My 12 year old still loves Lego especially Star Wars and Ninjago etc. He had a large Star Wars ship for Xmas & still plays with it, reads Lego books etc.

My mother things he’s too old for it (although she hasn’t specified what she thinks he should be doing at 12)

I always thought Lego was for any age to be honest and would rather he played with Lego than spend hours on a screen....

Aibu? What should 12 year olds be doing?!

I believe that many successful engineers started out as Lego fans.

DBIL adores Lego - the DCs are not allowed near HIS lego, only their own Duplos.

And in DD's secondary school, there is a very active Lego club which does a lot of things around modelling, coding, building robots etc. They are going to a major annual competition for schools this weekend, and have been working on their project for weeks - from 1st year to 5th years at least (possibly some 6th years - final year - also). They are all hoping that the sports department doesn't have many matches planned, as 5 of the 6 hockey goalkeepers in school are in the Lego club!! Grin

Lego goes right up to adults. He's fine bless him. Still a kid. My 13 year old nephew had Lego from me last year.

Havanananana · 22/01/2020 17:15

Once he's finished building the sets, he can turn his attention to making brickfilms like this:

Dd 22 got Hogwarts castle for xmas and ds 24 usually gets Lego architect cityscapes for the cities he has visited

bruffin · 22/01/2020 17:20

Forgot to say when dd started secondary the 6th form engineering club had Lego mindstorms and used to let ds join. Mindstorms was also being used in universities at the time.

Here's Anna Meredith, a leading acoustic/electronic composer, playing with LEGO:

DillBaby some people use Lego to make unbelievably amazing works of art. Lego is art. If people want to display it in their house why is that 'sad'? Are people only allowed to display paintings, wooden sculptures, fancy wicker baskets, pottery, vases, home made cushions, photography etc in their homes? Or is that sad too?

NoIDontWatchLoveIsland · 22/01/2020 17:31

I got Lego (especially the Technics) sets until I was well into secondary (I'm 34 now and still love lego)

As a pp said, it's about balance. I would hope at that age he would also be wanting to
A) spend plenty of time outdoors in summer
B) socialise with friends the same age.

I would only worry if lego as a hobby was dominating to the exclusion of other things

Glitterblue · 22/01/2020 17:33

DH and I still love lego at 43.

Ed Sheeran bought the Death Star with his first royalty cheque

My parents in their 70s lives Lego. We are in our late 50s - love Lego. Only the person who’s ‘inner child’ has died hates Lego.
My ‘inner child’ get jealous when I buy it for other people’s xmases. ...

Kaykay066 · 22/01/2020 17:51

Know what I’d rather my son was doing!!
We have lots of Lego sets
He’s more interested in Ipad

Brefugee · 22/01/2020 17:51

the thing that made me really really happy this Christmas was getting 2 Lego sets. 1 I knew about (was in the shop to make sure DH bought it) was a Lego gingerbread house. The other was a Millenium Falcon which was a complete surprise. I am still grinning. I'm 56 and I don't care. Lego is fantastic.

Neacy · 22/01/2020 17:55

My son is 35, every Christmas we buy him Lego, he loves it. X

toffeeghirlinatwirl · 22/01/2020 18:07

I used to curse stepping on lego or hoovering pieces up. My ds is 17 now. All his batman and Harry Potter lego is now boxed up in the attic. He played until he was 13. I still find tiny pieces around the house and reminisce. Life is busy with college, work, gf etc now but it's all still there for him to come back to. You're never too old.

LookToTreblesGoingTreblesGone · 22/01/2020 19:07

More than once I have been playing with Lego with my children, looked up after some considerable time and seen that I was actually now playing with it alone. Apparently I have more staying power with Lego than my offspring. Pfft, lightweights!

SimonJT · 22/01/2020 19:08

I’m 32, when my son is in bed I will be making my new lego.

Flibbertyjibbit · 22/01/2020 19:09

My husband is 35 and still gets a Lego set for birthday/Christmas Grin never too old for Lego!

MarshaBradyo · 22/01/2020 19:10

Yes it’s fine, good to do something that’s zen and not a screen. Ds got the Lego Death Star when he was 13 for Christmas.

Herts6789 · 22/01/2020 19:11

Never too old for lego! I am 28 and still have all my old sets in boxes under the stairs, because i couldnt let my dad throw it out when i moved!

TheThingWithFeathers · 22/01/2020 19:16

41 year old Lego lover here, itching to build the Friends set I bought at the weekend! I love my Lego, I collect Ideas sets and the modular buildings. I'm saving up for the bookshop.

ErrolTheDragon · 22/01/2020 19:16

Forgot to say when dd started secondary the 6th form engineering club had Lego mindstorms and used to let ds join. Mindstorms was also being used in universities at the time.

It still is - the 'icebreaker' labs for the Cambridge MEng involves building Lego mindstorms contraptions.

Whatsnewpussyhat · 22/01/2020 19:25

There’s nothing sadder than when you go to someone’s home and they have shitty bits of plastic on display as if they’re ornaments or artwork or something

Haha Haha. You'd hate my house. I'd rather look at lego WALL:E than a soulless piece of ceramic or a display of candles.

I'm even going to buy this to stick on the wall in my lego room.
