My 12 year old still loves Lego especially Star Wars and Ninjago etc. He had a large Star Wars ship for Xmas & still plays with it, reads Lego books etc.

My mother things he’s too old for it (although she hasn’t specified what she thinks he should be doing at 12)

I always thought Lego was for any age to be honest and would rather he played with Lego than spend hours on a screen....

Aibu? What should 12 year olds be doing?!

My SIL and I are always trying to "help the kids" by putting together lego stuff. It's totally an excuse to play with the lego of course. Besides, most men I've dated have confessed to still play lego in their pj's till 15 yo or so.

As some Lego sets are aimed at people aged 16 and over then your mother is definitely being unreasonable. My DD is also 12 and still likes Lego and got some more for Christmas just gone.

I’ve never seen the point in hurrying children into growing out of their toys or books. They’re not children for long let them enjoy it. Anyway I thought Lego was for everyone?

DD is 29 and I'm 50 and we both love Lego! We often buy it for each other at Birthdays or Christmas. As you can see from pp's, there's a lot of us around! Ignore your mum Grin

Just make sure she doesn't get rid of it when you're not around!

No issue at all playing with lego. But if she is trying to say more generally that he is very young for his age and this was simply one of the examples, then that is different.

No. not too old if he likes it nothing wrong with it . some of the larger kits have me straggling with them and designed for adults .

There are whole ranges of Lego aimed at the older market. 12 is a great age for Lego.
Some friends used to laugh when DH and I spent our evenings making Lego... Then they saw our Space Shuttle and architecture etc and get it now.

i'm a 38yo woman and I love lego.. I spend most of my disposable income on it.

There is no such this as 'too old' for lego.. there are sets out there aged 16+ so 12 certainly isn't too young!

My ds was still asking for Lego sets at 12, he is now nearly 19 and wants to sell them on but plans on building them to photo first, i think he probably is using that as an excuse to play with it all again!

Anyway who does she think designs the kits?

Cripes, she clearly has zero idea of what Lego is all about these days. There's so many brilliant, creative and challenging aspects to it... my son's 10, completely obsessed with it (especially Star Wars sets) and I fully expect his love of it is going to last into adulthood. I'm always quite amazed at how he puts really complex builds together so quickly or creates big scenes from scratch that he then spends hours adding to them..honestly, don't feel you have to curtail your son's love of it in any way. He's got many Lego years ahead of him.

My DS is 14. Got a lego set as main Xmas present. AGAIN (last 11 years). No, no way too old. Most kids play computer games. I’d much rather lego. The more complex ones are designed for older kids or adults. Lego did a series of ads showing how children used lego to design amazing stuff - I remember one, a child designed a prosthetic leg with moving parts and everything - it fitted him from what I can remember. How great is that!

For Christmas I got Trafalgar Square from the Architecture range and the Friends cafe from Ideas. I’ve already got the Saturn V so the new ISS is in my sights.

DH has got his eye on the new Old Trafford set.

Who does your mum think Technic, Creator Expert and Architecture are for?

Did you ask her why she thinks that. I would expect a 3 page essay on her thoughts and reasons. What does she think is a suitable activity for a 12yo?

Your DM is probably thinking of the lego sets we had when we were kids (I'm mid 50s) which were fairly basic blocks. Today's sets are very intricate and a lot are aimed at older kids/adults. Maybe show her the level of complexity involved today and she may understand better why your son still enjoys it. I'd be thrilled to have a kid who got enjoyment out of lego rather than be glued to a cell phone/x-box/playstation.
