To ask how much you pay every month to run a car

Excluding finance costs, how much do you pay per month for petrol, insurance and anything else ? Just wondering what people's monthly average is. I spend £80 per month on public transport with the odd taxi on top, I would love to have a car but feel like i'd be spending double per month.

OP posts:
ivykaty44 · 22/01/2020 06:55

I own the car outright

It’s £250 to insure
I drive 2500 miles per year average so fill up with petrol 6/7 times a year which cost £40 for a full tank
£20 per month on fuel
£20 on insurance
£12.50 month for service and MOT at £100 service and £50 MOT

So £52 per month for transport

orangejuicer · 22/01/2020 07:04

Works out at about £50pm insurance and £45pw for petrol- but I have a long commute.

stripeypillowcase · 22/01/2020 07:07

we got rid of our car.
costs were high - 2000 tax a year, 600 insurance, 300 parking, 150 at least month fuel, 500 a year for mot/maintenance (not even repairs)
so at least 400 a month.

our employers pay our rail card or part of the rail card.

Ponoka7 · 22/01/2020 07:16

OP, look up the type of car you'd want on Auto trader and then do an insurance quote for yourself.

If you would be a newly qualified driver, you'd be spending a lot more on insurance than posters on here. I'm in Liverpool and the insurance costs are horrendous.

It's difficult to build up a NCB if you live in a high crime/uninsured drivers etc area. So can't count on that to bring your costs down.

BammBamm · 22/01/2020 07:21

Monthly:
£75 fuel
£10 parking (roughly)

Annual:
£550 insurance
£30 tax
£45 MOT
£300 service
£265 tyres (on average 2 per year)
£15 things like screen wash/de-icer/leather cleaner

So, around £108 per month without depreciation, finance cost or unexpected repairs. Mine is a 5 year old diesel. I don't do many miles anymore as I have a job relatively close to home. I used to have a much bigger commute.

LakieLady · 22/01/2020 07:25

Insurance and tax work out at about £30 pcm, petrol about another £80.

In the 5 years (I think it's 5, not altogether sure) we've had one pair of new tyres and now need another pair, so £8 a month tyres. We spend around £200 a year on servicing/MOT, and average about £100 a year on repairs, so another £25 a month.

I make that £143 a month, all in.

We buy old petrol Audis (B5 series) as they seem very reliable. My previous car (diesel Mondeo) cost me more in a year than the Audi has in 5 years.

Leafyhouse · 22/01/2020 08:03

£100 per month insurance. £2k per year servicing (tyres cost £800, all 4 have to be changed at once, brakes aren't cheap either). Car only does 19mpg, so about £200 per month fuel. £30 per month road tax, £40 per month breakdown cover.

Welcome to the wonderful world of Porsche ownership!

ivykaty44 · 22/01/2020 08:04

So after reading this £80 per month is cheaper for bus than purchasing and running a private car, as very few under £80 and that’s not taking into account purchase or lease

cologne4711 · 22/01/2020 08:08

We have two cars

Insurance on one is around £44 a month, plus tax of £155 (ish) a year and petrol around £35 a month depending on where we go in it, we use it for the longer journeys.

Other car is £200 insurance for the year (paid in one go), no VED as it's an older hybrid and petrol around £25-30 a month doing a lot more mileage than the other car.

cologne4711 · 22/01/2020 08:09

I forgot MOT and servicing - probably another £500 a year for both cars depending on what sort of service and whether eg they need new tyres. The older car needs its air con looking at too so that will be another £70 ish at a place down the road.

Kazzyhoward · 22/01/2020 08:17

£12 per month road tax
£13 per month insurance
Approx £20 per month fuel.

12 year old Citroen C3! Very economical on fuel.

Kazzyhoward · 22/01/2020 08:20

£265 tyres (on average 2 per year)

What are you doing to them to need 2 new tyres per year when doing relatively low mileage?

