To be concerned about the new coronavirus?

I’m increasingly alarmed by the developments on this. Today we learn that 1 hospitalised patient infected a number of healthcare workers and the first case has been confirmed in the US (a patient who had been to Wuhan).

There are 3 direct flights per week from Wuhan to London, it only seems like a matter of time Shock
Shouldn’t these flights be temporarily suspended?

How would you know if you have it and not just a normal cold or virus.

I'm quite an anxious person anyway but dd has come home today quite poorly. Sore throat, cough, sore arms/legs, extremely tired, shivers and really pale, also saying shes freezing but her skin is warm to touch . She was crying saying her back was sore too. Shes been sleeping on and off since 1pm. Shes rarely ill, never had these symptoms before.

😔 my mind is in overdrive.

@HavenDilemma my post was from several days before the UK cases. And even with two cases out of 60 million no point worrying. Asian cities are far denser and hygiene standards in China are lower. It won’t spread as quickly. Also note the vast majority of cases and deaths remain in Wuhan area.

@cryingoverspilttea I had the same illness over Christmas I've never known anything like it I was struggling with breathing ad the most awful nasal drip and glass in my throat feeling. I think we've probably already had it here but not known what it was.

“ On Wednesday the condition of the two earliest cases in Paris - a couple in their 30s who had travelled from China - had worsened and the man is now in intensive care, according to French authorities.”

The first US patient, a man in his 30s, is also in intensive care.

This isn’t concerning, it’s frightening.

Wait sorry, let me find the link to that. The article below said that on 30th Jan he was improving even though he’d developed pneumonia.
I’m not sure whether the report about him being in intensive care was before or after that.

Ok, here it is. He was given an experimental anti viral drug and subsequently appears to have improved.

Speculating here but if the virus has only recently transferred from animals to humans it will probably only be able to infect a small amount of human hosts (because it has low ability to infect humans) but it will be more virulent and dangerous because it hasn't had time to adapt to humans
most viruses get less virulent over time because as they adapt to their host it's in their interest not to kill the host

Gosh how quick it took hold

Ilikefresias · 10/04/2020 21:27

You were definitely right to be concerned MissPoldark!
