My 12 year old still loves Lego especially Star Wars and Ninjago etc. He had a large Star Wars ship for Xmas & still plays with it, reads Lego books etc.

My mother things he’s too old for it (although she hasn’t specified what she thinks he should be doing at 12)

I always thought Lego was for any age to be honest and would rather he played with Lego than spend hours on a screen....

Aibu? What should 12 year olds be doing?!

My mam is in her 60s and buys Lego cars for herself to build! I do laugh at her but it’s actually fun and I know it is!

Doesn't it say 99 on the box anyway? Tell her to mind her business until he’s 100, then you’ll deal with it

Perhaps she would rather he gamed on line all day like my 10 year old ,would do given half a chance ..I’d love my child to still be playing with Lego

Of course, he isn't too old! I helped out at the fabulous Lego Robot League last year, with entrants up to the age of at least 16 years old. I know adults who still play with Lego. Not all men either.

My ds is almost 12 and loves Lego, still gets it every birthday and Christmas. He mainly gets technic now but did get Minecraft Lego for Christmas for a change.

I'd much rather Lego than sitting on screens all day.

My ds2's school (high school) recently had a NASA physicist visit, complete with large Lego type model of Apollo 11.
If it's ok.for NASA it's good enough for your ds.
My ds2 loves Lego he has many amazing sets on shelves he has played to death with.

Quite apart from the brick sets, which are awesome and my teenagers still ask for every Christmas, have you seen the Lego robotics sets? They use them in world wide competitions (Lego First Robotics League) and require very difficult programming if you want to really challenge yourself. The competitions run for Primary, Secondary and University aged kids

Why on earth would anyone vote it's unreasonable to play with Lego aged 12????

DH is 57 and DD is 22. Both love receiving and building with Lego. Its timeless and ageless.

My mother things he’s too old for it

"Tell you what, mum. This may seem a bit radical, but how about you make your own decisions about what creative play you enjoy, & leave DS to do the same?"

If a 12 year old likes using Lego then he's clearly not too old for it.

You could show him this.

Where's the harm? He's having fun and it doesn't involve a screen!

You're never too old for Lego. I had a great time helping my daughter build the Lego set she hot from Santa and I'm in my 30s.

My 11 year old loves his lego.

Your mother has no right to say that.
What does she think he should be doing? Hanging out in the streets causing havoc?

I deliberately bought my 14 year old a 16+ set for Christmas to encourage him off the PlayStation!

Never too old for Lego

Definitely ignore her. Lego is for any age that enjoys it, and as for the "subject material", many middle-aged adults are still happily obsessed with Star Wars and the like. It may not be "cool" in the eyes of some, but who cares? He'll find his group of like-minded people, just as others of all ages do.

Even if it were a hobby for the young, where's the problem with staying young a bit longer? Your mother is worrying over nothing.

Ignore your mother. Lego has a massive adult market your 12 year old is young in the world of Lego. Get her to watch them at Lego tv program where people are competing to build the best ( a Lego version of bake-off) sorry can’t remember the name.
My 12 plays Lego also btw

I got Lego for both my birthday and Christmas and love it.
I'm a 32 year old parent with a full time job. My DP is constantly eyeing up the star wars melenium falcon.

Plenty of the more complex Lego sets are aged over 16.

A few years ago DD went shopping with her Aunt and Uncle with Birthday money and picked up some Lego. She was about 14 at the time. My dick head of a BIL berated her in the middle of the shop about how she was too old for toys etc and it was ridiculous.
DD called me from the store, most upset. I told her to ask dick head BIL how he was getting on with the toy helicopter he had for Christmas. She's never actually bothered with either of them since then other than pleasantries at family occasions.

So no OP, you are NEVER too old for Lego and don't let anyone tell your DS otherwise.

I’ve had a Lego Death Star on my wish list for the last 5 years. I’m well over 12!
