To be concerned about the new coronavirus?

I’m increasingly alarmed by the developments on this. Today we learn that 1 hospitalised patient infected a number of healthcare workers and the first case has been confirmed in the US (a patient who had been to Wuhan).

There are 3 direct flights per week from Wuhan to London, it only seems like a matter of time Shock
Shouldn’t these flights be temporarily suspended?

I live in China and the actions taken to date by the govt would indicate they don’t see the virus as less serious than the flu.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 29/01/2020 13:02

How are things where you are Shanghai? I've been thinking about you.

ShanghaiDiva · 29/01/2020 13:11

@OhYouBadBadKitten
Thanks for thinking of me!
Everything is pretty calm in my city, schools closed, public holiday extended and it is now compulsory to wear a mask in public places.
We left China yesterday (via HK) as had already booked a holiday and will see what happens over the next 2 weeks and how easy it will be to get back in...

OhYouBadBadKitten · 29/01/2020 13:14

That's good to hear :)
I guess it's impossible to know what the flight situation will be at that point. Crossing bridges and all that....

LisBethSalander07 · 29/01/2020 13:25

I think it's quite worrying, a young pregnant mum died from swine flu in our village and left her newborn baby motherless. She was 24 and newly married Sad

I think a complete travel ban needs to be in place until a vaccine is developed.

LoveIsLovely · 29/01/2020 13:28

Lisbeth, a full travel ban?

How the hell would you begin to police that? Or justify it, honestly?

ajandjjmum · 29/01/2020 13:50

DD's company have an office in China and people flying in and out all of the time. They have brought in very strict measures - Chinese office closed and keeping in touch with their Chinese employees daily to see if they need help. British employees being brought back and told to stay at home for two weeks. Obviously all trips to China cancelled.

Hopefully with everyone treating this much more urgently than they did SARS, will reduce the impact.

Hope you and yours remain safe ShanghaiDiva.

Hmm
Eveting2019 · 29/01/2020 14:25

@Kokeshi123

If you have the time or inclination please could you explain what this means?

Pandemic flu (as opposed to the regular winter kind) is caused by viral shift as opposed to viral drift, so the kind of flu vaccines we get every winter are not going to help much.

I’d like to understand but sadly don’t!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 29/01/2020 18:29

DHS company is also banning all travel to China at present.

Some good news...
The first 2 coronavirus patients in Australia have been discharged

I’m not ignoring cases in China, but it’s more difficult to find reliable information about those and there are questions about the reliability of info coming out of China.

OP posts:
ShanghaiDiva · 30/01/2020 09:42

That is encouraging news.

DoomsdayVirus · 30/01/2020 10:20

Been discharged? hope they are not still shedding virus and contagious!

ShanghaiDiva · 30/01/2020 10:33

Read the article!

ajandjjmum · 30/01/2020 13:12

A hospital is hardly likely to release them if they're still contagious Doomsday!

ShanghaiDiva · 30/01/2020 13:24

Australia won’t let you bring a banana into the country. They are hardly going to discharge patients that are still infected with the virus!
FFS

DoomsdayVirus · 30/01/2020 15:19

Well, glad to hear they are more on the ball than our so called professionals, remember the nurse who caught Ebola cos she used the wrong size face mask? The officials who told us that Ebola is not very contagious and does not spread easily.Hmm

DoomsdayVirus · 30/01/2020 15:25

and apparently the quarantine facility is in North West England, guess where I live? yup Shock

MissPoldark · 30/01/2020 16:46

Oh yeah, you could have bet they’d send them up north.
Why fly them into Brize Norton & then take them to north west England?
Will they be going via coach?
What if they need to stop at services?

ajandjjmum · 31/01/2020 09:51

DH has been getting very worked up about that MissPoldark - can't understand why they couldn't have flown them in to an airport closer to Liverpool - there are RAF stations much closer!

Vilanelle · 31/01/2020 09:54

I am getting a little anxious about this now, purely because I am pregnant. Otherwise I don't think I would be AS concerned.

The media coverage is very frightening.

Alsoco · 31/01/2020 09:54

I’ve got the novichok police cars buried half a mile from my house forever, I’d happily swap for the coronavirus people!

HairyFloppins · 31/01/2020 09:57

I'm quite petrified. I suffer from health anxiety and I have been trying to avoid the news as much as possible.

It's on my mind all the time at the moment. Really worried for my elderly parents.

PlomBear · 31/01/2020 10:29

I’m not worried.

The Conservative government closed down all the military hospitals to be sold off for housing. Haslar Hospital would have been perfect to use for isolation patients.
