Coronavirus are you worried?

So this virus has infected 600+ already and seems to be picking up pace. It’ll be in the UK any day, if it’s not already. AIBU to think this is going to have a big fallout and are you concerned?

No.

Imserious · 23/01/2020 21:12

I watched the film " contagion" Shock a few years ago. So yes it does worry me.

Marnie76 · 23/01/2020 21:16

@thenoisehurts

2.8% is a massive percentage. Times that by the 66.44 million people in the UK. So I’m not sure of your logic on that one.

However, I don’t think there is a need to majorly panic. They are hopefully going to contain and control it.

lotsofoysters · 23/01/2020 21:19

@muddypuddled how do you know it's the same coronavirus when all of the infectious disease experts are saying it's a novel virus we haven't encountered before?

ActualHornist · 23/01/2020 21:19

I worried enough to be sending shocked emojis to my husband and telling him we need to stock up on water and tinned food.

Not worried enough to actually do it!

goodgodingovan · 23/01/2020 21:23

No, everything I've read that isn't part of the media frenzy have said it's usually a mild illness. It's a bit like a cold / flu by all accounts.

Buddyelf · 23/01/2020 21:27

No I’m not. Another anxiety sufferer and I’m not worried about this. The media is a disgrace when it comes to these things. They cause panic and fear with sensationalist headlines for clicks and reads completely disregarding logic and reasoning. This is probably a nasty virus, like flu, but headlines like ‘deadly virus death toll raises to 17’ Hmm don’t help.

FizzyIce · 23/01/2020 21:28

Not worried .
More scaremongering as usual like all the other “epidemics” .
We have atleast one a year

GetRid · 23/01/2020 21:29

@muddypuddled you can't possibly have had patients with this as it's a completely new strain of coronavirus. That's why it's in the news!

I'm not too concerned as it seems less bad than SARS, given what we know so far.

MinisterforCheekyFuckery · 23/01/2020 21:30

Bird Flu, Swine Flu, SARS, Ebola, Mad Cow Disease....I worried about all of them at the time, purely because of all the media hype, but I'm still here and worrying didn't help anything so have resolved not to do the same again.

Welltroddenpath · 23/01/2020 21:36

No I’m not worried at all. I was telling my 16 year old ds that this is just nature and natures way. It’s a pointless thing to worry about, like death from ageing, you can not control these things.

I find a new virus crossing species as it happens quite interesting. I have worked in decease control so maybe that’s why I’m not scared? I think I understand it quite well, so that lessons the fear.

Afrigginggoat · 23/01/2020 21:36

I work in the nhs. I'm paid to be worried about this sort of shit.

ragged · 23/01/2020 21:47

I am getting impression this one has been hyped b/c of the Chinese slow response to SARS in 2000 (or whenever it was). There was concern by public health officials the Chinese wouldn't take this seriously, too, unless a fuss was made early. Now it seems like Chinese authorities are over-reacting, imho, in ways that may drive sick people underground.

How does a sick person get to hospital if the public transport is shut down? Any ideas?

RozHuntleysStump · 23/01/2020 21:55

I’m a bit worried. The uni near me is very popular with Chinese students.

ButterflyRuns · 23/01/2020 21:55

A little but it's still unfolding and it's not like this is the first outbreak, it'll come and go quickly I hope.

Quartz2208 · 23/01/2020 21:57

Why all the concern about living in areas with chinese students etc? Who probably have no more being to China in the past two week than I have.

Once it gets into this country it doesnt matter. The concern over this seems to not be its seriousness or death rate but the infection rate and the speed at which it spreads.

Skittlesandbeer · 23/01/2020 22:07

The worry with Chinese populations is that the biggest cultural migration on the planet is about to happen, in and out of China, for Lunar new year. Sooo many people ‘going home’ for family celebrations. The exact thing you’d hope to avoid if you’re trying to contain a virus spreading.

If the epicentre of a virus was New York or Sydney, and Xmas was days away, that’d be the same issue (but on a far smaller scale, population wise).

My govt (not UK) is trying to assure us that ‘serious screening measures’ are already in place at our airports, so not to worry. Um... do you mean asking people disembarking from planes if they feel sick? For a virus that is known to be fairly asymptomatic, and otherwise mimics a cold? People who may not speak English, and/or are trying to get to family or back to work? Wonder what they’ll answer?

My city has 2 flights a week coming in from the city that the virus started in. Sometimes I wonder if the authorities are actually going with ‘we can’t really do anything, so let’s speed up the virus spread and let the cards fall where they may. Spend what resources we have treating victims and burying the dead.’

muddypuddled · 23/01/2020 22:10

Ok, didn't read the article and see the new strain but honestly coronavirus in old strains has been around for a long time and really is a flu like illness. Regular infection control such as good hand hygiene is enough to protect yourself.

MrsCatBasket · 23/01/2020 22:17

No spleen and severely imunno compromised - so yes, I am scared witless at the thought of this

StillCounting123 · 23/01/2020 22:18

www.bbc.co.uk/news/amp/uk-northern-ireland-51227183 reports are it's possibly in Belfast, NI.

lisag1969 · 23/01/2020 22:19

I think they should stop people travelling in from China or if they've been there not let them travel. The precautions they are taking are not good enough. X

Floralnomad · 23/01/2020 22:22

I’m not remotely concerned and agree if anything it will be like the swine flu outbreak . I did get swine flu when they were still giving out tamiflu to sufferers and the tamiflu made me sicker than the actual disease .

JulietJanuary · 23/01/2020 22:29

Train your kids to wash their hands frequently.

I'm going to remind mine, yet again.

Hingeandbracket · 23/01/2020 22:31

YAbu op. I am not worried
