To ask how much you pay every month to run a car

Excluding finance costs, how much do you pay per month for petrol, insurance and anything else ? Just wondering what people's monthly average is. I spend £80 per month on public transport with the odd taxi on top, I would love to have a car but feel like i'd be spending double per month.

Mine is:

£43 insurance
£10 tax
£35 mot/service

£88 total

£40 petrol ish

£128 Inc petrol

I don't really drive enough to justify running a car, it's an expensive luxury. But my parents live in the middle of nowhere so if I want to see them then I run a car!

About £100 per month on fuel (for about 1000 miles driving), commute every day plus general driving and errands.

Insurance I pay annually, so it's about £16 a month, tax is £30 a year.

Own the car outright so no finance costs but for general wear and tear, servicing, MOT and maintenance it's probably around £300-500 a year, so per month £25-40ish.

Fuel around £50 per month, insurance £120 per year, tax I think £40 per year. So works out just over £60 per month.

Approx 300 fuel, 40 ins, 25 tax, then yearly tyres, service, mot & repairs works out at roughly 75pcm?
My car and my house cost me roughly the same Confused

FlorencesHunger · 25/01/2020 19:04

I paid £435 for annual insurance, £30 tax and about £12pm on a service and mot plan. And around £40-60pm on fuel depending on use. So that is between £80-100 if the total is divided monthly. My car is on finance at £137pm so it is more like £250pm Shock. In real terms it is around.

Atm I commute part by car and the rest by bus. So my travel costs in total go back up to around 250.

I had a 2nd hand private sale car and it cost too much for the upkeep. Even if I am paying out a lot atm it is more or less the same as the clapped out car except my car is now only a few years old and extremely reliable, which is worth the trade off.

36 per month insurance
17 per month tax
55 per week petrol so around 250 per month

I budget £335 a month.

£30 insurance, £75 tax/MOT/service/repairs, £130 fuel and £100 towards replacing the car in a few years.

I only have a little Peugeot, it’s only a small engine so cheap to run. I only use it for short journeys like grocery shopping in the week and over short trips at weekends - longer trips only ever so often. So monthly:

£45 insurance
£30 petrol
£11 break down cover

Once a year service - £70
MOT - £45

Car itself is a loan.
I pay £240 a year for insurance on my car. I pay annually rather than monthly.
Car tax is £0 - small electric car
Electricity to charge car from 0 to full is less than £2.50. I only drive short distances in it for work - so that's about £10-12 for the month.
Work parking - free as I have a parking permit.
My first year service is due and that is £85. No MOT yet as I got it new almost a year ago.

Aragog · 25/01/2020 19:37

DH has a big 4x4 and his running costs are much much higher. His will be changed in about 18 months time. We plan to change it for one of the bigger electric cars at that time, which will reduce the running costs somewhat. He also gets free work parking too.

DownstairsMixUp · 25/01/2020 20:05

Insurance is 300 for the year. 18 on tax. Possible 120 on petrol per month? Looking to buy a new car with 20 a year tax and more mpg
