I’m increasingly alarmed by the developments on this. Today we learn that 1 hospitalised patient infected a number of healthcare workers and the first case has been confirmed in the US (a patient who had been to Wuhan).

There are 3 direct flights per week from Wuhan to London, it only seems like a matter of time Shock
Shouldn’t these flights be temporarily suspended?

I wonder about the decision to fly them in so far from the Wirral too. Reportedly they face a 170 mile coach trip. That seems a little nuts. There must be a reason...

yolofish · 31/01/2020 10:42

Two confirmed cases in the UK now according to BBC. They won't say where they are being treated.

DD2 is very anxious, she commutes to London using the train and tube, and DH is immuno suppressed as on chemo. We are going to watch and wait over the w/e and she may decide to work from home next week.

PlomBear · 31/01/2020 10:45

I’m not sure there are any facilities close to Brize Norton for quarantine purposes. So many military bases have been closed down to turn into housing. I know of bases with empty buildings but they have been allowed to grown into dilapidated states.

If it’s an RAF aircraft, perhaps it can’t land at a commercial airport?

BlastEndedSkrewt · 31/01/2020 10:46

i'm worried - as someone who is asthmatic I have obvious concerns however I have faith that someone will bring out a vaccine soon enough

myrtleWilson · 31/01/2020 10:47

@yolofish press association reports saying UK cases being treated at RVI in Newcastle

PlomBear · 31/01/2020 10:47

You would think from reading Mumsnet that people are running around screaming in a state of mass hysteria! In real life that isn’t happening. Calm down.

PhilSwagielka · 31/01/2020 10:48

I'm actually hoping I get it, tbh.

Queenunikitty · 31/01/2020 10:48

It’s here in the UK, cases have been confirmed.

PlomBear · 31/01/2020 10:49

Before the internet, nobody would be working themselves up into a state of hysteria.

MoonlightMistletoe · 31/01/2020 10:52

Have any of you watched pandemic on Netflix? Perhaps this is the next one ?

LittleRen · 31/01/2020 10:53

They can’t fly them into a commercial airport for obvious reasons - they can’t shut down a public airport. It’s not an RAF aircraft it’s a leased aircraft from a Spanish airline.
It’s a 747 so I imagine lot every RAF airbase has the ability to safely land a 747.

LittleRen · 31/01/2020 10:53

Not instead of lot

UYScuti · 31/01/2020 10:54

SARS and mers were much worse surely?

PlomBear · 31/01/2020 10:59

Well if you read “my child has a badge that see ghosts” thread, you would know that Birdie Friend predicted that The End is coming!

MoonlightMistletoe · 31/01/2020 11:06

@PlomBear that gave me shivers Grin

yolofish · 31/01/2020 11:31

The two in Newcastle are not off the plane though, are they?

yolofish · 31/01/2020 11:51

Been trying to find advice for immunocompromised people... basically it just seems to be the usual wash your hands, stand back from hawkers and spitters, etc. DD2 is getting really anxious that she will bring it home to DH.

yolofish · 31/01/2020 15:58

A friend has just posted on FB to say there's a case at Washington State University - where her son is.

HavenDilemma · 31/01/2020 17:01

@missyoumuch YABU. I live in Asia and I’m slightly worried but in the UK it’s ridiculous to worry about it.

Are you joking? Two people in the city just 15 miles from me has just been confirmed as having it

HavenDilemma · 31/01/2020 17:03

@PhilSwagielka I'm actually hoping I get it, tbh.

Hmm
iswhois · 31/01/2020 17:16

I said this in another thread as well, I'm not worried but I am very angry that China has now caused TWO global pandemics from their live animal markets, which are hideously cruel in any case.

In my opinion it's time for the UN to sanction the Chinese govt for allowing a trade which keeps causing issues with global heath.

draughtycatflap · 31/01/2020 17:48

Why worry about a few people in quarantine? Surely in about three to four weeks the majority of infected people will be outside in the general UK population. It is inevitable.

PickwickThePlockingDodo · 31/01/2020 18:06

Completely agree.

PhilSwagielka · 31/01/2020 18:58

@HavenDilemma I've got nothing to lose and my body is a pile of shite anyway. Rather me than some child, you know?

HeresMe · 31/01/2020 20:08
