My mother had a real thing about spelling. She passed this onto my siblings and me (we're all also avid readers which has probably helped/exacerbated it!). I have seen some howlers and I have to try not to point them out but it drives me bandy. If you know you're shit at spelling, use Google/spell check before posting! One that really goads me is 'ect'. It's etc - an abbreviation of et cetera. Oh and would/should/could/must of! How can you 'of'? It's 'have' FFS! Why would you abbreviate of to 've? It really grinds my gears 🙈😂

windycuntryside · 23/01/2020 18:01

To add. Keep the memento (momentum) going !!
Not misheard they have used it several times now.
You’s is used a lot round this way. I would only ever say it, it’s regional and I couldn’t write it, it would look wrong to me.

roberta411 · 23/01/2020 18:04

People who write women and there referring to the singular, also I had a friend who's mother was passionately sighted

cardibach · 23/01/2020 18:09

Harls for the same reason you abbreviate cannot to can’t? It’s how we speak in real life. Should’ve (for example) is completely accurate. It’s not at all responsible for anyone writing or saying should of.

SmileyClare · 23/01/2020 18:12

what the heck is skellington? I'd make a wild guess at Skeleton.

Sorry to bring up this word but I hate it when people pronounce Brexit as
Breggzit most of the news readers do it. It's supposed to rhyme with Exit isn't it?

Alleycat1 · 23/01/2020 18:16

Seen on FB today.Anyone know someone who can repair a Citron cheep?

roberta411 · 23/01/2020 18:18

Folk who mix up their and there,it actually makes me shudder when I see that mistake 😫

winniestone37 · 23/01/2020 18:23

You’re aware that lots of our current words/place names were formed in exactly this way right!?

Rtruth · 23/01/2020 18:26

Bloody hilarious

TrixieMixie · 23/01/2020 18:30

When I was a little girl I thought there was a football team called Hulkingston Rovers.

Marleyj8 · 23/01/2020 18:31

Rort iron gate
Prolly instead of probably
Can't be asked (I always thought it was arsed but I'm probably wrong!?)

In all honesty the speed a speak chest of drawers sounds like Chester draws. Someone called me out on it once, to which I slowed it down and proved their hearing was equally at fault to my speech.

Equally, let’s not forget that language is an ever evolving

Marleyj8 · 23/01/2020 18:35

Other words/phrases which irritate me senseless:

Ikkle / lil = little
Girlie
Making memories
This one
Chippy tea
Picky tea
Cutie /cutie pie
Holibobs
Nuptials

VK456 · 23/01/2020 18:38

Gorilla warfare. 🤔

Marleyj8 · 23/01/2020 18:39

When people use the word 'cheeky' as in 'cheeky drink' grrr.
Sorry I'm digressing now

SamSoSer · 23/01/2020 18:39

“loose” when lose is meant is rampant.
Levridge.... I think she meant leverage, crushed Asians (Crustaceans?)
It’s a daily source of amusement

BunsyGirl · 23/01/2020 18:41

It’s “there” and “their” that winds me up. A member of my family is in the senior leadership team of a secondary school but he can’t use “there” and “there” properly. There’s no hope for his students!

Flipflopalops · 23/01/2020 18:48

I was always taught to pronounce H as aitch ......I'm not sure if this is the right way , but my mum had a real thing about it & so now when i hear people saying Haitch with definition on the huh it really grates and seems to be happenong more & more
Anyone know how it should be pronounced?

ShowOfHands · 23/01/2020 18:52

Aitch is correct but there are occasional regional variations.

CanICelebrate · 23/01/2020 19:01

The ‘need Chester draws no silly prices and must deliver’ is a classic

CanICelebrate · 23/01/2020 19:02

Slight paraphrase above sorry!

ChipsCheeseAndBeans · 23/01/2020 19:03

People who write on route instead of en route