I've only had one full set of tyres in 12 years!

wonkylegs · 22/01/2020 08:20

My figures aren't going to help as I drive a PHEV so fuel costs are negligible, insurance, breakdown and servicing costs are part of my lease.
Insurance costs vary so wildly due to driving history age, car and location.
Fuel costs depend on distances and cars and again can vary wildly
Servicing, spares & breakdown cover - age and make of car
I used to run an old very reliable Toyota Yaris that was exceedingly cheap to run - cheap insurance due to my age, profession, location and car, and good history (approx. £200 per year)
Good mileage as it had a small engine & light car
Very reliable so servicing, maintenance and breakdown costs were low
Car I bought new for £8k sold 14yrs later for £1k so more than money's worth
DHs larger family car was way way more expensive to run and his insurance was much much more partially due to his job
You'd be better picking some example cars and estimating the costs based on your situation.

BlueChangeling · 22/01/2020 08:26

Insurance: £36
Loan: £100
Petrol & Cleaning: £60

I drive often so I don't always have to put £60, in the months I don't the extra money goes on the MOT and Tax fund and I pay that off once a year.

whatdoyouthinkyouknow · 22/01/2020 08:38

£11.15 a month full insurance
£20 a month for a year of full service and MOT
£30 fuel

No tax as it's tax free
Wear and tear are in the tyres and that about every 4 years so so.

Day to day running costs are around £65 a month so about £2.30 a day,

QueenofmyPrinces · 22/01/2020 09:13

Petrol = £40
Tax = free
Insurance = £34

So £74 a month.

Over the last 5 years I have also been paying £145 a month pay off the loan I had to pay for my car.

I paid it off 2 months ago though so now I just have the £74 costs a month now.

tinysnickersaremyfavourite · 22/01/2020 09:32

Insurance is £250 a year. (full no claims)
No finance.
Petrol about £180 per month.
Occasional parking meter fees.

Car has luckily only broken down once in 6 years with a minor fault, but it has just taken 4 new tyres and new brake pads to get it MoT worthy so that was almost £500.

tinysnickersaremyfavourite · 22/01/2020 09:33

Oops forgot tax, it's £190 a year I think

LeSquigh · 22/01/2020 10:01

For those asking about my Fiesta I checked the MPG display this morning and it’s 33mpg!! Hideous. It’s petrol, 1.4, automatic (which I think uses more fuel) and I do a lot of town miles, I use the motorway where I can but it’s at a standstill on the section I would use when I need to use it so through towns is a quicker option. The car is seven years old which also doesn’t help but I’m not sure any of this accounts for such poor economy!

Purpletigers · 22/01/2020 10:20

Tax is £220 annually, insurance approximately £450? annually. I just fill the tank up when it’s nearly empty ( costs £65 ) and usually fill it for every 2 weeks .
Never actually sat down and worked out how much I spend monthly .
Car was paid for with cash 8 years ago and is now 11 years old . Runs like a dream .

Andersonx3 · 22/01/2020 10:39

This is all very dependant on circumstances. Even your job can alter your insurance premium.

I'm 24, project coordinator living in a small village in the midlands. I have 1 child. My insurance premium is £570 a year. My car is old, has a big engine, and is modified. If I drove a small hatchback with no modifications it would probably be about £200 a year.

I'd perhaps get an insurance quote on the type of car you would have, just to see. Fuel can be relatively easy to work out if you know how many miles you'd be travelling. Tax can be found online.

SuperMeerkat · 22/01/2020 10:57

Around £200 in fuel 🤦‍♀️ That’s roughly 3 tanks, two of which are used for DH to pick up his kids and return them home. The other tank is just general driving, work, pootling etc. No tax as I have disabled tax, owner outright, about £33pcm for insurance and, if worked out monthly, about £50 a month for MOT, repairs, tyres etc.

MiniTheMinx · 22/01/2020 11:06

Car is paid for outright. It's a Saab convertible. Seems reliable so far.
Petrol approx £50
Car tax £32 (or thereabouts)
insurance £36
I don't save separately or specifically for servicing, repairs or MOT.
I could cope without a car, but I choose to have one and enjoy driving.

Our train fares each month amount to over £400 and if I gave up work just to drive all four of the others around each day to where they need to be, i still don't think I'd spend anywhere near £400 a month.

Verily1 · 25/01/2020 08:33

No ones mentioning parking- for me that’s another £20-£50pa

I also once parked on a pavement not realising it could get lifted- so £180 to get it released from pound Blush

And touch wood I’ve never had a speeding ticket.

VirtualHamster · 25/01/2020 08:50

I'm not sure you can argue that getting your car impounded is a normal cost of owning a car!
