day, if it’s not already. AIBU to think this is going to have a big fallout and are you concerned?

actually diagnosed? news was just on saying waiting for results with 6 cleared!

LoveNote · 24/01/2020 09:32

what age are the dead in China then?

Oddsocksandnosleep · 24/01/2020 09:32

@LoveNote maybe I read it wrong but what I saw was diagnosed, might be my mistake!! Still worried!

everythingthelighttouches · 24/01/2020 09:34

whettam I have been watching video on twitter and it is not true to say at all that it is
“Awash with videos of people dying in hospital”
At. All.

It is very true to say there are multiple videos of dire conditions in hospitals, people are waiting for over a day on the floor to be seen by a doctor. The supermarket shelves are empty. Medics in hazmat suits. Trucks disinfecting the streets. These are verified in mainstream reputable media.
It must be a waking nightmare for those in quarantine right now.

The Chinese authorities are building a brand new hospital for 3000 2019-coronavirus patients this weekend! Ready Monday.

I can absolutely recommend to anyone following this on twitter
Helen Branswell.

Sparkle2020 · 24/01/2020 09:37

If I’m immunocompromised AND living in Edinburgh should I be worried? Cause I’m currently concerned, especially as I was at the hospital where 3 people have had it just 2 nights ago 😅

LoveNote · 24/01/2020 09:37

i predict my face masks in store will start selling well this weekend. ironically they are shipped in from china so may now have supply issues

i feel so sorry for all those people. It does appear to be spreading through Asia alarmingly quickly

lyralalala · 24/01/2020 09:38

14 people have been diagnosed in the UK... I am increasingly worried!

No-one in the UK has been diagnosed

14 people have been tested. 5 have tested negative, 9 are still awaiting results

loobyloo1234 · 24/01/2020 09:40

what age are the dead in China then?

The median age of those that have died due to the virus is 75. All with previous health issues

NoodlesMcGee · 24/01/2020 09:42

@drcb83 if it is any comfort, many people wear masks every day (as standard) when in public eg on their daily commute, just as a precaution. My journey to and from work is awash with people wearing them - about 30% of people.

I think the HK flu, SARS etc really woke people up to this, plus because many people live in multi-generational living it is sensible to protect more vulnerable family members.

I think your visitors are also sensitive to the fact they may inadvertently come into contact with someone infected while visiting, so are just taking precautions.

Pannalash · 24/01/2020 09:43

Thank you @everythingthelighttouches that is very informative.

SecretWitch · 24/01/2020 09:44

everythingthelighttouches Thank you for your post. I’m fairly certain my anxiety is my over active mother response. He is a very healthy 23 yr old and seems unconcerned at this time.

nonicknameseemsavailable · 24/01/2020 09:47

there are no confirmed cases in the UK, they have tested some (who could have any form of any kind of virus if we are sensible about this) and some are negative and some results are pending.

Really there is no point getting hysterical. in reality even if it is the world's worst virus what are any of us going to do about it?

Ebola scared me a lot lot more than this.

SlothHouse · 24/01/2020 09:49

I'm worried about my elderly mother, but she never leaves the house so she should be fine. Unless one of my siblings who lives with her picks it up

Glitterblue · 24/01/2020 09:56

I'm scared. I almost died from swine flu (asthmatic), I was in hospital for 2 weeks and took another 8 to feel back to normal. My 90 year old grandfather has recurring chest infections after having pneumonia last year and I worry about him.

Whatafustercluck · 24/01/2020 09:58

There are a few videos on Twitter, some are spurious to say the least - people literally 'dropping' in the street, which doesn't seem consistent with the symptoms. Yes, hospitals overrun, but given the Chinese reaction to the outbreak it will have caused panic. Most of those being treated in hospitals may be presenting with nothing more than a common cold.

The only thing that gives me pause for thought is that China is a secretive state. In all likelihood they are deliberately underestimating the numbers. Plus, Wuhan is apparently home to a testing facility where they were 'studying' the spread of Ebola and VARS. But that could well be fake news promulgated by the uninformed on Twitter.

I personally would take little notice of the Chinese-provided figures. I will look to more reliable sources.

bellinisurge · 24/01/2020 10:10

No. I'm a general prepper with MS. I'm currently more concerned about selfish dickheads in my local area whose anti vax stupidity means there is no longer herd immunity for measles in my town. And I've never had measles and can't, for health reasons, be vaccinated against it. And it may well kill me if I contract it.
I had norovirus two winters on the trot (pardon pun) which makes winter a nerve wracking time for me every year.
This is way down the list of viruses I worry about. It's on the list but currently not high up the list.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 24/01/2020 10:13

I agree that it is a waste of worry to worry about how it might affect us personally - I'd save that worry for if it started spreading in an area local to you.

I don't understand the logic of finding ebola more worrying.

I think any hospital system would be overwhelmed if it experienced the number of cases that Wuhan is.

nonicknameseemsavailable · 24/01/2020 10:17

I found ebola more worrying because the survival rate if contracted was very low wasn't it? So if it spread to the UK and was caught then more chance of dying. This is, as I understand it, a form of flu. SHOULD only really be a risk to people with already existing health problems. So far, it looks to be a small death rate in proportion to number of infections.

everythingthelighttouches · 24/01/2020 10:23

whatsclusterfuck it is true that a Category 4 (highest level) facility was sited in Wuhan and that only a few of these exist in China.

I read the article online in a reputable scientific journal from when the lab was planned. Can’t find it now but will search and add a link.

However, there is no evidence whatsoever to suggest this is connected to the outbreak of coronavirus. It has come from consumption of wild animals. This is a known transmission route for novel coronaviruses. It is how SARS started.

Pedallleur · 24/01/2020 10:40

if it's the start of a zombie apocalypse then yes!

Retroflex · 24/01/2020 10:42

Well there's now 5 patients who are currently being tested in Scotland, so as an immunocompromised person I'm as cautious with this illness as I am with any other...

Quartz2208 · 24/01/2020 11:03

I find Ebola far more scary because the mortality rate is high. If that managed easy transmission it would be a nightmare
This for me is similar to swine flu and Mexico and I got that so it’s less scary

drivingtofrance · 24/01/2020 11:06

I'm not worried for myself or my immediate family as we're pretty healthy.

However it is all stillvague how bad this will be? Or not.

everythingthelighttouches · 24/01/2020 11:16

It is far too early to tell which way it is going to go.

paintedfences · 24/01/2020 11:42

I'm concerned for my friend who is nine weeks pregnant. And for my 14 month old. And for myself, if I get pregnant next month.

I looked up flu during pregnancy last night and even 'normal' flu can cause maternal and fetal death, so it's concerning.
