To ask how much you pay every month to run a car

Sugarcainx · 21/01/2020 19:29

Excluding finance costs, how much do you pay per month for petrol, insurance and anything else ? Just wondering what people's monthly average is. I spend £80 per month on public transport with the odd taxi on top, I would love to have a car but feel like i'd be spending double per month.

Invisimamma · 21/01/2020 19:32

Per month i put £50 in fuel and save £50 towards service and mot costs, that usually covers it, unless we're going on a particularly long journey. I only do small local journeys most weeks, around 350miles per month.

I own my car outright so no finance costs. Its a 2014 so not brand new, small family sized hatch back.

Beagled · 21/01/2020 19:35

I spend £80, I have a short commute however the family car we use to go walking, out with the dog etc. OH probably £100-120, he has a longer commute but uses his less out of work

Junie70 · 21/01/2020 19:35

My lease is £200, fuel around £120 a month. Insurance is around £30 per month. Car has had one service in 2 years but that was £600 including 2 new front tyres.

Monetmoney · 21/01/2020 19:37

My insurance I pay annually (£200 ish), I live relatively near our city centre so only spend about £40 a month on fuel. Depends how much you'd drive, what car you'd pick etc.

Try a price comparison site to see how much your insurance payments on the type of car you're interested in would be?

TipseyTorvey · 21/01/2020 19:37

Old banger. Paid off. So £50 on fuel and save £30 per month for service, mot etc at the end of the year. I'm aware I'll need a new one in 5 year or so but haven't started saving for that yet. Hoping I can keep it going for ever 😂

mamapants · 21/01/2020 19:38

About £75 for diesel, tax and insurance.

brummiesue · 21/01/2020 19:43

£90 a month insurance, £50 ish tax and approx £200 a month in diesel, not including mot/service/breakdowns. I have a 4 litre range rover and do a good few miles a month so I'm probably not the best example, depends what size car you are considering.

SoloMummy · 21/01/2020 19:43

Per month:
£25 insurance.
£18 tax
Petrol £80 budgeted but depends on work commitments
Car parking £5

Annually:
£58 mot
Service £150 x 2
Repairs (if any) £400 budgetted
Tolls £20

Obviously depends on age and make of the car. What type of driving you do, where etc. Eg cars by the sea tend to not last as long as other areas.

MrsKoala · 21/01/2020 19:43

Monthly - Car ins £38. Dvla £25. fuel £80 (only drive at weekends).
Annually - serviced once a year approx £300 in costs. Mot approx £300. Tyres Approx £130. So divided by 12 about £60 per month.

So about £200 per month.

Car is 11 years old and cost £7k 3 years ago.

SoloMummy · 21/01/2020 19:44

Plus breakdown cover at £9a month.

TorysSuckRevokeArticle50 · 21/01/2020 19:46

Don't forget to add parking charges on. My car itself is cheap, £30 tax for the year, £40 a month petrol, £25 a month fully complies insurance with all my no claims.

But parking for work is £3 a day, I do approx 3 days in the office a week so £9 a week. Then I put aside £50 a month for repairs, service, MoT.

It is cheaper financially to bus it, but using the car saves me a lot of time and means I can get big shops in without paying delivery charges or having to do several small shops I can carry on the bus.

MiniMum97 · 21/01/2020 19:58

We probably spend about £60 to £100 pcm fuel and I put £100 aside each month for servicing, MOT, repairs, insurance.

FourTeaFallOut · 21/01/2020 20:00

Not very much, I have a Nissan Leaf so no tax, insurance is £21/ month, charging costs £15 month ish ( 7.5k miles/year but rarely need to charge it away from home) it's been pretty low maintenance, I've needed one tyre and a set of wipers in the last three years.

PettyContractor · 21/01/2020 20:00

I think anyone who does a reasonable mileage (I used to do 14,000 a year) would struggle to spend less than £200 a month total on depreciation and maintenance, on average over an extended period.

I have data for 1995 to present. 1995 to 2014 I commuted 14000 miles a year, in an old/cheap car, paying London congestion charge from when it was introduced. Then I bought a new car that I still have, and my mileage dropped to under 3000, as I switched to working from home. During the whole history £300 a month was about the minimum average spend in any year, in my most expensive year I spent £500 a month.

Sugarcainx · 21/01/2020 20:00

Thank you for the replies, it's interesting to see how much others pay. Atm I don't think I can afford it as i'm going to be paying for braces, I will have to consider if it's worth it financially after that.

Ive got a lift share to work a few times a week which i'm very grateful for, saves me about 30 minutes.

35 insurance 50 fuel 25 tax

Old banger bought outright.

Get servicing/ repairs done at cost price, family in the trade

LaurieFairyCake · 21/01/2020 20:21

£50 insurance
£60 petrol
£12 breakdown
£30 Mot/repairs

So - £142

(Car itself free)

Coughsyrupsucks · 21/01/2020 20:23

I do about 14,000 miles a year. 2011 BMW 1 Series.

Insurance is £37
Petrol is £70
Car Tax is £2.50
Servicing is £20
MOT is £4.57

£134.07 Total

PigletJohn · 21/01/2020 20:33

£3393.77 for two, last twelve months.

Excludes purchase/depreciation.

PigletJohn · 21/01/2020 20:35

which is £282.81 pcm

safariboot · 21/01/2020 20:37

£140 a month for about 250 miles a month. Not including parking costs or unexpected repair costs.

That breaks down as:

£67 insurance - I live in one of the highest-risk postcodes in the country
£45 fuel
£18 tax
£10 guess for misc costs including MOT, car wash, wiper fluid

slinkysaluki · 21/01/2020 20:40

£30 a week petrol, £230 a year insurance, £15 a month tax

Sugarcainx · 21/01/2020 20:43

Thank you. That's another thing, I don't have many savings and would struggle with large unexpected repair costs. I think it will a more viable option when i'm in a better place financially, and i'll have to make do with public transport for now.
