To ask how much you pay every month to run a car

Excluding finance costs, how much do you pay per month for petrol, insurance and anything else ? Just wondering what people's monthly average is. I spend £80 per month on public transport with the odd taxi on top, I would love to have a car but feel like i'd be spending double per month.

Thanks for the replies. It seems I will always be spending less on a bus, but a car would be such a help. At least i've got the carpool for now. Who's voted me as unreasonable 😂

4 year old small popular hatchback 1litre turbo

Taking out the last few months go, it will soon cost me

£30 pa tax
£30 per month insurance in. Business
£20 fuel, most fuel costs get reimbursed about £90 in total
£20 service and not
£25 repairs and wear and tear

musicposy · 21/01/2020 22:34

I’ve had to take my car off road temporarily for medical reasons and am only using public transport. It’s only been just over a month but I cannot believe how much money I’m saving. So much, that though it’s annoying not having the convenience, I’m not sure if I want the car back!

Verily1 · 21/01/2020 22:37

Average insurance is £800 per year, it’ll be more if you are a new driver with no no claims bonus but will go down every year. Add finance to that if you can’t pay it up front.

Tax £120 one a year

Mot £40 plus c £200 per year for repairs (usually just tyres and brake pads)

Breakdown is c £40 per year

Petrol - it depends on mileage!! A small car is c 50mpg petrol is c 120p per litre, 4 litres per gallon- you do the maths!

My car is worth every penny.

The freedom it gives is priceless!

Forcryingoutloudwtf · 21/01/2020 22:39

£60 petrol, £25 - insurance, £15 tax, about £40/£50 maintenance and repairs evened out over a year.

LeSquigh · 21/01/2020 22:45

Blimey - I am really surprised at how little some people spend on fuel for the amount of miles they get in supposed gas guzzlers. I have a Fiesta, do about 12,000 miles a year so 1000 a month and I probably spend £200-250 a month on fuel. AND I get Costco fuel so it’s comparatively cheap!

okiedokieme · 21/01/2020 22:46

I spend about £100 a month on fuel and I save £100 towards the cost of insuring, tax, mot and servicing (paid annually)

neversleepagain · 21/01/2020 22:51

Fuel £100
Insurance £25
Road Tax £18
Servicing plan £22
Tyres etc on average £10

cannotmakemymindup · 21/01/2020 22:57

@LeSquigh I am shocked you're spending so much as I do comparatively similar milage and only spend £140 on fuel. What size engine is your Fiesta and is it mainly town miles?
My Kia Picanto is only a little 1.1 engine nearly 4 years old and I'm saving upto £100 a month than your car and there's not much in the size normally.

GreyAndCopper · 21/01/2020 23:09

I'm so jealous of everyone paying so little insurance. I have to pay £140 a month.

GlitteryUnicornSparkles · 21/01/2020 23:24

My car insurance is £55 per month. I use £25 per week in petrol (so approx. £100 per month?) and my road tax is £10.50 per month so roughly £165.50 per month in total. I can only just pay my bills each month as it is, repair jobs break me. I work in the arse end of nowhere though so I have no choice but to drive.

safariboot · 21/01/2020 23:26

On fuel, besides your car, your driving style and where you drive will affect it. You'll get better miles per gallon on motorways compared to if you're always driving in town. I also saved fuel when I stopped flooring it away from traffic lights.

On insurance, location is a number one factor. As important or even more important than age, experience, or car choice.

JaceLancs · 21/01/2020 23:29

Car bought outright
Insurance about £400 a year
Diesel £100 a month
Repairs mot etc - maybe £200 a year DP fixes n services so just parts

SospanFrangipan · 21/01/2020 23:31

We lease ours, £250 per month that includes tax. So it's just £25 insurance and about £50 in diesel. No MOT or repairs as it's under warranty and only 2 years old.

NaomifromMilshake · 21/01/2020 23:37

I get 19 MPG in the winter.Blush

All short journeys.

I spend a lot on petrol.

Highonpotandused · 21/01/2020 23:46

Car insurance: £300 pa
Road Tax: £120 pa
Petrol: £30pm
MOT: £30pa
New tyre: £60 pa

Total: £72.50 pm

40somethingJBJ · 21/01/2020 23:48

My insurance was £194 this renewal, so around £16 a month.
Tax is £30 a year, so £2.50 a month.
Fuel is approximately £50 a month.
Average service, MOT and repairs is £200 a year, so around £17 a month.
Breakdown cover is included in my bank account.
Total of around £85 a month then. I do have an old, super economical diesel (60+mpg) which I’ve been very, very lucky with repairs-wise so far!

Clymene · 21/01/2020 23:57

Less that £100/month. I fill up every 2 months (£50), annually insurance is just under £300, tax £150, mot and servicing £300. I very rarely pay for parking.

LionelRitchieStoleMyNotebook · 22/01/2020 00:02

I have quite a short commute now so all in around £75 that doesn't include things like tyres, MOT, servicing etc. If I added those in about £100-£120 a month, £25-£30 per week, completely worth it for the flexibility, and not having to lug a baby around in the freezing cold on busses that can only take one pram at a time. I also have to travel to locations not easily accessible by public transport for work, my time is precious my car gives me a lot more of it than busses and trains would

VirtualHamster · 22/01/2020 06:07

Fiesta, do about 12,000 miles a year so 1000 a month and I probably spend £200-250 a month on fuel

That's horrendous fuel mileage for a Fiesta. It costs me 50 quid to fill up and I'll get 400 miles out of a tank (1.6l petrol engine). So 1000 miles costs me around £125

adaline · 22/01/2020 06:09

Road tax is £30 per year, insurance £350 per year fully comp.

I bought my car outright so there's just fuel, MOT and service to pay. Probably if you average it out over the year it's about £100 per month.

SimonJT · 22/01/2020 06:18

Petrol £20 (I live in London so don’t drive very often).
Insurance would be £49 if I paid monthly.
My parking space was bought almost two years ago for £35k.
Servicing etc £20 a month.

tangledyarn · 22/01/2020 06:40

Insurance £30
Tax 15 ish
Fuel 40
Car parking 10 ish
Put 50 a month away for MOT/repairs. Have a cheap old car, dont do loads of miles but use most days.

UnexpectedItemInTheShaggingAre · 22/01/2020 06:42

My insurance is 125 quid a month, for a 1.2 seat Ibiza. I was written off by an uninsured driver and lost my ncd 💔

WelcomeToCranford · 22/01/2020 06:46

£37 for tax and insurance, probably around £20 - £30 for fuel (i I don't drive much). Car is owned outright so no finance. Repairs and maintenance paid for as and when.
