So this virus has infected 600+ already and seems to be picking up pace. It’ll be in the UK any day, if it’s not already. AIBU to think this is going to have a big fallout and are you concerned?

2 confirmed cases in France now, only a matter of time before we have it I think.

Emmabryant123 · 24/01/2020 20:10

😩

BelleSausage · 24/01/2020 20:14

The video is interesting but not what people are spinning it out to be.

There was an FT correspondent reporting from that hospital this morning. He has said that the hospital is under severe strain and is struggling to cope so much that people are sleeping in corridors.

Those people aren’t dead. They are asleep and sick. I image their heads are covered to block out the corridor lights and allow them to get some rest.

The Chinese aren’t barbarians. They would be taking away the dead bodies to the morgue.

BelleSausage · 24/01/2020 20:16

14 people in the U.K. have been tested for Corona virus. 5 have been given the all clear.

The WHO is suggesting that the infection rate is 1.4 to 2.5 people per infected person, which is low.

If you want to get freaked out by anything then Google MERS.

meredithgrey1 · 24/01/2020 20:21

14 people in the U.K. have been tested for Corona virus. 5 have been given the all clear.

They were all cleared earlier today. I guess with an illness that causes cold/flu-like symptoms there will be a lot of people that may have travelled to China and have those symptoms that don't actually have this specific virus (especially in January!)

BelleSausage · 24/01/2020 20:23

Good to know @meredithgrey1

This is an interesting article which might explain why the Chinese government are freaking out.

Why does nobody ever talk about Spanish Flu? It wiped out up to 5% of the world's population! I highly doubt with modern medicine this epidemic will come to much.

MarieFromStTropez · 24/01/2020 20:28

@TheGlaikitRambler I agree with you that it seems a lot of fuss for only 26 dead.

Have they confirmed it definitely originated in the food market? If so, do they know from which animal?

Oakenbeach · 24/01/2020 20:56

Severe health anxiety. I feel sick with worry when I think about it. Very worried

Your health anxiety is clearly making you far more ill than this virus ever will! However, I know that from experience of getting out of destructive thought patterns is easier said than done.

Quartz2208 · 24/01/2020 20:58

Bellesausage really good article. I think we forget how different the Chinese Government

myohmywhatawonderfulday · 24/01/2020 21:03

BirdieFriend...where are you when we need you to answer an actual real question?!

slipperywhensparticus · 24/01/2020 21:15

In that video the first person on the right looks like they are sleeping my son sleeps with his foot like that .. I've got a chronic health condition and caught swine flu off the bus last time I was going out tomorrow to a well populated area...might change it to the forest..maybe

raspberrymolakoff · 25/01/2020 04:47

I'm surprised at the number of people saying it's "only" a flu like virus. Influenza killed more people than the WW1 a year later, in 1919. The trouble is people say they've 'flu when they've a heavy cold. Hopefully this is going to be contained. DH and I are both immune compromised and he is prone to pneumonia so we could really do without it.

midnightmisssuki · 25/01/2020 04:58

No.

Muddyfunker · 25/01/2020 05:26

No.

In the same way I wasn't about bird flu, swine flu, ebola, mad cow disease, aids and all the other fear inducing things the media force down people's throats.

A scared population is easier to control.

ChessIsASport · 25/01/2020 05:34

The Spanish Flu was so deadly because it killed mostly young and previously healthy people. As far as I am aware the people dying from coronavirus are the elderly and people with underlying health conditions. I hope that this is the case.

BelleSausage · 25/01/2020 06:14

So, as of this morning, 1,200 infected and 41 deaths.

That puts the death rate at 3.4%

Which is much lower than SARS which was around 10% and MERS which is 35%.

Most deaths seem to be the elderly and chronically ill.

However, remember that all of these deaths are in and overworked Chinese hospital. I wouldn’t expect as many deaths in countries with better resourced hospitals.

nldnmum · 25/01/2020 07:20

I think part of what makes people fearful is the dramatic spike in the confirmed cases. I remember earlier this week we were at below 100 and now 1200. More data is needed but if it is an exponential growth then it would feel like its spiralling out of control.

It's not a worldwide public health emergency yet as WHO has said but certainly a severe public health emergency in China. Again imagine what it would feel like if London is quarantined, shut down, no one in or out, roads blocked flights trains all cancelled, just before Christmas. This is exactly what it feels like for billions of Chinese people

ChardonnaysDistantCousin · 25/01/2020 07:34

However, remember that all of these deaths are in and overworked Chinese hospital. I wouldn’t expect as many deaths in countries with better resourced hospitals.

What, like ours?

What people forget about Spanish Flu is that it killed all these people in a world without air travel. Today, the number would be exponentially higher.

jasjas1973 · 25/01/2020 07:43

The Chinese wouldn't be closing down several cities twice the size of London or building a new hospital if this was just a form flu.

Chinese HCP professionals are getting this virus and dying, they wouldn't be old either.

I don't think we are being told the truth about this virus, a few days ago a UK health spokesman said it was inconceivable the virus would reach the UK.

ChardonnaysDistantCousin · 25/01/2020 07:48

Billions, nldnmum?

Is the whole of China under quarantine?

everythingthelighttouches · 25/01/2020 08:08

ilovepinot. Thank you!! I have been looking for that article everywhere. Pubmed was not cooperating!

Gatehouse77 · 25/01/2020 08:13

No more than I have been by all the other ‘pandemics’ we’ve had recently.

TheDeep · 25/01/2020 08:15

I think people are forgetting that China has had issues in the past with telling the truth...

I don't think they'd be shutting down several cities if the number of deaths are really that low.

An interesting study on the first 41 confirmed cases.
