My 12 year old still loves Lego especially Star Wars and Ninjago etc. He had a large Star Wars ship for Xmas & still plays with it, reads Lego books etc.

My mother things he’s too old for it (although she hasn’t specified what she thinks he should be doing at 12)

I always thought Lego was for any age to be honest and would rather he played with Lego than spend hours on a screen....

Aibu? What should 12 year olds be doing?!

Better than being on the xbox all the time! It's very creative and great for the mind. No he's not too young. I think it's great.

Purpletigers · 22/01/2020 19:35

My 14 year old got Lego Porg for Christmas . She collects the brickheadz . Her almost 50 year old ( cough cough ) mother got the gingerbread house .

TheBigFatMermaid · 22/01/2020 19:35

My DS loves Lego! He is 13! It is absolutely right for them to play with.

newbingepisodes · 22/01/2020 19:36

My DH is obsessed with Lego he's 3 times older than your DS!

Purpletigers · 22/01/2020 19:38

We have the full set of Harry Potter minifigures framed in our loo . Have a google of “ framed monochrome Lego minifigures “ . They can look very artistic . Also red square brick frames have a wonderful website selling framed minifigures .

DesignedForLife · 22/01/2020 19:39

I still play with Lego

JRUIN · 22/01/2020 19:40

I think your DS should be encouraged to carry on with his his creative play and your mum should butt out. Jesus why can't we just let kids be kids?

Imthevoice · 22/01/2020 19:41

Just bought the Friends Central Perk set for my 25 year old

user1019273703 · 22/01/2020 19:42

Im 31 and got 2 lego sets for christmas. You are never too old for lego!

Deadheadstickeronacadillac · 22/01/2020 19:48

I'm 41 and build Lego with my 12 year old. He then builds Lego with his 3 year old sister.
Your mum is just being mean.

RHTawneyonabus · 22/01/2020 19:50

Get your son to watch Lego masters on channel 4!

Crocky · 22/01/2020 19:51

I’m 49 and I want someone to buy me Lego for Christmas 😔

FlamingoQueen · 22/01/2020 19:51

My DH (46) had Lego for Christmas. My DF (72) still loves Lego. I would definitely encourage playing with it.

Ofalltheginjoints · 22/01/2020 19:59

@DillBaby you’d hate my house then! DP has a huge Lego collection all set up and displayed in the Lego room, in fact the Lego room and its size was a major consideration, we are talking tens of thousands of pounds tho!

DP is an AFOL and also runs a Lego business alongside is “normal” business and runs events for people of all ages!

Now I don’t really get it but he has made some amazing builds, from modifying sets to making his own MOC’s and doing exhibitions along the way, they were talking about Lego for mindfulness on Radio 4 You and Yours last week

OP if your son has a passion for Lego ignore what your friend says! Lego isn’t up to 99 years old (and beyond) for nothing!
Now it does drive me made but I find it very helpful for my chronic pain as a distraction, if you want a list of UK Lego shows pm me and I’ll send it across

grudieabbey · 22/01/2020 20:03
  1. I love Lego. Would be chuffed to bits if I had some. Wouldn’t mind sitting down and building something. It’s a totally harmless little thing. If he was 12 and doing cocaine I would worry. Pfft. Its Lego. Gees.
PurpleCrazyHorse · 22/01/2020 20:07

I met a real life Lego designer who's mentioned in one of the LEGO books! He's definitely an adult and spends his days 'playing' with Lego. He seems to absolutely love his job, which is what I'd want for any of my children.

DH is a Lego builder, he buys individual bricks to exactly build his creations and puts them online in various Lego forums. We have so much Lego that we can't really organise it and it's in 5 big plastic tubs! I joke that we could build a house extension with it.

I'd run with his hobby TBH, take him along to some shows and nurture his enthusiasm. It could turn into a job or just be something he does to relax.

Minxmumma · 22/01/2020 20:11

You are never to old for Lego. My Mum had a set a few years ago, she was nearly 70!

Alarae · 22/01/2020 20:15

My friend turned 28 and for her birthday bought herself the massive Lego Harry Potter Hogwarts Castle.

She also happily built it over three days and documented it on Facebook.

No upper age limit for Lego!

Lillybobtail · 22/01/2020 20:34

When we were about 16 we always got the Lego out when I had friends round. Used to have epic Lego pirate battles that lasted for hours...

Rubyupbeat · 22/01/2020 20:34

Rubbish, I am nearly 56, next month, and 4 lots of lego are on my list.
Most of the creator range are 16 plus anyway.
I've just finished a large land rover defender and it was no mean feat, believe me!

Waveysnail · 22/01/2020 20:37

My son to be 12 year old is currently sat upstairs tweaking (playing) with his prize lego ninjago ship

Grafittiqueen · 22/01/2020 20:45

My DS is getting Star Wars Lego for his 13th birthday.

JassyRadlett · 22/01/2020 21:21

I am desperate to know what @DillBaby has adorning her home.

Poetryinaction · 22/01/2020 21:28

I love Lego. Aged 37.

LucaFritz · 22/01/2020 21:35

Maybe she thinks he should be stood on a street corner swigging cider Hmm
