My 12 year old still loves Lego especially Star Wars and Ninjago etc. He had a large Star Wars ship for Xmas & still plays with it, reads Lego books etc.

My mother things he’s too old for it (although she hasn’t specified what she thinks he should be doing at 12)

I always thought Lego was for any age to be honest and would rather he played with Lego than spend hours on a screen....

Aibu? What should 12 year olds be doing?!

Just to add, some of son's bricks were mine. There is a family passion for Star Wars Lego - original universe.
And the last sentence in my previous reply should have read that Lego hire people with no formal qualifications but an ability to turn "stuff" into Lego models.

XJerseyGirlX · 22/01/2020 16:16

im 36 and when the kids get the lego out im so excited and always play with them. Love building houses and get annoyed when dd wants to help lol

HGLFree · 22/01/2020 16:20

Not too young at all. It's imaginative and enhances fine motor skills 🙂

CynthieRose · 22/01/2020 16:20

My 16 year old still plays with her Sylvanian families and Knex.

She wouldn't want her friends to know - all the toys get hidden away whenever friends come round.

It doesn't bother me - I think it's far better than screen time and make up, which is all my 14 year old is interested in!

Samcro · 22/01/2020 16:22

my son is in his late 20's and would have loved some lego for christmas.....couldn't as his cat eats it.

autumnboys · 22/01/2020 16:22

My 16yo asked for and got Lego for Christmas. My mum’s been a bit funny about buying him Lego since he got into his teens, but softened to it again when I suggested it was better than screens!

IggyAce · 22/01/2020 16:23

Never too old for Lego. My DD13 got the Friends Lego for Christmas my DH got the Lego technic Porsche and I enjoyed helping my ds 9 to build the Destiny’s Bounty.

TimeTravellersHat · 22/01/2020 16:24

Show your mum a video of the men and women who build lego as their full time job and how they have to use math skills etc to get their builds right.

There is no age limit in lego!

Geekster1963 · 22/01/2020 16:25

Never too old for Lego. I got a Lego airport for Christmas when I was 14, it was what I wanted, I did tell my friends that I got a telly though if they asked.

whodoyoufollow · 22/01/2020 16:29

Your never too old for lego my son is 11 and he no longer plays with toys it's Xbox or his mobile. I'd love nothing more than for him to still play with toys.

whoseafraidofnaomiwolf · 22/01/2020 16:30

Just to add to what everyone else ha said. My 19 & 22 DS's both requested (and received) Lego sets for Christmas. Your Mum is wrong, wrong, wrong. Smile

SnakeRattleRoll · 22/01/2020 16:33

38 and I still play with Lego!

SunshineCake · 22/01/2020 16:46

You are never too old for Lego!

I won't ask why you are listening to shit from your mother but I will ask why she thinks she has the right to critique your parenting and your son.

I've a new pack in my drawer which I was going to offer but I think too basic for such an aficionado.

SunshineCake · 22/01/2020 16:48

If he's playing with Lego to the exclusion of doing other things that DC of his age are more typically doing, I'd perhaps worry a little bit.

^. Also bollocks.

CLS81 · 22/01/2020 16:53

My 12 year old DS is also still a huge fan of Lego and no sign of that stopping anytime soon. In a lot of secondary schools they have extra curricular Lego clubs and consider it to be part of STEM learning too.

nauticant · 22/01/2020 16:53

The NASA Apollo Saturn V LEGO set is soon going to be discontinued so if anyone wants to get that one, now's the time:

As mentioned by people above, I do have my eye on this:

LaPoesieEstDansLaRue · 22/01/2020 16:54

My DD is 12 and got 2 sets of Lego for Xmas. Your MIL is being ridiculous and it's none of her business anyway.

oohnicevase · 22/01/2020 16:55

My dh has just bought a Porsche lego kit .. he is 45! 🤷‍♀️

SunshineCake · 22/01/2020 16:58

No issue at all playing with lego. But if she is trying to say more generally that he is very young for his age and this was simply one of the examples, then that is different.

No, it isn't different Hmm. Nothing wrong with some twat thinking another person is young for their age (unless a parent says it about their child and even then...) as one can ignore them and everyone matures differently.

MitziK · 22/01/2020 17:00

Back in the Dark Ages (well, the 1980s), we had Lego in our Technology and Science lessons. Lego Technic teaches engineering, maths, physics, electronics and design. It's all compatible with standard Lego. IIRC, the age range was 14 up.

His GM is wrong. Utterly wrong.

Willow2017 · 22/01/2020 17:00

Some adults like Lego. I wouldn’t encourage my son to become one of them. There’s nothing sadder than when you go to someone’s home and they have shitty bits of plastic on display as if they’re ornaments or artwork or something. I’d be phasing out the Lego and encouraging my DC to develop more mature taste.

Oh give over he is 12!
Nothing wrong with Lego for all the reasons quoted above.
It encourages lots of important skills and gives a lot of satisfaction when you complete a difficult set or make something original.

Who made you the boss if what is 'mature' or not? A world without creativity ( in any age) would be very boring indeed.

HerstoryVsHistory · 22/01/2020 17:01

DP is 34 and loves Lego

peanutfoldover · 22/01/2020 17:07

Isn’t David Beckham a huge Lego fan?

Louiselouie0890 · 22/01/2020 17:08

I love lego, my brother in law loved it but couldn't built it so I got to build it all I loved it. What a strange comment

Willow2017 · 22/01/2020 17:08

MitziK
They have the equivalent of Lego in S3 graphics class in ds2's school teaching design and architecture.
